wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (4/28/2011 12:55:18 AM)

Summary of Operations 4/21/42

South Pacific: Japanese capture Vaitupu (Ellice Islands). AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Vaitupu (138,145)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 912 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 9
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese forces CAPTURE Vaitupu !!!

Combat modifiers
Attacker: leaders(-)

Assaulting units:
85th JAAF AF Bn (no previous report of this LCU in the known Japanese OOB)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SW Pacific: Coastwatchers report four Japanese ships now in harbor at Rabaul.

Australia: An air evacuation operation to remove elements of Australian 15 RAAF Base Force from an open coastal hex (hex 98,131) near Port Moresby to Townsville was completed successfully. 15 RAAF Base Force reached Townsville with 60% of its TOE strength – the evacuation salvaged many aviation, naval and general support squads.

15 RAAF Base Force along with surviving elements of the Port Moresby (infantry) Brigade were evacuated by air from the open coastline outside of Port Moresby after these units were pushed out when Port Moresby fell to the Japanese on 2/17. Three patrol squadrons operating PBY-4 and Catalina I planes carried out the evacuation.

Further air evacuation ops are underway to remove the remnants of C Coy/NG Rifles from Terapo. While this is a rather small LCU, it could either be combined with the rest of Port Moresby Brigade or remain an independent unit. As an independent unit, C Coy could be rebuilt and employed as a small raiding force moved by submarine transport.

Transport Convoy EX-5 with 52 ships from the Eastern US arrived in Australia via Capetown this game turn. Cargo arriving aboard Convoy EX-5 includes 87K supply points, 89 K fuel, plus five US LCU’s (Americal Division, 2 Marine Raider Bn, 2 USMC Field Artillery Bn, 94 Coast AA Regiment, HQ Asiatic Fleet). Asiatic Fleet HQ had been destroyed in 12/41 near Borneo during sea evacuation from the Philippines when transport ships carrying it were sunk by Japanese action – the HQ was rebuilt in the mainland US and then shipped to Australia. Current plans for Asiatic Fleet HQ are to employ it at Sydney as an auxiliary naval HQ in support of South and SW Pacific theatre sea operations.

DEI: Jap 18th Division continues pursuit of surviving Dutch LCU’s pushed out of Palembang. Japanese ground attack air strikes on these Dutch units also continue. AAR of the ground combat action follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philippines: Continuing Jap airfield bombing strikes against Bataan. 7200 supply points remain on-hand in Bataan.

China: All sectors in China continue to be quiet this game turn.

Korea: Sigint report entry for 4/20 indicating sub-units of Japanese 20th Infantry Division combined at Keijo to create the parent divisional LCU.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (4/30/2011 9:39:27 PM)

Summary of Operations 4/22/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/21 reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from unidentified Japanese TF(s) detected at hex 114,104 (NE of Truk). Composition, number of ships and movement heading of the TF(s) unknown, though it's likely the Jap TF(s) are either heading into or leaving Truk. If so, it appears the Jap TF(s) may have passed or will be passing just to the E of a patrol zone located N of Truk where US fleet SS Sturgeon is operating, no report of any contact between SS Sturgeon and the Jap TF(s). Current position of SS Sturgeon does not favor a possible contact between it and the Jap TF(s) during naval phases for the next game turn.

Multiple entries also in the 4/21 Sigint report indicate a heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Saipan. Detected status of Saipan base is showing an undetermined number of ship(s) anchored in port there, also aircraft based on Saipan – this information of little or no surprise.

South Pacific: PBY naval search plane operating from Suva reports spotting a Jap TF at Vaitupu – four ships (DD, CM, E, one unknown), movement unknown. It’s believed the spotted TF is probably the Jap invasion fleet participating in the just-completed landing and capture of Vaitupu.

SW Pacific: Coastwatchers report harbor at Rabaul is once again empty.

Philippines: Japanese ground forces renew land assault on Bataan. As indicted in the AAR below, Pillager dispatched numerous artillery, combat engineer and two Army HQ LCU’s into the Philippines (mostly from Singapore) to reinforce the latest attack. AAR of ground action follows.

Jap airfield bombing strikes against Bataan also continue.

The ground combat this game turn appears to have exhausted virtually all remaining supply point stocks in Bataan. Safe to say the end is approaching for the “battling bastards of Bataan”.

Given the possibility that Japanese ground forces may be at an equal level of starvation for supply points as their US counterparts (as I had drawn all available stocks of supply points into Bataan from elsewhere on Luzon prior to the Japs' arrival), the end could actually take awhile to happen. This being true if Pillager is required to ship fresh quantities of supply into Luzon to replenish the Jap army and continue the ground attack. What definately cancels out this "silver lining" for the US is the fact that the Japanese can replenish supply stocks on Luzon for their attacking forces while the US forces defending Bataan has no possibility to replenish theirs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (5/7/2011 7:10:52 PM)

Summary of Operations 4/24/42

4/42 Ship Upgrades: Upgrades for most US cruisers, DD’s and fleet subs are completing or now near completion. Nearly all upgrade activity has occurred in shipyards along the US West Coast, shipyard capacity at Pearl Harbor being taken by repairs on the two most seriously damaged BB’s from 12/7/41 (California, West Virginia) with the remaining available shipyard capacity at Pearl being reserved for emergency ship repairs. A small number of “quick” ship upgrades are being done at Pearl but this is being limited to keep open as much shipyard capacity in Pearl as possible for emergency use.

4/42 upgrades to US S-Class subs are being done “in theatre” at shipyards in Auckland and Sydney. These are gradually being done one or two at a time as individual subs return to base from patrol missions. About half the S-class sub “fleet” has completed upgrade or is now in shipyard being upgraded.

Upgrades on all US fleet carriers are already completed.

Hawaii: Unidentified Jap submarine detected due W of Lihue, reported moving on a W heading. No US surface ships in the immediate area of this contact.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/23 report heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Kwajalein. Detected status of Kwajalein shows undetermined Jap ships in port and aircraft based there, no other visible Japanese forces or activity is shown.

South Pacific: 4/23 Operations report entry indicates Japanese construction is likely underway to expand airfield facilities at Luganville. The Operations report entry stated the airfield at Luganville had expanded to size 2 this game turn.

SW Pacific: Coastwatchers report one Japanese xAK in Rabaul, a second Operations report entry for 4/23 picked up this ship in the process of arriving in Rabaul this game turn from somewhere in the Japanese rear-area.

Eight Japanese LCU’s (9 Garrison Unit known to be at Clark, seven others unidentified) detected this game turn in Clark Field base adjacent to Bataan. It’s anticipated most of the detected LCU’s at Clark are moving into Bataan to reinforce the next Japanese ground attack.

Burma: One unidentified Jap LCU detected in the hex adjacent to Myitkyina along the rail line and road from Mandalay. Little or no doubt this is at least part of a Japanese ground force advancing on Myitkyina to capture it.

A lone British infantry battalion continues to occupy Myitkyina as a rear-guard force, this LCU also being the last Allied ground unit remaining in Burma (excluding a garrison still occupying Akyab). All other British LCU’s initially in Burma have reached India, these units have since dispersed to rear-area bases in India to rest (recover disabled elements) and in some cases rebuild to full TOE strength with replacement elements.

Summary of Operations 4/25/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 4/24 report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tarawa and Baker Is.

Detected status of Tarawa shows no visible Japanese forces or activity, though some construction of base facilities may be occurring there.

Detected status of Baker Is shows undetermined Jap aircraft based there, plus one or more Jap LCU(s). Jap 61 Naval Gd and 1 Naval Construction Bn are known to be located on Baker Is. No other visible Japanese activity was shown at Baker Is.

North Pacific: Construction to expand airfield facilities at Umnak Is near Dutch Harbor is underway. Expansion of Umnak airfield is part of a planned expansion and build-up of a complex of bases centered at Dutch Harbor.

South Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/24 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Lunga. Detected status of Lunga shows undetermined Jap aircraft based there, also some evidence of possible airfield construction activity.

DEI: Dutch submarines operating off Palembang report several new contacts with Japanese transport shipping. Both contacts were daylight actions and (for reasons unknown) both sub attacks were made while surfaced. Latest AAR’s follow.

Subs are more likely to attack on the surface if;

(a) there is minimal danger to the sub ie no combat ships as escorts in the TF
(b) the sub captain has a high aggression rating

Summary of Operations 4/26/42

Central Pacific: Several entries in 4/25 Operations report indicate Japanese float planes spotted flying over Johnston Is. An unidentified Jap sub was detected in hex 162,116 (SW of Johnston Is) – the sub is reported moving on a SW heading.

South Pacific: Coastwatchers reporting 39 Japanese ships in Rabaul base. These ships are probably arrivals in Rabaul as there have been no ships reported in Rabaul for the last several game turns. Question is... what are these ships, what's on them and where are they going? Dutch submarine K-XV is now on patrol station near the southern exit from Rabaul.

Airfield construction appears to be underway at Ndeni, entry in 4/25 Operations report indicating airfield size at Ndeni is now 2.

DEI: Several actions reported between Dutch submarine K-XVIII operating at entrance to Palembang base report and Japanese surface ASW. AAR’s follow. A second Dutch submarine arrived off Palembang this game turn and is also on patrol in this area. Two Japanese TF (one nine ships, one six ships) have been spotted in hex 49,90, both Jap TF’s believed to be transports heading into Palembang to load up with bounty.

South Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/28 reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Rabaul.

Current port size at Rabaul is 4(4), airfield size is 4(6). Only one Japanese LCU (1 JNAF Co) is known to be located in Rabaul, though additional (yet to be known) Jap LCU(s) could easily be in Rabaul. Detected status of Rabaul is not showing any Jap LCU’s in the hex.

An undetermined number of Jap aircraft are detected in Rabaul. A number of Betty and/or Nell bombers had previously launched air strikes from Rabaul against targets at Port Moresby and other locations in and near eastern New Guinea – it’s likely these planes are still based there.

Detected status of Rabaul also shows an undetermined number of Japanese ships in port despite a conflicting entry in the 4/28 Operations report with a coastwatcher report indicating Rabaul harbor is now empty.

Allied submarines are patrolling both the northern and southern entrances to Rabaul. No report this game turn of any contacts with Japanese ships entering or leaving Rabaul to/from the south. New Zealand: Transport convoy WP-3 from the mainland US with LCU reinforcements for the South Pacific theatre arrived in Auckland this game turn.

Ships in the convoy carrying LCU elements are now unloading their troops in Auckland. Once all LCU elements are unloaded, plans are to disband Convoy WP-3 and then re-organize Convoy WP-3 as one or more Amphibious TF’s. LCU elements will then re-embark on the transports and depart Auckland for either Noumea or Pago Pago. A decision to take this action was based on (1) the number of transport ships and US troops involved. and (2) minimizing the time required for ships to unload US LCU’s at either Noumea or Pago Pago and also exposure of these ships to possible Japanese attack while unloading.

US LCU’s embarked aboard Convoy WP-3 include 2 Marine Rgt and 40th Infantry Division.

A second transport convoy (WP-4) arriving in the South Pacific area from the mainland US with one additional LCU on board has also been dispatched to Auckland and will undergo a similar process on its arrival in New Zealand.

The lesson to be taken from this action (and the need for it) is the relative merits of loading LCU’s aboard Amphibious vs Transport task forces when moving them into forward bases with small port sizes. This is especially true for bases close to the front-lines where you want to get LCU(s) unloaded quickly before your opponent picks up on what you’re doing and is able to launch an attack.

DEI: Japanese amphibious landing reported underway at Muntok. More mopping-up operations to capture the remaining Allied-controlled bases in the DEI.

johnjohn -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (5/18/2011 1:32:33 AM)

Look's like Pillager wants to move in the South Pacific. Have you any sightings of KB lately? Also looks like threats toward your supply line to China may be in the offering too. Any sign of movement toward Aussie NE coast? Seems quiet there as cleaning up takes place elsewhere.

In my battle with AI things have settled down. A spirited invasion of Dutch Harbor (2nd attempt) was soundly repulsed by the Army Regiment stationed there. A build up along Cox's B and Alyab has not progressed as I kept sinking the shipping. The enemy is bombing Pt. Darwin, but is taking considerable air losses in the process. I have four divisions and various support units (Armor, AAA, Engr) on the way to Noumea to form up the Lunga, Tassaforanga, Tulagi invasion. Five CVs and two CVEs are available to support the operation. Three new BBs and three CLAAs are with the carriers. It will be interesting to see if I can pull this off. Still having problems with the construction of the AB at Ndeni and in getting squadrons in place. Have NE Aussie well developed and many 4E bomber squadrons in place. Thus far, enemy is still attempting to take Efate and Noumea, getting spanked each time they try.

I sure will be happy when Allied torpedos work. I dont have enough S boats to make much of a difference.

Latest intel has Akagi back in service (reported sunk). It is my opinion that Junyo was sunk, which has not been reported. Always thought the sinking of Akagi was suspicious, when Junyo better fit the profile. Still, have four enemy CVs in the dispatch column, with Shokaku, Akagi, and Hiryu still in service. The AI is splitting them up again, essentially playing keep away. I have intel suggesting that enemy intentions are directed towards Midway. If so, I may be vulnerable there. But with four divisions at sea, I am taking no chances of getting pounced with a raid by diverting CVs to Midway.

I hear the pineapple crop is plentiful this year (42). Going to see if I can get some away from the submariner's supply officer. Good Hunting! Johnjohn

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (5/18/2011 3:42:36 AM)

quote:

Looks like Pillager wants to move in the South Pacific. Have you any sightings of KB lately?

I’m estimating Pillager is far from done with moving into the South Pacific if he has anything to say about it. In our last match-up in CHS, creating a strong Japanese outer perimeter line was a significant part of his overall strategy, and an action he would like to do again in our present AE game if at all possible.

As stated before in this forum, Pillager’s main objective in the Pacific theatres is creating a Japanese outer perimeter line that’s as difficult as possible for US forces to create a foothold in and (later on) for US forces to launch a breakout from that foothold. It’s actually a basic component of an overall Japanese strategy, both in terms of the game (this applying universally to all Japanese players) and what occurred historically.

As far as creating a Japanese outer perimeter in the Pacific, Pillager is still working on that objective and is far from completed.

What I can state with certainty is Pillager’s time-table for a Japanese advance in the Pacific theatres is considerably slower in AE than for our previous CHS (WitP) match. My opinion being the slower rate of Pillager’s (Japanese) advance through the Pacific is due more to the game differences between AE and CHS (particularly in the area of logistics) rather than anything I’m doing here as an Allied opponent.

In general, logistics is more difficult in AE than in CHS (WitP). This difficulty apparently applying to both Allied and Japanese players. Difficulties in logistics appear in two areas… (1) the quantity of supply and fuel available to conduct operations and (2) transportation for supply, fuel, troops, etc – especially available transport ships and their cargo capacity. AE is much less generous than CHS (WitP) in both these areas – and I’m not stating this as criticism of either game. If this is at all true (and I suspect it is), logistics is a considerable obstacle to the Japanese advance in 1941-42, logistical problems being an even greater obstacle to the Japanese than whatever an Allied player has or can place in their path. Though there are steps available to an Allied player which could make Japanese logistics more difficult.

One final note on logistical difficulties, the farther out you go from the home country (either the Japanese home islands or the mainland US), it becomes a more complex and difficult task to adequately supply, fuel, and transport your forces. This also being true for both Allied and Japanese players. This final note could be the decisive factor in Pillager succeeding or failing to create the Japanese outer perimeter line he wants – a failure the result of logistical problems delaying a Japanese advance long enough for Allied forces to adequately occupy and defend location(s) that Pillager would like to take for himself. Keep in mind the South Pacific theatre’s distance from both the Japanese home islands and the mainland US.

I could be wrong… but there’s a good chance I could be winning this race. Pillager is the hare that can’t run fast enough, I’m the tortoise slowly rolling a huge boulder at him.

While on the subject of logistics… fuel (or availability of it) could explain the lack of KB sightings. Sure isn’t a shortage of Allied targets or that the KB is being hunted down.

quote:

Also looks like threats toward your supply line to China may be in the offering too.

Supply in China? What supply. I’m already living off the rice paddies.

quote:

Any sign of movement toward Aussie NE coast?

Not yet (other than taking Port Moresby), but if Pillager can get the Japanese into NE Australia, I think he will. Pillager did this last time, I suspect he’d like to do it again. In our last game, he landed at and took Portland Roads (northernmost base on the Australian east coast). With some US LCU’s now in Australia, plans are underway to occupy Portland Roads before a Japanese landing can be made there. Whether the plan can be executed in time is the question.

Pillager will no doubt also look at NW Australia (specifically Darwin). He took the entire NW coast of Australia including Darwin and Broome, then advanced into the interior as far as Daly Waters. I think Pillager will re-examine the idea of launching a Japanese advance into the interior from Darwin as Daly Waters ended up being a “Stalingrad in the Outback” where nearly the entire Japanese army in NW Australia was encircled (a force of at least 10-12 Jap LCU’s including 2 and 5 Divisions caught in the bag) and no relief force (for the Japanese anyway).

quote:

Seems quiet there as cleaning up takes place elsewhere.

Bataan is yet to be a “done deal”, though I expect the battle there to end quickly as the US forces have completely exhausted their supply. Pillager has built up a Japanese force of 20+ LCU’s to attack Bataan – though in the end he could find this force to be overkill. Then the Japanese on Luzon could be having their own logistical problems.

The remaining Allied-owned real estate in the DEI can be dealt with at leisure. What Pillager needs the Japanese to own in the DEI, he’s already taken.

Once he gets all that clean up done, Pillager will be doing more to get himself moving faster in the South Pacific.

quote:

I sure will be happy when Allied torpedoes work. I don’t have enough S boats to make much of a difference.

I’ll second you on the Allied torpedoes.

For now (1942), we do have Allied torpedoes that work. They’re aboard the S-boats, along with the Dutch and British subs. While the number of available S-boats is not enough for everywhere, they can be a significant force when concentrated at one point.

Right now I have the entire US S-class sub contingent along with several Dutch subs operating in the South Pacific theatre, with emphasis on the Coral Sea and sea areas near Suva and Noumea. Auckland provides a nice base for them to operate from. The employment of S-class subs in this area is one change in strategy I've done between our game in AE and what took place in CHS (WitP).

I’ve already had two contacts between S-class subs and KB carriers in the South Pacific area (with torpedoes shot at the carriers) – not terribly healthy for the KB. With luck and a hit or two, one S-class sub could easily do the work of several US fleet carriers, and at much less risk. Pillager sending the KB on sorties into the South Pacific is tempting fate. And he’s certainly aware those S-class subs are there. Every KB sortie down there increases the chance of a hit.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (5/24/2011 2:04:49 AM)

Summary of Operations 5/01/42

4/42 Ship Upgrade: Except for a small number of cruisers and DD’s, most other US ships eligible for 4/42 upgrade have already completed the upgrade, though a few ships remain in shipyards still undergoing repair for the upgrade. Most of the ships now in shipyard for the upgrade are expected to be completed within the next 10 days.

Remaining US ships eligible for 4/42 upgrade that have not started the upgrade will be doing so as soon as possible – many of the combat ships in this group are now enroute to the mainland US as escorts in transport convoys returning to the US, plans are for these ships to enter shipyards and begin the upgrade immediately upon arrival on the US west coast.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/30 reports intercepted Japanese radio transmissions from Baker Is. Detected status of Baker Is shows undetermined Japanese planes based there, no evidence of port or airfield construction activity. Otherwise no visible Japanese forces or activity observed at Baker Is.

South Pacific: Transport convoy WP-4 arrived in New Zealand from the mainland US with 101 USN Base Force on board plus 16K supply. 101 Base force is temporarily disembarking in Auckland. US 40th Division and 2 Marine Rgt are fully unloaded in Auckland and are planned to re-embark once all transport ships that arrived from the US are unloaded and available for re-grouping into Amphibious task force(s).

A small transport ship enroute between Auckland and Noumea torpedoed and sunk by a Jap submarine NE of Norfolk Is. The ship was part of a group of small transports operating a continuous shuttle between Noumea and Auckland which has been continuously transporting resource points produced at Noumea to New Zealand since 12/41- these resources used for production in New Zealand. AAR follows.

Australia: Air transport of Torres Strait (Infantry) Bn from Horn Is to Townsville has been completed. This LCU is being built to full TOE strength in Townsville (from its current 50% of TOE). Plans are to dispatch it northward to form part of the coastal defenses at Portland Roads.

A number of US and Australian army units are moving into NE Australia to create and/or reinforce coastal defenses at Portland Roads, Cairns, Townsville and Normanton.

The bulk of US and Australian combat ground forces remain positioned as a reserve in SE Australia (Sydney and Melbourne) to cover potential Japanese landings in either NE or NW Australia. Pillager landed Japanese forces in both these areas in our previous CHS game.

It’s tempting to commit this reserve into either NE or NW Australia but once the force is committed into one of the two areas, the existing transportation infrastructure in northern Australia makes land movement between the NE and NW areas a difficult and lengthy task. And as a further consideration, a defense of western Australia (Perth) is also a possible factor. It’s not to say Pillager will attempt landing Japanese forces everywhere at once in Australia, but he is expected to try somewhere and possibly at multiple places in no particular order. Keeping the main Allied ground army reserve in southern Australia is not the best compromise plan due to its distance, but SE Australia does have the best transportation routes in any direction (north, west or NW) and is equally distant from all three “fronts”.

Japanese Home Islands: US fleet sub Plunger reports contact with Japanese naval task force NNE of Iwo Jima. The Jap TF appears to be moving at high speed and quickly departed the contact area immediately after this AAR occurred.

Beyond what's shown in the AAR, no additional information is available regarding the Jap TF’s composition, movement heading or whether SS Plunger encountered one or multiple Japanese TF(s) in this hex. Given the composition of the Jap TF in the AAR and its apparent rate of movement, this contact is certainly not a transport convoy nor does it contain slow warships. AAR follows.

Philippines: Japanese resume ground assault on Bataan. AAR follows.

Pillager could be finding the fall of Bataan an expensive and prolonged endeavor if the results of this AAR are true. For the Japanese, the siege of Bataan is consuming time, tying up LCU’s that could be used elsewhere, and inflicting damage and disruption to said LCU’s. It’s possible that Pillager may have to commit more Japanese troops to reinforce the effort to capture Bataan – these reinforcements also adding to any logistical problems Pillager may already have on Luzon.

US supply point stocks on Bataan are completely depleted. The possibility also existing that supply for Japanese forces on Luzon may not be much better off. If so, this siege could drag out awhile before the inevitable happens.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (5/28/2011 6:51:41 PM)

Summary of Operations 5/03/42

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-10 (14 ships) departed this game turn from the Eastern US for Australia via Capetown. Primary cargo aboard this convoy is US 32nd Infantry Division assigned to HQ Southwest Pacific, ships in the convoy are also carrying 28K supply.

Allied Pilot Training: I’m mentioning this observation more as an FYI than posting it as a game question or problem. While spot-checking my air groups in training status, I was noticing some air units had acquired large numbers of pilots in the group reserve pilot pool. I had not assigned any of these replacement pilots to the air units, this appears to be done automatically by the AE game system.

This phenomena occurs mainly in US air units, particularly USN carrier squadrons (especially VF) and to a lesser extent in USAAF and USMC land-based air units. It also occurs on a relatively small scale in a few RAF and Australian air groups. The end result of this “automatic” assignment of group reserve replacement pilots to air units is that the total number of pilots attached to a particular air unit can greatly exceed the full-strength number of planes for the air unit (example: VF-42 aboard CV Yorktown has a full complement of 27 planes and 52 pilots currently assigned to the squadron as either active pilots or in the group reserve pool).

As I have nearly all Allied air units in full time training mode, my solution has been to activate these pilots from the group reserve replacement pool into the air units. The intent of this action being to include group reserve pilots in whatever training the air unit has in progress. My assessment is that activating group reserve pilots from the pool might be useful during the time an air unit with pilots in the group reserve pool is in training. “Excess” pilots would then be re-assigned back to the group’s reserve pool when taking the air unit out of training mode in preparation for the unit to “ship out”.

It would be safe to say that monitoring the group reserve pilot pool through the Intelligence Report display to spot significant numbers of reserve pilots appearing in this pool (particularly pilots you did not place in the reserve pool yourself) could be a good idea.

Comments, suggestions are welcome.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (5/31/2011 12:05:19 AM)

Summary of Operations 5/05/42

North Pacific: Sigint report entry for 5/04 indicates Japanese sub I-23 detected at hex location 178, 51 due east of Dutch Harbor. No Allied ships are currently near or headed into this location.

Hawaii: US surface ASW task force dispatched from Pearl Harbor to locate and attack the Jap submarine contact reported SW of Oahu on 5/04 reached the hex location (178, 111) without making any contact with the Jap submarine.

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 5/04 report intercepted Japanese radio transmissions from Kwajalein and Tarawa. Detected status of Kwajalein and Tarawa shows no visible Japanese forces or activity at either location.

South Pacific: Operations report entry for 5/04 indicates Jap torpedo bomber spotted flying over Suva. No detected Japanese ships currently in the area near Fiji. Possible significance of this report could be any of (1) FOW, (2) Pillager now has Japanese LBA operating from somewhere within range of Suva, or (3) the KB is lurking near Fiji without encountering (so far) any of the half dozen US S-class subs on patrol north of Fiji and Samoa. Time will tell as to which of these possibilities are true.

Surviving elements of seven Dutch LCU’s plus elements of British 2/15 Punjab Bn remain scattered across interior areas of Sumatra, most of these LCU’s the remnants of what had been defending Palembang. Plans are for these LCU remnants to move about and threaten or re-capture ungarrisoned Japanese-controlled bases on Sumatra if and where possible. The intent of this action being to require Pillager to divert Japanese combat LCU(s) and chase the Dutch through the interior jungles of Sumatra until the Allied units are completely eliminated. This action can also require Pillager to maintain Japanese garrisons at bases in Sumatra as long as there are Allied forces roaming Sumatra capable of recapturing them. Not what you’d call a major offensive operation or even guerilla warfare but it’s still somewhat annoying.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (6/1/2011 12:24:56 AM)

Summary of Operations 5/06/42

US LCU Mobilization: I’ve spent the better part of two months (in game turns) saving up the 1,961 PP’s needed to get US 41st Infantry Division online and finally cashed them in this game turn to reassign the division from US West Coast command to South Pacific HQ. Plans are to get 41 Division shipped out to the South Pacific theatre as quickly as possible – transports have been allocated and are now in place to do this.

While it was tempting to use the PP’s to reassign smaller LCU’s on the West Coast into front line commands, it was also realized that something bigger was needed to occupy and hold “prime real estate” in the South Pacific. Artillery, engineer and base force LCU’s alone weren’t going to accomplish this.

There was some risk in taking the time required to accumulate the needed PP’s as Pillager could send Japanese forces in to overrun the major South Pacific bases before I could get this LCU (and others) online. This risk continues to be true until 41st Division actually reaches the South Pacific theatre area and occupies something.

With the departure of 41 Division, four complete US divisions will now have been shipped out from the mainland US to front-line theatres. Two divisions are already in forward areas – Americal Division now in Australia and 40th Division now in the South Pacific. US 32nd Division departed on 5/04 from the Eastern US to Australia via Capetown.

Still much to do... Immediate plans as of now are to reassign a yet to be determined number of smaller US LCU’s to front-line commands and ship these out of the mainland US as quickly as available PP’s and transport ship capacity allow. Virtually all US land based air units are in training mode at this time and will probably remain in the mainland US until such time as their level of training and availability of suitable first-line planes allow their effective deployment to a forward area.

Some work also yet to be done with US divisions in the mainland US and Hawaii.

Reassignment of 27th Infantry Division is not an immediate priority, though it is on the short list of major US Army formations to be “acquired”. 27 Division remains attached to US West Coast command and currently requires 1344 PP’s to reassign. The division is also at 68% TOE strength – it has been deliberately kept at this TOE level to reduce the PP cost for its reassignment. Once PP’s are expended to reassign 27 Division, the unit will then start drawing elements from the replacement pools to bring it to full TOE strength before it departs the mainland US. Current plans for 27 Division are projecting its assignment to either South or Southwest Pacific.

A longer-term project is the formation of 24th and 25th Divisions in Hawaii from their sub-units (regiments). As I’m currently projecting employment of both these divisions in the Central Pacific theatre, the need to get these units fully assembled and online is less urgent. Though an unanticipated emergency could change that. Four of the six regimental LCU’s in the two divisions are assigned to Hawaiian Dept (restricted) and will require approximately 2600 PP to reassign. For the moment, I do have all six regiments of 24 and 25 Divisions located at Pearl Harbor. The rest of the task should be relatively simple once the necessary PP become available.

The situation with US Marine Divisions is a little more complex. The two immediately available USMC regiments (2 & 8 Rgts) of 2nd Marine Division are already located in the South Pacific theatre. Regiments of 2 Marine Division are being dispersed to occupy supporting (island) positions for the Suva bridgehead. Formation of 2nd Marine Division from its sub-units has been deferred until such time as the division’s infantry regiments can be relieved by other US infantry LCU’s and all of 2 Marine Division’s sub-units are concentrated in a central location (probably somewhere in the South Pacific).

The one regiment of 1st Marine Division now in the game (7 Marine Rgt) is enroute to Australia and expected to arrive there within the next several weeks. Plans are to keep 7 Marine Rgt in Australia and dispatch the remaining sub-units of 1 Marine Division to Australia as they enter the game as reinforcements. Once all sub-units of the division are in Australia, 1 Marine Division will be formed in Australia as a divisional LCU. Plans are to employ 1 Marine Division in either the South or Southwest Pacific theatre.

Only one regiment of 3rd Marine Division (9 Marine Rgt) is now in the game and this unit will remain in the mainland US for the time being. Other sub-units of the division will be kept in the mainland US as they arrive as reinforcements. 3rd Marine Division will be formed in the mainland US as a divisional unit once all its sub-units are available and collected together. No definite plan has been made as to where 3 Marine Division will be employed.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (6/11/2011 3:28:42 PM)

Summary of Operations 5/13/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 5/12 report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Jaluit and Tabituea. Detected status of Tabitueua shows undetermined Jap planes based there plus ships in port. Port and airfield facilities on Tabiteuea have been expanded. No other visible Japanese forces or activity noted at Jaluit or Tabiteuea.

South Pacific: Reorganized amphibious TF with US 40th Infantry Division and 25K supply arrived at Pago Pago from Auckland this game turn and began disembarking during the 5/13 day naval phase. 40 Division and supply cargo is expected to be fully disembarked on Samoa within two days. Transports will return to Auckland after unloading to take on more LCU’s arriving in the South Pacific theatre from the mainland US plus supply to complete the US occupation of Samoa.

Coastwatchers reporting no Japanese ships in port at Rabaul.

While running the replay for the 5/12 game turn resolution phase, a quick "blip" appeared on the game map showing one or more unidentified Jap TF(s) in the middle of the Coral Sea in a hex location coinciding with the patrol area of a US submarine. No report of a contact between the US sub and the Jap TF(s) appeared in the AAR, Operations Report, or the Combat Events Report for 5/12. I'm not excluding the possibility this Japanese "blip" was an actual Japanese TF or TF's passing through the US sub's hex location and failed all checks for detection (by the US sub) as it passed through the hex during the 5/12 game turn resolution phase. If this "contact" proves to be true, Pillager has something on its way to Noumea that can be expected to arrive there within the next game turn or so.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (6/11/2011 8:34:04 PM)

Summary of Operations 5/14/42

US Submarine Operations: A gradual recall of all US fleet subs for refit and to undergo the 4/42 ship upgrade is almost fully completed and the subs are now resuming patrol in the Japanese-controlled “interior” sea areas.

Sea areas under patrol from US fleet subs include transit routes from the Japanese Home Islands to Jap bases in the Central and South Pacific theatre areas. US fleet sub patrols are planned to operate in areas off (south of) Honshu, E and NE of the Marianas, along both the northern and southern approaches to Truk, near Marcus and Wake islands.

Approximately 15 US fleet subs have started operating in patrol areas or now enroute to an assigned patrol area. Additional subs may be dispatched as needed to cover gaps.

Primary objective of these US fleet sub patrols will be to detect and identify Japanese ship movements – this capability now enhanced with radar these subs received in the 4/42 ship upgrade. Given the dud torpedo rate, any sinkings or damage to Japanese ships from these subs is considered a “happy coincidence” (luck being always good).

South Pacific: The “blip” on the 5/12 game turn resolution phase replay apparently is not an illusion…

US fleet sub Permit reports several contacts with the KB plus a separate Japanese transport (amphibious ?) task force in the Coral Sea. Situation map and AAR’s follow.

While the detected status of the Jap TF’s (shown above) indicates movement on a W heading, I am less than convinced they are actually heading due west (though I’m also not excluding that possibility). A due west movement of the Jap TF’s would place their objective in NE Australia – while NE Australia as an Japanese objective would be on Pillager’s “to do list”, there are bigger things for him to go for at the moment.

Like Noumea… Until I examined the detected Jap TF’s on the game map, I was expecting to see these TF’s moving on an E or SE heading (not a westward one). An E or SE movement path would definitely place Noumea as the Jap TF’s objective. I’m “smelling” FOW here and the next game turn will confirm that theory one way or the other.

I have five additional US subs (one fleet, four S-class) heading towards the anticipated course of the Jap TF’s if they are indeed moving E or SE instead of west. If the Jap TF’s are moving eastward, most of these subs will be in place to intercept either the KB or a Japanese invasion to capture Noumea.

Naval search air patrols are being activated from NE Australia and New Zealand to pick up movement of the Jap TF’s.

Moving on to the KB… What also cannot be excluded is a Jap carrier raid against either the Australian east coast or New Zealand – Pillager’s sending too much force to be simply escorting an amphibious assault. Whether the KB hits Australia or New Zealand, I have a minimum 2-3 days’ warning. Precautions are underway or being prepared along the Australian east coast, Auckland, and Fiji. Wherever Pillager is going (and I will have time to determine that), I will probably leave the KB with little or nothing to find. Lots of Japanese ships burning fuel. With luck maybe a chance to let some air out of a Jap carrier as well.

In the meantime… nearly all elements of US 40th Infantry Division are disembarked onto Pago Pago. The remaining elements of 40 Division plus the remaining 22K supply should complete unloading in the next game turn. Unless developments in the Coral Sea prove otherwise, the remaining unloading operation to land 40 Division and its supply on Pago Pago should proceed undisturbed.

Coastwatchers reporting 12 Japanese ships in port at Rabaul during the night phase, empty at daylight.

New Zealand: Precautions underway in Auckland in advance of a possible KB carrier raid on New Zealand. Unessential ships in port at Auckland are moving or preparing to move southward.

Transport convoy BP-4 arriving in Auckland last game turn from the US will proceed with unloading in Auckland for at least the coming game turn. Two USN VP air units are loaded aboard convoy BP-4 and I would like to get them disembarked in Auckland before it becomes necessary to move the convoy southward if the KB does move in this direction.

Australia: Precautions underway in advance of a possible KB carrier raid against the eastern coast. Unessential ships located in east coast ports have sortied and moving southward. Naval search flights have been launched from all Australian east coast bases, other air groups preparing for possible CAP or naval attack missions. All available submarines based in Australian east coast bases have sortied and proceeding to patrol areas in advance of the KB’s possible course.

Transport convoy EX-7 (48 ships) arrived this game turn from the Eastern US. Cargo loaded on board convoy EX-7 includes 183K supply and 29K fuel, no LCU’s or air units. Current KB operations are not expected to interfere with unloading and departure of the convoy.

Depending on the KB’s movement, arrival of inbound transport convoy EX-8 from the Eastern US could be delayed. This convoy will be held up at sea if necessary until the KB’s departure.

wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (6/14/2011 3:13:35 AM)

Summary of Operations 5/15/42

Eastern US: Ships from the first Eastern US-Australia convoy (EX-1) arrived back in the Eastern US this game turn, completing their round trip between the Eastern US and Melbourne off-map via Capetown. The convoy departed the Eastern US on 1/09/42 and made its round trip across this route in 127 days – this including both off- and on-map sea movement plus time spent unloading at Melbourne.

Four other Eastern US-Australia convoys have reached Australia, unloaded there, and now in various stages of transit back to the Eastern US. One additional convoy is currently unloading in Australia with another convoy entering he game map and due to arrive in Australia shortly. Two more convoys from the Eastern US bound for Australia are in off-map sea movement at this time. The ten Eastern US to Australia convoys include a total of 295 medium to large transport ships.

While the travel time across this route is probably longer than an on-map voyage from the Eastern US to Australia (via Panama), the added travel time is outweighed by the advantage of “send ‘em and forget ‘em” with little or no regard to what the IJN may or may not be doing.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/14 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tabitueua. Detected status of the island shows no visible Japanese activity.

South Pacific: No further detection or contact reported with the KB and other Japanese TF spotted in the Coral Sea on 5/14. The Operations Report for 5/14 did contain one entry stating a (unidentified) Japanese level bomber was sighted over Koumac – cannot be determined from this report whether the plane in question was a carrier-based type.

Current overall weather conditions in this area of the game map remain clear. Naval search air patrols continue operations from Fiji, New Zealand and the Australian east coast to pick up any sign of the Jap TF’s. Submarine movements in this area are also continuing. At this moment, it’s hard to make a call on where the Jap TF’s will reappear though it’s all but certain they will appear somewhere and do so within a short time.

Precautionary measures started last game turn along the Australian east coast, Fiji and Auckland are continuing, the precautions for the most part not a significant impact on transport or other operations at sea I currently have underway.

As stated sometime earlier, I had been planning an expansion of the bridgehead now centered around Fiji (in what I’m projecting as Pillager’s to be planned Japanese outer perimeter line) – this expansion involving occupation of either Samoa or Noumea. My premise being an adequate Allied defense of either Noumea or Samoa is possible with the forces at hand – these forces not sufficient to hold both Noumea and Samoa.

With the arrival of US 40 Division in the South Pacific theatre area, the decision was made to include Samoa in the bridgehead area. Pillager’s current movements in the Coral Sea probably allows me the liberty of building up Samoa with minimal Japanese interference (at least for the short term). Pillager may have an interest in Samoa, but he’s going to have to “reload” from his current operation(s) in the Coral Sea before making a serious move on Samoa. It appears likely a Japanese capture of Noumea will buy me some amount of time to conduct an Allied buildup of Samoa and Fiji.

All but a few elements of US 40 Division are ashore on Pago Pago. Unloading of these elements plus supply continues. Current plans also have the US 41st Infantry Division reserved for deployment in the South Pacific. 41 Division is now loading on the US West Coast for movement to the South Pacific – the convoy with this division scheduled for immediate departure.
