Convoy WP-1 (two AK, one TK) from the US West Coast originally bound for Auckland has been split up and now been diverted to deliver its cargo to NZ bases at Wellington and Christchurch. A lone AK with fuel cargo also bound for Auckland was diverted to Tahiti to deliver its cargo there. Summary of Operations 3/20/42 Pearl Harbor: Two AK’s with moderate damage arrived in Pearl Harbor this game turn after being detached from transport convoy WP-2 currently enroute from the US West Coast to New Zealand. Damage to the two ships were from unknown causes – convoy WP-2 had no reported combat AAR’s or contact with Japanese forces (of any kind). The level of damage to the two AK’s is greater than what would be expected from the usual wear and tear during sea movement at a normal movement rate. I had detached the two AK from the convoy due to reduced movement speed resulting from their damage. The two ships will undergo shipyard repair at Pearl once their supply point cargoes are unloaded. Damage levels of the two AK are as follows AK Wind Rush - system damage 1, float 14, engine 17 AK Alcoa Polaris - system damage 2, float 5, engine 10 My only theory behind this damage is the two ships received an “unlucky die roll” in a determination for operational damage at sea during a naval movement phase. Summary of Operations 3/23/42 For the most part it's been pretty quiet the last few game turns. Several questions can be raised on the present state of Japanese progress, though it is still early and Pillager has considerable time remaining to prepare and execute Japanese offensive moves. At face value, the rate of Pillager's Japanese advance in our current AE match is slower compared to our previous PBEM match in CHS. It's tempting to analyze and reach conclusions. At the same time it would be a considerable risk for an Allied player to make assumptions (let alone act upon them) based on any conclusion reached from an analysis of Japanese progress at this stage of the game. Especially true for Allied players without extensive knowledge and experience of playing the Japanese side. Pillager did start out rather agressively in 12/41. This was true with regards to - (1) naval actions against Allied ships in the Philippines and northern DEI attempting to escape the Japanese advance, (2) a relatively quick conquest of Malaya and Singapore, (3) early moves into the Gilberts and the capture of Baker & Canton Islands, (4) advances into northern areas of the DEI including Tarakan and Balikpapan. Then it all began to slow down... (a) Wake Is held out for awhile before it fell on the second try. (b) A later invasion of the Philippines. Was this a planned delay on Pillager's part, or there other factors? (c) The DEI is not yet a done deal. Palembang still in Dutch control (at least for a short time longer). Also a lot of mop-up operations remain against smaller bases. (d) While Port Moresby, Rabaul and much of the Solomons is Japanese-controlled or can be easily brought under Japanese control, the Japanese advance has not been a rapid one. Could there be some factors behind this? Some possibilities... (1) Shortage of available Japanese LCU's for offensive operations? Doubt it. (2) Shortage of available transport ship capacity for a continuous sequence of amphibious operations? Maybe, but unlikely. (3) Logistical bottlenecks (i.e. supply and fuel)? This is possible. While I'm experiencing few if any supply or fuel shortages, Allied supply and fuel logistics in AE is on a much less abundant scale compared to past experience in WitP. This being true, it's likely that Pillager may be experiencing logistical bottlenecks of his own on the Japanese side. Are these bottlenecks severe enough to slow down and/or restrict the scale of Japanese offensive operations? I would view this as the factor most likely to be true. In any event, Pillager's bottleneck(s) have not been imposed by any Allied action on my part. (4) Allied opposition? Pretty unlikely. I do not have the Allied forces, nor have Allied forces so far imposed any significant delay or casualties to a determined Japanese advance. (5) Allied strategy? The only action I've done differently on a large scale is drawing all available supply from bases in the direct path of a Japanese advance into a central location where an Allied defense is being concentrated. I've been able to effectively employ this tactic so far in Malaya, both Java and Sumatra in the DEI, and most recently in the Philippines (Luzon). The most noticeable effect of this tactic is it acts as a "scorched earth" action to remove all available supply points from bases prior to their capture by the Japanese - nearly all bases Pillager captured are left with zero supply points on hand at the time he reaches them. Where I could be holding up Pillager here is that Japanese forces he sends into an area cannot "live off the land" - requiring Pillager to bring in most if not all the supply points needed to feed Japanese forces participating in an offensive action. The "scorched earth" strategy in combination with #3 above could be creating some problems for the Japanese. On the other hand, the present slow time could be the calm before the storm. Enough wild theories... moving on to today's events. Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-8 (12 ships) departing this game turn for Australia. Cargo loaded aboard ships in Convoy EX-8 includes two LCU (7 Marine Rgt, 102 Combat Engineer Bn) plus 36500 supply. Hi, have been reading your AAR since the beginning, even have the big picture summaries printed and in a notebook, with the newbie tutorial. Great AAR and great advice given to johnjohn, and his insights are great too, have start the dec 8 scenario against ai and am in Feb 42. I do have a question though, u say to send ur engineers to demolish or destroy the oil wells, refiniries, and production facilities, not sure how to do this or how do the engineers do it, is their a "blow them up" or do they do this automatically when the japenese arrive. or does turning off the repair function in resources/industry do this. Have not heard of doing this in any other AAR, sounds like a good thing to do though.

It is Aug 4, hot and humid in the South Pacific. Just a quick update. Base Building has gone well. Luganville, Efate, Noumea, Koumac, Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Coen, Conclurry, Sydney, Suva, and Pago Pago are well developed. A sizeable number of fighters and dive bombers are stationed on the front lines. P40s and P-39s are in abundance in Aussie and rear areas. P40s are established at Darwin, Katherine (a 7 base now), Broome, and doing a credible job against the Bettys. Air Transport has kept the displaced Morseby force supplied and at full strength. Horn island remains in Aussie hands. Marines are cleaning up the garrisons around Luganville. Wasp, Sara, and Enterprise are patrolling off Ndeni. Yorktown and the biplane equipped Hornet are returning to Pearl for a long needed rest and upgrades. Essentially I am building up forces for the eventual retaking of the canal and the Marshalls and Gilberts. 13,000 troops were killed in an enemy attempt to invade Efate. They never made it there. Presently repairing numerous ships and moving supplies. Also bringing the SOPAC and CENPAC air HQ to SOPAC to increase the number of operational a/c. Invasion of Dutch Harbor repulsed, Long Island doing considerable damage sinking the transports and pounding the invaders (along with B-17s from Anchorage). Took one torpedo and is underway to Seattle for repairs. The 152nd Regiment was lifted to DH. Once in place it quickly dispatched the remnant of the enemy on the Island. Still not planning any offensive actions in Alaska. Got the invaders stopped, am wacking the Bettys badly, and am sinking everything that travels beyond enemy air cover. Life is good. The coconut supply is plentiful. Johnjohn. PS--mopping up the DEI is nearly complete. Burma/India is unchanged but for additional reinforcements and supplies being brought in. The enemy keeps trying to probe the coast and keeps getting all her ships sunk by the UK fleet. I don't know when they will run out of men, but they are incurring 25,000 in losses each month. That has got to hurt.

xnavytc, I appreciate your interest and happy that you've found my AAR forum informational in your own AE gaming. Alfred was spot-on in what he stated in his response, moving engineer units (specifically LCU's that contain engineer elements - i.e. squads) into a location can be effective and is often the only available method of depriving your Japanese opponent (temporarily, at least) of oil, refinery, resource and industrial facilities important to his efforts. It should be noted that the key thing is moving the engineer elements or squads from an LCU into the location where you want to perform demolitions - moving in the complete LCU is not required. Alfred was also correct in stating the demolition of production facilities is not a sure thing, there's a die roll involved. It's also true the presence of engineer elements in a location where you want to demolish production facilities increases the possibility that production facilities are actually damaged or destroyed when the base they're located in is captured by your Japanese opponent. AE does perform some automatic reduction of heavy industry and manpower production facilities located in a base each time it is captured by either side - it occurs when the Japanese capture the base from you and again when you come back to liberate it later. In my current match vs Pillager, I've used engineers for demolition mainly in the DEI, particularly at Batavia, Soerabaja and (soon) Palembang where I've had sufficient time to prepare this. Part of my opening strategy in the DEI was collecting most of the available Dutch LCU's with engineering elements and concentrate them in central locations (Batavia, Soerabaja, Palembang). This move maximized the two attributes of Dutch engineers most useful in defending the DEI in 1941 and early 42 - (1) constructing fortifications at locations that I actually intend to defend, and (2) maximizing the probability that oil, resource and other production facilities in these locations are heavily damaged or destroyed following the inevitable Japanese capture. As it turned out, a very effective (and sure) means of transporting (transfer) engineering units around the DEI in the teeth of a Japanese invasion in 1941-42 is by air. Load them on a ship, and your opponent can sink the ship (and you lose the engineers along with the ship). While Dutch Do-24 and PBY patrol seaplanes don't exactly have the greatest air transport capacity, they're quite capable of transporting troops and you have them in sufficient numbers. And you can send these planes out to pick up troops (engineers) from any coastal base location, regardless of its airfield size or damage to said airfield at that location. Not only did I have time to bring in Dutch engineer units from outlying locations on other islands to Java and Palembang (often after the Japanese capture of bases these units initially occupied), I was also able to transport Dutch combat ground units into Batavia, Soerabaja and Palembang to reinforce the Allied ground defence of these bases. Not that I'm going to stop Pillager from capturing anything in the DEI by reinforcing its defense, my rationale is more to prolong the agony and maybe "blow up" an extra oil well or two. While at first glance the most valuable use of Dutch Do-24's and PBY's is naval search to spot incoming Japanese ships, I saw little purpose in using these planes to spot Japanese ships that I had little or no possibility of stopping. A second point behind using these planes for transport purposes is that the Dutch Do-24's and PBY's likely rank very low (if they rank at all) on your Japanese opponent's target list - often performing tranport missions with relative impunity if their mission is even noticed at all. Turning off repair of industry, oil and resource production, manpower and other facilities at base locations directly in the path of the Japanese advance (especially Malaya, Singapore, Philippines, Burma and the DEI) should be done. If any of these facilities are damaged in a Japanese attack, you don't want to repair them anyway. Especially if they are earmarked for capture by your Japanese opponent. And even once the Japanese capture a base with oil or resource production facilities, you can still inflict damage - bomb them as much and for as long as you can. Many Allied early-war bombers won't hit a Japanese ship if was standing still, but they will hit an oil well. This proved effective in carrying out "demolitions" at Tarakan as I couldn't get engineers in there.

Summary of Operations 4/03/42 The Sigint report for 4/02 included a larger than usual number of entries for intercepted Jap radio transmission activity – almost entirely from bases scattered across the Japanese home islands and the Southeast Asia area. A glance across the game map shows no Japanese activity beyond normally expected levels. This could indicate nothing more than Pillager issuing a higher than usual number of orders during the Japanese orders phase and that a larger number of these orders found their way into the Sigint report. Not really any conclusions to be made on my part given what I can observe, I have no hard evidence of anything going on let alone what it is (if there really is anything). 4/42 Ship Upgrades: Nine US cruisers (6CA, 3 CL) plus several DD’s entered upgrade mode this game turn. Additional ships are currently being distributed among various shipyards and will shortly enter upgrading. The 4/42 upgrade affects a large number of ships (mainly US warships) – upgrades in 4/42 for many of these classes include enhanced flak and radar capability, many ships previously not having radar. While these upgrades will not immediately turn the tide (and are not meant to), the across-the-board improvements in flak and detection capability for US ships is quite useful in many respects (on a large scale) and should not be disregarded.
