Vetkin -> What's ur favorite weapon? And why? (7/23/2002 10:52:06 PM)

Some of my most favorite units in the game are flame tanks. I use them for ambushes on enemy infantry OR armor. I usually place them well out of sight (within woods, behind a hill, behind a building, etc.) so that when an enemy passes by.... WooOOOsSSSHHHHHHHhhhhhh

In my little experience in the game, flame tanks can usually kill or disable anything they hit. I've used flame tanks to ambush rampaging KV-2s and the crews either bailed out or the tank exploded outright (I hit the tanks on the front) The only downside I can see to flame tanks is that they usually come in lightly armored packages and have a range of 1 hex. But properly kept out of sight, they are pretty useful, even for last-ditch counterattacks.

If properly hidden, your opponent might even mistake his tank exploding due to an engineer unit. Of course after the ambush you reposition the flame tank, to pop out again in another ambush somewhere else. Hmmmm.... I was also wondering if you can mount Engineers on these flametanks... what an ambush weapon the 2 would be....

What do you guys think?

Belisarius -> (7/23/2002 11:42:19 PM)

The lethality of flamers is well known. I don't think you can carry anything on a FT, check out the carry capacity to see.

My fav gun is (surprise!) the KwK/PAK 75 L/70 :D
Awesome range, hitting power and fire control. Works for both offense and defense, only have to assign better protection for defense. And the PAK's look sleek.

bigtroutz -> (7/24/2002 2:47:22 AM)

Rockets, hands down, when placed next to an arty dump or playing with limited ammo off, although I also like medium naval guns (cruiser 8") quite a bit.

How many other units can target a 6 hex x 6 hex up to a 10 hex by 10 hex area with massive firepower ?

Vetkin -> Light Tank (7/24/2002 9:18:28 AM)

My favorite light tank is the M5 Stuart. It's fast, has 3 MGs for infantry, and a light 37mm capable of penetrating medium tank side and rear armor. And it is also heavily armored in the front for a light tank.

I once had 3 Stuarts (M3A1 version) defend against maybe an understrength battalion of Japanese troops (A and B infantry) They held for a couple of turns and pushed back maybe a cmpany or more b4 1 was destroyed, 1 was disabled and I pulled back the last one.

The one thing I don't like about tanks in the game is when their turrets get slammed and the main gun is disabled. Still good against infantry though.

Hades -> (7/24/2002 10:13:06 AM)

Katyushas(spelling) hands down. I love rockets. I love watching a Tiger being turned into a doughnut by a rocket.

Ograbme -> (7/24/2002 2:09:28 PM)

Railgun :D

Gary Tatro -> Well for me it depends on the Country I am playing (7/24/2002 8:57:06 PM)

Russia-SU-57 this little jewel is an assume light Anti-Tank destroyer. Has relatively light armor but carries 57mm L2 M1 Gun which has a max penitration with AP round of 103, and carries 8 rounds of APRC with max penatration of 161. It also carries a 12.7 AAMG the which cleans up all your infantry, half tracks and soft targets very well. It also has a speed of 31.

French-Has to be the Char B1 bis - relatively slow but has 2 main guns a 45mm Sa 35 and a 75mm Sa 35 both have a max penatration of 75 which is a lot for its time period. Also it has two MG's and a ton of armor. Most German tanks can not kill it during that time period except for the Sig33, Pzjg-1b, and 88's all tank destroyers.

USA-Rangers with the M9 bazooka-Hands down the best infantry unit in the game. No contest. Also 8'' Howitzers, they destroy everything. Ouch.

German-tough one here. I would have to go with the 88's or the half tracks. Germans by far have the best half tracks in the game. The 88's need no explination.

British- I would have to go with their 17 pnd AT-gun. Has a size class of 1 that is right 1. Max penatration with AP ammo is 184 yes that is right, and with APRC ammo it is 251. Ouch. Has a rate of fire of 6 and fire control of 5. And get this it can be carried by half tracks it is considered a light gun. Go figure.

I do not play many of the other countries so I can not give you a preference.

NaKATPase -> (7/24/2002 10:22:25 PM)

I have been playing the "heros of the motherland " campaign, and have become a real fan of the quad 12.7mm AAMG mounted on a Gaz truck.
I haven't done direct comparison testing, but this seems to cut through infantry even faster than the quad .50 cal on the M16 halftrack... of course, you can get taken out by rifle or LMG fire (it's a truck after all) but the mobility and range of the platform make up for it's fragile nature...

Capt Chris -> (7/24/2002 11:18:32 PM)

Minuteman III ICBM - You think Tigers can fire at long range? :D

OK, how about the Russian Katayushas(sp). What a show they put on...

Vetkin -> Weapon of WAR (7/25/2002 12:39:42 AM)

What about the Railguns from ERASER?? hehehe that has got to be the best, x-ray scope and all hehe :)

Kanda' -> (8/1/2002 11:37:01 AM)

Greetings...

While I don't really have a favorite single weapon, I'd have to go with any infantry unit armed with a flame thrower. Hides better than any tank, I've had too many flame tanks popped before they could move to range 2. But my FT engineers never seem to fail. My absolute favorite is more of a tactic than a weapon. My 3X 234/2 'Pumas' + 3 Motorcycles + FO +250 Beob formation last's all the way to May 45 in my long 45 battle campaign games. I just love getting that formation deep behind the lines to spot for my Hummels... That little 50mm L60 packs a whollop, the Hells's angels deal with the retreating infantry, and the Beob and FO combo brings in the big guns.
They spot a group of enemy tanks, the FO calls in the hummels to supress the snot out of them, the Puma's race in and deliver their 50/L60's into the rear armor pop pop pop boom boom boom, Or if it's a platoon of infantry or guns, after the big guns hit the Motorcycles jump into the same hex and shoot them up! Too bad they can't overrun!

Kanda'

Baldrick -> (8/3/2002 9:22:06 AM)

I've been struggling with "Long Road to Victory". For many attempts I used some 3"ATRs. Couldn't hit my chest if I pointed to it. Then I bought some 57mm guns. Can't miss, and nothing stands in its way. My fave ATR anyway.

In my experience a German Nebelwerfer is a lot better that Russian Katyusha...dont know why but Katyusha doesnt seem to hit anything or kill anything...Im currently playing Kursk PBEM and i have 6 Katyushas & 122mm arty while enemy got 150mm & 105mm arty that are devastating compared my rockets and have to say that i would trade Katyushas away without any thinking...

OKW-73 -> (8/6/2002 7:46:49 PM)

My favourite is Flammpanzer for very same reasons thread starter did say...just was wondering where did you get that 1 hex range? at least all i had this far can shoot up to 2 hexes (Russian OT's and German Flammpanzer at least) :)

Vetkin -> (8/7/2002 12:02:01 AM)

Omigod, they can shoot 2 hexes you say!? ****! :D Makes them even better. I finished a PBEM game a week ago and was saved only by Flammpanzer IIs, 2 Flammpanzers vs. 4 KV-1s = 4 KVs dead. Not much else could go through that much armor in 1941 (except 88s of course)

I always use them up close and personal!!! :)

Vetkin -> (8/7/2002 12:08:24 AM)

Why does it seem that 7.62mm or .30 cals are MUCh less effective than .50 cals??

Try it on an LVT Alligator, the version with 1 .50 and 2 .30s

You'll see that the .50 kills around 4-8 while the .30s will kill a total of around 2-5 (both of them)

I believe that all or most-all mech flame-thrower units in the game have a 2 hex range with the flame weapon. Only flame-infantry has the 1 hex limitation. This is certainly true for the US, Brit, Jpn, Ger, US_Mar units that I have investigated in the past.

One interesting discovery I made while playing a campaign starting in May of 42 is that while Brits do NOT have a FT infantry unit, the Indian army DOES.

Vetkin -> (8/8/2002 11:27:53 PM)

Wierd huh? Weren't the Indians supplied by the British since they were a colony?

bigtroutz -> (8/9/2002 12:10:25 AM)

Wierd huh? Weren't the Indians supplied by the British since they were a colony?

I suppose.

I suspect this was merely an oversight when building the OOBs for India, but its possible that an experimental weapon was tested by Indian troops 1st. One would have to do the historical research to find out the rights and wrongs of it.

Vetkin -> (8/9/2002 12:34:24 AM)

Maybe the Brits have found flamethrowers too..... uncivilized..... to use. :D

BTW, I just love British attitude when it comes to war. They are just arrogant,stubborn, and loyal to their King/Queen.

I liked the way the movie "The Patriot" portrayed the Brits.

"This is the King's highway! I suggest you move."

They are pretty bad at war however when you try to observe their track record...

They have lost the 100 years war.
They have lost in the Crusades.
They have lost in the American Revolution
They have won in World War I
They have lost to Rommel
They got slaughtered in Arnhem
They have won the battle of britain
They have won the Falklands war (Oooooo, against Argentina, wow ):rolleyes:

JediMessiah -> (8/9/2002 1:28:06 AM)

i too include flame units (flammwagens being my favorite) as a part of any force. they work well in low visibilty and dense woods (to make up for their lack of range) and do equally well against armor and infantry (love watching troops trying to assault my flame tanks only to get a fiery surprise). another benefit of the flame tank...you never really miss against infantry or loaded vehicles...the fact that the hex is on fire supresses the hell outt em.

i disagree however about the german halftracks. though they are great lil mobile mg platforms that can take a wallop, i prefer the us halftracks. the 50 cal/30 cal combo is a killer (50 cals should be outlawed - i had a king tiger destroyed by one ;)

i also prefer the 50 cal jeep, lil scout that can carry troops and have the vicious 50 cal (youd think the crew would scavenge the 50 cal once the jeep was destroyed)

-jedimessiah

G_X -> (8/9/2002 10:43:18 AM)

Holy Kingtigers Batman,

A Tiger II taken down by a .50cal? That musta been a hella-richocheting bullet after it snuck in through the open hatch.

Magic Bullet theory Strikes Again! O_o

Well, they won the French Indian war, but I think that was part of the 100 years. They won against the Spainish Armada(spelling?). They won the Boer War. They won they Gulf War. They won their operation down in Asia in the 60s. Anywho, enough of defending the Brits.

Vetkin -> (8/9/2002 11:35:33 PM)

Oh well, I like them anyways :D

A country that produced somebody like Kylie Minogue couldn't be bad :D

Hades -> (8/10/2002 11:12:57 AM)

Agreed.:D

Squirmer -> (8/11/2002 6:09:04 AM)

Err well actually Kylie is Australian but I think is she is resident here in the UK. All I can tell you for sure is that her (clothed) butt is on the front page of the tabloids virtually every day of the week ;)

Re the Brits and war - well the record is mixed it's true. We certainly can be arrogant but then so will most nations when they are "top dog". In WWII I think it's fair to say we did amazingly well in the early years but were extremely dependent on American equipment and supplies in order to do so.

Squirmer -> (8/11/2002 6:45:05 AM)

Getting back on topic ...

The Brits certainly do have flame tanks, the Crocodile (Churchill variant) springs to mind. I'm not overly familiar with the infantry units but I would think in the Burma campaign flamethrowers would have been around (don't know if this is in SPWaW though).

Talking about AT guns, I have constantly been frustrated with 88mms playing as the Germans. Due to their size (2 for PaK43 and 3 for FlaK18) they only seem to be able to get one shot off before they get spotted and a cavalcade of return fire descends on them. Even if they remain unsuppressed they don't get very many shots, 2 or 3 per turn. Also I find it a real handicap that they can't move without transport.

In contrast the British 17 pdr, which is almost as powerful (I have regularly seen it take out Tigers and the like at 30+ hexes), is size 1 and therefore much more able to remain unspotted. It generally has 3-5 shots per turn and can move 1 hex per turn of it's own accord. This makes it a much better (in game) weapon than the 88 IMHO.

G_X -> (8/11/2002 12:58:10 PM)

88's should be on hilltops in a forest or building, firing at 30 hex ranges or so. If the enemy is close enough to return fire, take the truck that's less than 20 points, load it up, and drive the truck back 10 hexes, unload, wait for next turn, start shooting again.

Keep truck and Gun in the same hex, and out of harms way.

Which is why you go for the truck as soon as you see an 88, rather than the gun itself. Without a ride, they're sitting ducks.

Vetkin -> (8/11/2002 11:52:29 PM)

I did the same thing Belisarius, instead of trying to suppress the 88 itself, I fired some 60 mike mikes into the half-track it loads on. It's weird how easy it is to suppress an 88 actually...2 tank rounds, even AT ones will give it something like 5+suppression. Add an MG and it gets even more suppressed.
