Summary of Operations 01/01/44 Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 258K, construction engineers in Port Moresby now starting expansion of port facilities. A convoy of small transport and amphibious TF’s arrived at Port Moresby with 1 ground and 1 air HQ unit (US 6th Army & 9 Group RAAF), 70 Coast AA Rgt plus a quantity of supply cargo. The convoy was targeted after arrival in Port Moresby base hex by a number of Jap air strikes (below) – these air strikes going after light surface ASW TF’s moving with the convoy. No ships were hit in the air strikes. Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea. Total planes destroyed this game turn – 141 Japanese, 18 Allied Japanese planes reported destroyed • 9 A6M3a Zero (2 air-to-air, 3 ops, 2 on the ground) • 29 A6M5 Zero (20 air-to-air, 9 ops) • 1 A6M2-N Rufe (air-to-air) • 35 Ki-43 Oscar (33 air-to-air, 2 ops) • 11 Ki-44 Tojo (9 air-to-air, 2 ops) • 2 N1K1-J George (both on the ground) • 2 J2M2 Jack (both air-to-air) • 5 D3A2 Val (all air-to-air) • 23 D4Y1 Judy (all air-to-air) • 7 B6N2 Jill (6 air-to-air, 1 ops) • 5 Ki-21 Sally (all air-to-air) • 11 P1Y1 Frances (all air-to-air) • 1 E13A1 Jake (air-to-air) Allied planes reported destroyed • 7 P-40K Warhawk (all air-to-air) • 1 P-40N5 Warhawk (air-to-air) • 4 P-47D2 Thunderbolt (2 air-to-air, 2 ops) • 4 F4U-1 Corsair (3 air-to-air, 1 ops) • 1 B-24D1 Liberator (ops) • 2 B-25C Mitchell (both ops) KB has returned to its previous attack position due E of Madang (hex location 99, 129) and resumed launching air strikes on Port Moresby. Pillager appears to be replenishing KB somewhere nearby beyond reach or detection from Allied forces, though this replenishment appears to consist of only refueling ships and restoring available carrier air ops. Detected plane counts for visible KB task forces appear to indicate Pillager may not be replacing KB’s plane losses during its replenishment process – total Japanese plane strength aboard the 13+ visible CV/CVL’s in the four KB TF’s include 428 fighters and 210 bombers. The condition of KB's air groups and actual operational plane strength is a somewhat unknown quantity. This game turn’s Japanese air attacks on Port Moresby consisted of both KB and LBA aircraft. While the desired goal of sinking KB’s carriers remains beyond reach for the moment, a heavy attrition rate on KB’s aircraft strength is a good second-best result. Given the high proportion of air-to-air “kills” within the reported Japanese plane losses, recent air actions over Port Moresby is likely claiming significant numbers of Jap pilots together with the plane losses. AAR’s of Japanese air strikes over Port Moresby follow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Port Moresby, at 98,130 Weather in hex: Thunderstorms Raid detected at 38 NM, estimated altitude 29,000 feet.
