Out of Eight - 8/8 PERFECT SCORE!
Gigantic living galaxies... A hallmark 4X strategy title... Grand strategy and classic 4X mechanics combine in a vibrant world...

Space Sector (Legends Review) - 9.4/10
I finish with this. If Master of Orion 2 was the 4X space strategy gaming reference of the nineties, then Distant Worlds Legends is the 4X space strategy gaming reference of the early XXI century. What are you waiting for? Buy it now!

PC4WAR - 9/10

[Translated from French] - Everything that didn’t convince us in the almost perfect Distant World has disappeared and there are a few improvements too.

PC4WAR (Legends Review) - 8/10
[Translated from French] - Legends doesn't transform Distant Worlds; it improves it, refines it and much more to bring it to a new level

Gamesquad (Legends Review) - 9/10
Distant Worlds: Legends is a superlative expansion to an already fantastic sci-fi gaming experience.
http://www.gamesquad.com/review/reviewed-distant-worlds-legends

Space Sector (ROTS Review) - 8.7/10
DW RotS made me feel in control of the lives and hopes of my civilization, I cared for them and could feel immersed in a huge galaxy interacting with other alien races. And that in my opinion is what 4X games are all about. That was one of the reasons I took so much time to review RotS, I was really enjoying playing :) And I will continue playing no doubt about that.

Game Squad (ROTS Review) - 8.5/10
Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi is a worthwhile expansion to a solid 4X strategy game. Really, there is no reason why a dedicated DW fan should pass it up.\

Eurogamer.dk - 9/10
Finally, a worthy successor to Master of Orion.

Review on Gamer's Hall - GOLD AWARD WINNER - 93%
[Translated from German] Enemy AI always has nice surprises... a gigantic play area... finally, a true space empire game!

Review on The Wargamer (ROTS Review)
The unbelievable vastness of the galactic environment modeled when fused with game play infinitely customizable to the player’s taste could well make this game an instant classic. I’m sold, and given my experience with the genre, that’s about as good a recommendation as you can get.

Review on Net Wargaming Italia - 8.7/10
[Translated from Italian] Distant Worlds is a game that is very innovative and intriguing
http://www.netwargamingitalia.net/giochi/distant-worlds/recensione/recensione-pag-1.html [translation]

Pelit (Finland) - 84/100
Feels, in a good way, more like Master of Orion 3 than the real MOO3 ever did. It is very interesting, unique take to 4X-genre, very nice to play but needs more bloodthirsty AI opponents. War, not only skirmishes, please. [May 2010]
Print Only

Absolute Games (Russian) - 77/100
Code Force is a small company, but it succeeded where more experienced studios failed – it created a worthy rival for Galactic Civilizations 2. Distant Worlds has its share of technical and ideological kinks to iron out, but this is definitely a step forward for the 4X genre.

Review on Gamer.no - 8/10
[Translated from Norwegian] This is a game that just gets better and better, and it has at least secured a permanent place on my hard drive for a long time to come.

Review on Cyberstratege - 8/10
[Translated from French] A believable and living galaxy... well thought out overall system, especially the economy.

Review on Estrategas de Sillon (Legends Review)
[Translated from Spanish] An illustrious representative of the 4x genre.

HsojVvad -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 7:26:18 PM)

Well I wouldn't agree with the perfect score, that would mean it can't get any better. There is room for improvement. Lots of improvement. I am not fimiliar with 8 out of 8 rankings, but I would say 7 our of 8, or on a scale out of 10, I would say 8.5.

That was a very good review though.

Wade1000 -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 7:51:22 PM)

Maybe the 8/8 does not have to mean perfect. 8/8 score could mean the fun potential of the game in the way the game is designed. Note that it states no multi-player as a negative yet it still gives 8/8. No game could be perfect because there are always improvements and wish list features for every game.

There is a perfect/full score but it does not mean a perfect game. Distant Worlds received a deserved perfect score. Think of past similiar games that are so much less fun than Distant Worlds.
Games are entertainment and entertainment should be fun as a priority. Confusion removes some fun but the Distant Worlds developers are refining the game to lower confusion, thus increasing fun.

Shark7 -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 8:07:41 PM)

There is also the small fact that multi-player is not always the 'be all end all' of a game...go try playing any number of 1st person shooters on X-Box Live! and you'll see why I often prefer single player games <shudder>.

WiTP is not so bad in this situation, as you usually end up with an opponent who is as much a grognard as you are, and you will both enjoy competing against one another. DW, being as complex as it is, would probably draw the more mature multi-player crowd...at least it seems that way to me.

HsojVvad -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 8:11:57 PM)

What is WiTP?

I find no multiplayer a positvie instead of a negative. Again I don't know 8/8 but when I read gamespot and they say no multiplayer as a negative, then I loose all obejectability gamespot does. They are suppose to review the game on a proffesional level not a personal level. Lot of times, I find multiplayer not fun, and a draw back, because that means more time was spent on multiplayer instead of single player. I for one am glad there is no multiplayer.

War in the Pacific...or War in the Pacific Admirals Edition (WiTP-AE or just AE). It's a massive scaled game based on World War 2 in the pacific...available right here at Matrix.

I'm like you, I usually prefer single player game, however, multiplayer if done right and you have the right opponent can be great. WiTP against the AI is no where near as fun as a game against another Human in Play by Email mode. It comes down to the fact that the scripted AI can never out-think you...where a real human can. But it is turn based and can be done in this manner.

lordxorn -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 8:18:26 PM)

Shark I totally agree with you for WITP, however I am no where near patient enough to play a game like that in PBEM format.

While I am really indifferent when it comes to Multiplayer 4x games based.

HsojVvad -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 8:24:42 PM)

Thanks Shark 7 for the quick reply. Maybe once I am done with DW or need a different game to play once I play this for over 200 hours, I will keep WitP in mind then.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 8:32:53 PM)

It is important to note that Out of Eight's rating system is based more on a buy recommendation scale than a scale of whether the game is perfect in every regard. 8/8 means Buy it Now, period. We really appreciate the vote of confidence in this regard and we are certain that the upcoming updates will validate this rating for those that are still having issues.

freeboy -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 8:34:19 PM)

yep, good review

Gertjan -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 9:26:22 PM)

Very good!

BigWolfChris -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 9:52:10 PM)

Nothing wrong with single player games, sometimes I just want to play at my pace in my own time
Sure I'm a big MP player, have played MP alot more than SP since broadband first came on the scene back at the turn of the century (didn't really bother back in my dial-up days)
But, some games don't gell with MP, sure they might do well playing hot-seat or lan, but that's because you're playing a game when you and your friend/partner/family/etc are there, but I find over the internet it's different

I feel the scope of this game, and the fact it's real-time would make MP less enjoyable, after all, how many of us pause while looking at something?  Or making a choice on where too send a certain ship?  Can't do that in MP, the game must carry on or it will forever be stopping and starting and players will be annoyed with it

Wade1000 -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/5/2010 9:56:18 PM)

If they implemented multi-player it would have to have periodic times pauses for everyone at once. Though, I prefer resources go to refining single player. As I have read, the vast majority of this type of game play sngle player most of the time.

Anthropoid -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/6/2010 12:33:20 AM)

Congrats on that review guys! Will add this one to my "to procure in future" list [:D]

JaguarUSF -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/6/2010 12:56:56 AM)

I will make a comment about multiplayer: as I stated in the review, I don't think Distant Worlds actually needs it, but it is something that is not in the game, so I made a note of it in the review header. Note that it did not impact the overall score in any way ;)

Ignus -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/7/2010 3:15:26 AM)

Regarding multiplayer: How is everyone forgetting Europa Universalis? You know, that massively famous and successful (by strategy game terms) grand strategy game? That's in real time and it works fine; me and my friends have sunk literally hundreds of hours into it. Distant Worlds could do the same if they wanted. I don't know about from a technical standpoint, but from a gameplay view it would work.

Anyway, grats on the review! Probably the first of many for what is likely the best 4x in years.

taltamir -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/7/2010 3:51:05 AM)

its really odd but the game is not even listed on metacritic...
have you contacted metacritic.com and asked them to list it?

also, selling on steam and impulse would undoubtedly increase the exposure of the game a whole lot.

deanco2 -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 12:51:12 PM)

My review at GameSpot:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/distantworlds/player_review.html?id=716154&tag=player-reviews%3Bcontinue%3B1

No one wants to read a long player review so I just concentrated on one aspect, hoping that would give the flavor of the game.

Gertjan -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 1:11:00 PM)

Any more reviews online at the moment?

I'm sure Matrix does not have the advertising budget required to show up on Metacritic.

HsojVvad -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 6:52:50 PM)

What is Metacritic?

lenin -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 8:47:16 PM)

Good balanced reply here...

Good, honest criticism and comment. I, too, love this game. It has the potential to be really great. At present, it is merely very, very good and the best game I've played in this genre for many years. Star Empires IV was good, but once you get the hang of the macromanagement here, you won't miss it. Good for you Matrix and the devs.

Justascratch -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 8:54:24 PM)

I feel redeemed for purchasing on day one of the release. 8/8 has restored my faith in my own ability to select a game I will enjoy!

OK OK this seemed more humorous in my head than it does on the screen.

lenin -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 8:56:02 PM)

It's definately a mindscratcher, but in a pleasant way, and full of suprises...

taltamir -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 9:14:37 PM)

What is Metacritic?

metacritic is a website that calculates an aggregate score of reviews...

so if a game was reviewed by gamespot, gamershell, and gamespy (lets presume only these 3), and it got 100%, 60%, and 4/5 stars, then metacritic takes each score, converts it to percent, and then averages them together (as well as provide a link to each review with a quote from the review and the score)... so that game would have a score of 80% total.

AFAIK it is free

new games have a "not enough reviews to provide a score" until at least 5 reviews are in AFAIK... but being listed will encourage reviewers to review it.

HsojVvad -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 9:31:02 PM)

Thanks taltamir for the explanation.

taltamir -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/8/2010 9:46:23 PM)

PS... you can check it out for yourself at metacritic.com
it also does more then just games.

it is also highly inaccurate about what is good, because as yahtze from zero punctuation says, every other game critic seems to have a pickaxe lodged in his skull...
they seem to have an imaginary "hardcore gamer" (14 year old male, no attention span, who thinks uber graphics in a 2000watt quad slixfire system means the game is awesome, more conservative graphics means it sucks, thinks a good story is boring, loves padded game-play length, etc) in their mind and they rate games based on how they THINK said "hardcore gamer" demographic will react to a game... they don't have much respect to the intelligence of said demographic, at all. Also they tend to rate games based on how much advertisement money they pour into the site.

JaguarUSF -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/9/2010 12:11:10 AM)

Which is why I rate games on whether I like them, thus the 8/8 score. Whatever, whatever, I can do what I want!

I did think the TMA podcast review was good...they were positive, and most of the issues the mention have been fixed or will be fixed (I imagine) soon.

excellent. I will read more of your reviews then :P

taltamir -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/9/2010 12:15:36 AM)

well... seems like wikipedia deleted the Distant Worlds page.
they didn't consider the out of 8 review "professional" enough and the info from bigger review sites was "more of a press release then a review"... therefore by their rules it makes the wikipedia page "blatant advertising" and subject to "speedy deletion"... I hate wikipedia sometimes. Shame about the loss of the site...
hopefull someone like gamespot will write a review because until they do wikipedia will not allow a page for distant worlds.
