Summary of Operations 1/11/44 Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 290K, fuel 20K. HQ USAAF V Bomber command now in Port Moresby, this the second air HQ in Port Moresby (the other HQ 9 Group RAAF). Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea. Japanese planes reported destroyed • 5 A6M3a Zero (1 air-to-air, 4 ops) • 1 N1K1-J George (ops) Allied planes reported destroyed • 3 B-25D1 Mitchell (2 flak, 1 ops) Japanese troop transport convoy attacked by USAAF 2E skip bombers. Jap TF remains detected and visible on the game map, composition shown as 10 ships moving on SW heading. Japanese ships shown in the combat replay appear to be all medium to large xAP or AMC – based on AAR and detected composition of the TF, 7 of 10 known ships in the Jap TF received one or multiple bomb hits. Given size and number of identified transport ships in the Jap TF, likely troop cargo could include multiple LCU or a possible division size unit. If Pillager keeps this Jap TF together, it is not likely to reach a port in the coming game turn, making a repeat attack by US skip bombers quite possible. Detected status of Jap base at Lae – no report of airfield damage or number of Jap planes, 11 Jap LCU, no visible Japanese TF’s. (not changed from last game turn) Japanese fighter sweeps over Australian ground unit occupying open terrain (jungle) hex between Port Moresby and Buna. The LCU (Australian 2/3 Independent Co) had been moved to this hex to (1) bring the hex under Allied control, and (2) secure the NW flank of an Allied ground attack into Buna. I do not have an estimate of Pillager’s intent behind the Jap fighter sweeps – they serve no function that is obvious at this point in time (in any event they aren’t drawing Allied fighters out of Port Moresby).
