One reported contact between a US patrol sub and a B6N1 Jill air patrol near Manus (hex location 102, 121 SE of Manus) – this report indicating KB may still be in the area, possibly at Manus. There were several 1/03 coastwatcher reports (in South Pacific theatre ops summary below) indicating what could be possible KB task forces in Manus base hex. If Pillager does have KB parked in Manus, it’s likely most Japanese carrier air units are stood down to recover damaged planes and rest pilots. My estimate is that Pillager can refuel KB and replenish its carrier plane ops assuming Jap replenishment TF(s) are located in Manus and adequately stocked to do so. It’s less likely that Pillager has the ability to replace destroyed planes in the KB air groups or making significant ship repairs without returning to a larger base (i.e. Truk). If KB does return to attack Port Moresby within the next several game turns, it’s probably doing so with less than its full aircraft strength. Summary of Operations 1/03/44 (continued) AE Beta version: This is our first game turn running AE under the Beta version. Pillager has a new computer running Windows 8.1 and apparently needed to install the beta to continue playing. I’m still running Windows 7 – the beta installed and ran with no problem. I’ll need to look at the change notes more closely at some point. I had some kind of intermittent bug with the old version that involved adding new pilots into air units where I had to occasionally had to do a save then quit, go back into the save menu and restart the game from where I left off during my orders phase when I could no longer add new pilots into an air unit that had capacity to receive new pilots (i.e. after transferring one or more pilots from a squadron into the reserve pool, the AE game program occasionally did not allow transfer of the same number of new pilots into that squadron without doing a save and restart). The air squadron in question did have capacity to receive additional pilots. It was an intermittent bug - annoying at times but I played along with it. I can go into this issue in more detail on request for anyone in the AE development community that’s interested in the event this bug is still an undetected problem. Footnote on the bug I mentioned… I haven’t yet checked or looked for the “change notes” on the beta but it appears the beta could have resolved the bug I was describing above. Due to the intermittent nature of this particular bug, I’m going another game turn or two before it’s a final conclusion though it looks like a fix could have occurred. You may want to look at this in your AI game or PBEM in progress if you’ve going to or already running the beta version. My (Allied) Operations report for this game turn indicated a larger than expected number of LCU where devices had been upgraded – some of these I had deliberately set to receive upgrades (Replacements and Upgrade both turned on), other units were receiving device upgrades (Upgrade turned on) even though they were not set to receive replacements (Replacements turned off). This situation did not appear to cause a great deal of damage in my replacement pools but it certainly caught my attention. You may want to review the upgrade status of all LCU’s to verify that Upgrade is turned on only for those LCU that you’re actually wanting to upgrade at this time. I did notice many LCU that had Upgrade turned on but do not have any element upgrades (this category including HQ’s and some engineer units) – these can just as well be turned off. Checking for this “problem” is relatively simple, all the ground unit listing displays show both the current Replacement and Upgrade settings of each LCU. What had been somewhat a mystery is the sea movement route used by Pillager for ships going to or from Rangoon. This AAR may have answered that question –Pillager moving his sea movement route away from the coast and farther out to sea. If true, this theory also accounts for discontinued Japanese surface ASW activity vs Allied patrol subs in the Andaman Sea area – Pillager could safely ignore my patrol subs if he was routing his Japanese transport TF around locations where my subs were. Summary of Operations 1/07/44 (continued) South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 386K supply and 89K fuel on hand. Noumea airfield fully expanded, current port size at 5(4) expected to reach size 6 within several days. A transport convoy with five additional construction engineer LCU’s (3, 8 and 24 USN Construction Rgts; 23 & 24 USN Seabees) and 19K supply is now unloading cargo in Noumea. Construction engineer elements already ashore on New Caledonia (excluding the LCU above now unloading) include 620 engineer squads and 160 engineer vehicles on New Caledonia – engineers may soon outnumber the ants. A summary of current activity underway in the South Pacific theatre area 1) Northward movement of HQ, base force and construction engineer LCU’s plus as much supply and fuel cargo that can be carried from New Zealand to Noumea and Suva. Plans are to push as much of this stuff forward as possible as rapidly as can be done with the available transport. Also under consideration is plans to shift main destination ports for arriving WP transport convoys from the mainland US as soon as possible – WP convoys are currently arriving at Auckland and Wellington, destinations shifting northward to Suva and Noumea. Port facilities in Suva already expanded to maximum size, port expansion at Noumea is well underway. 2) US and Allied (mainly NZ) combat LCU in the South Pacific area are all prepping for assigned future objectives. TOE upgrades also being done (or already done) for a handful of smaller units still needing them. A transport TF has been dispatched to retrieve US 40th Infantry Division from garrison duty at Pago Pago – this division the last major US combat LCU still having a 1941-42 TOE. Once retrieved, 40th Division will undergo TOE upgrade with currently available replacement elements – this division already prepping for an assigned future objective. 3) Construction to expand forward bases continues in New Caledonia. Base expansion at Noumea is approaching completion – once Noumea is completed, plans are to shift construction activity into Koumac and possibly other bases surrounding Noumea. Some construction engineer LCU enroute from New Zealand now being dispatched directly to Koumac. 4) Parts of the US Main Carrier force have been repairing (mostly) light ship damage (system & engine) taken during recent operations at sea. This damage was widespread, affecting nearly all 150 ships in the 10 air combat TF. Ship repair for the Main Carrier force has been distributed across most major bases in New Zealand and eastern Australia – using shipyard facilities at Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney; 7 AR and one ARD (drydock) plus large numbers of naval support elements at all locations. Pier Side repair mode has been used very heavily and quite effectively even with CV’s and fast BB – pier side repair being more efficient in many cases compared to repair ship or shipyard modes. Ship repair activity has been underway since about 12/25/43 with full completion of repair to all ships expected within the next 8-10 days. 5) Lots and lots of pilot training. In short… practically nothing is idle. Coastwatcher entries from 1/07 Operations report follow. If true, this may be an indicator of Pillager possibly diverting activity toward Japanese bases farther to the rear.
