sdevault -> I just can't hold back. (4/2/2010 8:14:19 PM)

I just have to post this. I had looked into SHV and browsed their forum, and I can't believe the debacle going on with that game. I just had to let everyone know how lucky we are to have the team from WITP:AE working for us and our gaming experience. There is no doubt in my mind that Matrix and associates are the pinnacle for gaming enthusiasts. Just the rapid help and explanations alone….

This isn’t a ‘sucking up’ post. It’s a post of total relief !!

Mistmatz -> RE: I just can't hold back. (4/2/2010 8:24:46 PM)

SHV?

Terminus -> RE: I just can't hold back. (4/2/2010 8:27:13 PM)

Probably Silent Hunter V. Another awful pile of <expletive deleted>...

d0mbo -> RE: I just can't hold back. (4/2/2010 9:47:52 PM)

I own all the previous installments but not SHV. Hope more people will vote with their wallet.

Rob Brennan UK -> silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/2/2010 10:52:27 PM)

I bought it on release [X(].. Loved SH 3 ..

Good points for number 5

1) graphics are beautiful.

Bad points

1) utterly stupid missions .. i.e go and sink a CV ! .. yeah right , the Kriegsmarine sent out a boat to sink a particular enemy warship ?? .. who thought this up !

2) crew .. old system worked fine , now it's like a 1st person shooter without the gun .. (although as captain you should have one when the weapons officer doesnt load a torpedo as his 'morale is too low' .. sod that , shoot him and promote someone else )

3) no realisitc grid search maps .. used to be the great KM war maps . now its just a very vague blob.

4) enemy AI .. less said the better.

5) .. Copy protection system whereby you have to be logged into the internet 100% of the entire time for a non multi player game ??

6) Manual is less useful then toilet paper as its non-absorbant shiny smeary paper [;)]

Despite all that , and its obvious pandering to the console brigade its quite fun in an odd way. Fortunately the modders over at subsim are making great headway into turning this game into a good sim. Give it 6 months , buy it on the cheap (it WILL be very cheap in 6 months) and load up the mods .. should be a great game them. The developers utterly shot them selves in the foot with this one.

I wonder if the EULA allows them to sell your game play stats to advertises? [X(]

Terminus -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/2/2010 11:11:07 PM)

Nooo, Ubi wouldn't do that... NEVER...[8|]

Terminus -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/2/2010 11:11:51 PM)

Ubi have never made a good game. EVER!

They've published some good games made by other people, but have never made a good one themselves. Kinda like Paradox.

sdevault -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/2/2010 11:22:53 PM)

Well from what I read at their forum, and from some of what Rob has stated here...I'll think I'll steer well clear of UBI, no matter what the game may be.

Holy cow, what were/are they thinking!!!

Wait a second. I will NEVER play a game that requires me to be logged in just to start it up, especially if its a single player game. What a crock of...smelly stuff. It is quite frankly none of their business when and where I play the game.

sdevault -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 1:01:18 AM)

You ain't kidding!! They can kiss my (you know what)!

Misconduct -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 1:04:03 AM)

yeah I bought Silent Hunter 5, been a fan since silent hunter 1, and still ran local tournaments online for silent hunter 3 daily. However SH5 is the most degrading piece of <insert bad adjective>. I have been asked by UBI's team to run a tournament for
SV5 and gracefully said no which was my choice due to the ever so terrible settings in the game and highly unrealistic gameplay - so naturally they downgrade my account from admin status to "peon" which was the last straw for me, I closed my websites and said my goodbyes, after all the work I did they treated me like **** even though I never asked for a dime out of it. Oh and top it off, I was a lead Beta tester for SH4, and was dropped before SH5 due to concerns of "security".

Torplexed -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 2:10:31 AM)

Once I found the Silent Hunter V sound man was a bed-wetting momma's boys I knew the War in the Atlantic was lost.

"Benno is really still just a boy. He joined the navy after his father felt he was too much a “mama’s boy.” Benno is really a sensitive guy, and not tough like the rest of the U-boat crew. Hence he is often the victim of their comments or harassments. Benno doesn’t really have any friends on the sub, and tries to avoid the other crew. Bosun looks after him but can’t always keep him from getting harassed. Benno always writes letters to his mother, which of course when the letters are found is even more fodder against him! Benno begins to cry if stress is too high."

Seriously, some of the crew's bios as written are laughable. From what I've heard of gameplay so far, it sounds like you baby-sit the crew more than you command a U-Boat.

Misconduct -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 2:44:40 AM)

Well I admit I screwed up, I bought SH1-4 without reading anything on them, but SH5 shocked me how bad it was realistically. My only hope to salvage any money I spent on the game would be a Mod for realism.

Xxzard -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 2:47:47 AM)

I do have to say, I was watching SHV game in development, and the difference between the problems we have with AE and the problems there are with a game like SHV is amazing. I think it's really a case of having game developers who are also game players. This means it won't be about the money, the game won't be historically compromised, and it will play well, because if it played like crap, they simply wouldn't release it.

WITP and now AE, despite their higher price than other games, are the best games I have ever played, and absolutely worth every penny. I don't foresee any end to my enjoyment of the game, and I have never become tired of playing WITP. Anyway, I'd like to thank the developers of this really great game for all the fun and enjoyment of a game that is fantastic and fun in an environment of such dismal excuses for games. Thanks!

Have Silent Hunter 3 and 4. Not going to buy 5. The odious copy protection scheme is a big turnoff. UBIsoft also distributes IL2. They are working on a new BoB last I heard. If that too has the lame copy protection scheme I'm avoiding. Same with any new IL2

Sardaukar -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 8:03:12 AM)

SH III with NYGM or GWX mod and SH IV with RFB & RSRD...I don't need any stinking SH V. That protection scheme is ridiculous...and I thought Football Manager 2009 had silly protection scheme, but at least THAT did require you to connect only once. Or you could do activation by phone, even.

Too bad to hear. I know you looked forward to this game. I admit I was too, but less optimistical. Maybe over time the great modder community there can
fix the broken pices.

SHIII´s Grey Wolves Mod (GWX) was one of the best things ever made after a game release. 400MB of pure realism, damage model and dynamic campaign added to a game, that without it would be a simulation/arcade hybrid.
It extended its lifetime way beyond the original.

UbiSoft somehow forgot that the core of SH players were simmers and not the ego shooter crowd when they made part 4 and 5. [8|]
The most sensible thing to do would have been to combine the mods you mentioned, put them into new clothes and release the perfect WWII submarine simulation.
I still believe that the dominance of consoles kill the simulation marked. Everything you can´t also do with a gamepad is not even conidered. Too bad.

carnifex -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 2:41:13 PM)

Whether it's good piece of software or not, I just don't understand the point of SH 5. Didn't they do the battle of the atlantic in SH 3 or something? And SH 5 adds nothing. It's just more missions, sink more brit ships, blah blah. And the graphics are the same, the gameplay got worse, wtf?

carnifex -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 2:44:46 PM)

Well, silent hunter is all about U-boats (with a small sidetrack to the pacific for SHIV) so all simmers fully expect the same battle of the atlantic (which by the way, they cut off in 1943?! W-T-F?!).

I think if they made SHV exactly like SHIII, but just with upgraded graphics and AI behaviour they would be much BETTER off than the way they are now. They wanted to implement an RPG aspect to the game, which could have been fine, if they hadn't forgotten also look at the core gameplay. For some reason they rewrote that stuff from scratch as well. Never change a winning team.

The copy protection system is rediculous and since i am only on WIFI which has hickups a few times per hour i will forego this installment of SH. Like someone said: they shot themselves in the foot with this one.

One can only hope SHVI will show they are able to learn from mistakes.

Grow the &%#¤ up.

Your Paradox-bashing gets really old really fast. HoIx and EUx are among the best wargames Ive played. Ive been a beta for several Paradox games and their crew is a really great bunch of guys.

Now, you may dislike some of their games, thats normal, not every player loves every game. But to bash Paradox like that is %¤#&¤"¤ stupid. They are a company that backs up their games all the way, they release patches long after release and they provide excellent support for the modding community. Much like Matrix and Battlefront I might add. Paradox is also a small company that is driven by a few guys who live for their games.

Ive ignored you most of the time when you rant and rave about other game companies. But enough is enough. If you cannot open your mouth without thrashing another developer then you should shut the hell up.

For those that don't know, SH5 has a new protection system that requires you to be on the internet the entire time you are playing even if its a solo game, however biggest flaw back is if your internet is interupted for any reason the game saves and exits right away, giving you no chance to remain in the game.

Although the wording above is quite strong, I too don't get the bashing Paradox gets from T. And comparing them to UBI really makes me doubt your judgetment on this........ apples and oranges.

While I disagree with "Termi" in that I've found some PARADOX games quite entertaining, they are quite a touchy bunch if you suggest that perhaps the designer was in error about something. Maybe "Termi" got tossed off their website for pointing out some of their bigger errors. I know I did.

I have to agree with PH, (without the vitriol of course.) Paradox has made games I liked, and some I didn't. Same as Matrix. Like Matrix, their post-release support and openness to the modding community is excellent. HoI and EU are a phenomenal series of games. (Athough like many hard-core wargamers, I was disappointed in HoI3...) In fact, my next purchase may very well be Arsenal of Democracy, which is a community developed mod/rewrite of HoI 2.

Misconduct -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/3/2010 6:36:06 PM)

when I first signed up here, I blasted matrix for re-selling Cross of Iron which was a copy of Close Combat 3 without any real improvements on the game, to my surprise the Dev's actually had a chat about what to improve rather then boot me off like some of the companies I've delt with over the years, I'm not here as an enemy, but to help anyway I can which means all opinions must be noted and respected.

Never been to their website (I'm afraid some of their insipidness might rub off on me). I base it on the many Ubi games I've played. As for Paradox, I was oversimplifying: the original Hearts of Iron as well as Crusader Kings were good, but that's it.

Hortlund: Looks like YOU'RE the one who needs to grow up.

moose1999 -> RE: silent hunter 5 by Ubisoft (4/4/2010 9:58:23 AM)

Paradox is well above average as game companies go.
The EU series is an excellent range of games.
EU 3 has matured very well and is now quite a jewel in my game collection.
And they're going to make a Victoria 2.
Not many major game companies would throw resources into a niche-project like that.
The fact that I'll have to wait a year and 3 patches after it comes out to play it is just part of the game by now...
