Actually, the way GOG has it set up you won't even notice it is using dosbox. I hove bought several games through them and all have worked perfectly on windows 7 64 bit. It really is a nice way to get some of the old games. They just added Panzer General II which I will be getting today...love that game

I can't say anything specific that one of the older games could do that a modern game can not, but the main reason for that is that I haven't had the chance to even properly evaluate many old games. And, yes, I do believe that they don't have much to offer in comparison, but I still like the idea of having a good collection of them. And even if each game on average only can hold my interest for an hour, that would still be plenty of entertainment if there are enough games included.

I'd love to see Battles of Napoleon by SSI released as it was made and with the same manuals.

I had googled up the game and found a pdf of the manuals.  One of the original designers is 2 by 3 games joel billings and Matrix's david heath was a playtester.

Absolutely one of my all time favorite napoleonic games!

Maybe I am just REALLY LUCKY, but the original PG2 STILL runs great on my vista.  That always blew me away... everything else from PG3D & CWG has so many problems it's almost un-runnable.  Actually, Civil War Generals already had numerous OS problems back on later Win95 systems, and considering it was MADE for win95, I am even more amazed that PG2 runs as good as it does.

I never understood why so many people complain about the FUZZY look of PG2, it always looks crisp and fine on my box.  I wonder if that is due to some type of glitch.

PG2 - you mean Perfect General 2? That was a nice game. Gotta see if my copy also runs on Vista...

I thought you were making a wise-crack Sire.  Nope, seems you were legit.  Though Perfect General was not a legit SSI product though.  Came from some other developer and isn't part of the series.

Anyhow, I think Panzer General II beats Perfect General II hands down :P

Yes, thatīs the game... sorry I didnīt notice you were referring to something else.

I loved Perfect General II; on the other hand I could never really get into the whole Panzer/Pacific/Star/Fantasy General series.

Ironically I have had great success running games in Linux using WINE (Operational Art of War 3, Guns of August, Operation Flashpoint, Panzer General II (the original Panzer General runs perfectly in Dosbox, and so do Perfect General btw), Steel Panthers World at War...). Maybe, considering all the problems there are running older Windows games on newer Windows versions, someone ought to port WINE to Windows.

Perturbo,..the same could be said of ANY game genre,....yet older games still sell. Older games that have nothing different to offer than newer games still sale, so will older wargames.

Heck, how many people have to mention in this thread that they still break out their old CD's and actually play their old wargames, before you understand,.....just becasue you have no desire to play an old wargame, doesnt mean anybody feels the same way.

So, find me a Fallout 3, 4, 5 and 6 that was made by the original team and has a lot of improvements while keeping the isometric view and turn based combat.
Also, I was refering to the post about old games being mainly about nostalgia.

Or a 2d shooter that is like Raptor: Call of the Shadows?
Or like Wings of Fury/Jetstrike?

The truth is that whole subgenres went extinct due to the whole "next-gen" thing going on.

Still, it may bring much less money than what G.O.G. does, as it sells a lot of games from genres that were hit much harder by the consolitis and "next gen" than wargames got.

GOG already sells games from genres that are still around in a very similar form, like First Person Shooters (ie Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon) and Real-Time Strategy.

Old computer games are just like old board wargames made in the 60's. They are still around they just don't cost as much nor have all the detail of newer versions. Playing old games is not nostalgia though (really wish some people would stop using that excuse) it's just playing a game that is older than what is new. Hell look how long monopoly has been around .....is that nostalgia because kids and people still play it today? What about Mouse Trap? I had that in my youth and it's still on the shelves today for sale 50 years later to the new kids growing up. Chutes & Ladders, Hungry Hungry Hippos and of course Rock em Soc em Robots, checkers, chess. Yeah I guess playing chess is nostalgia lmao.

I play old games because they are better than most new games not because of nostalgia. The new age is nothing more than old games with a graphics facelift and in most cases unimproved other elements of the games like the AI. I get more enjoyment out of a HOI than a HOI III. More enjoyment out of a HOMM II & III than a HOMM IV or V or Legendary or Princess. More enjoyment ouf ot MTW than M2TW or RTW or ETW. Some things just didn't need to be changed and many things got changed because of the mainstream market reproducing OLD games to death with less game and more graphics and charging more. How many DOOM's or HALFLIFE's do you need? How many FPS do you need for that matter? If you've played one you've pretty much played them all only the names and pictures have changed the concept is still the same as back in the late 80's early 90's. I can get just as much fun out of the origional Doom as many can out of each and every remake of it.

What's missing from the market today that we had an abundance of in the 80's and 90's is real innovation. Remaking an old game with a few tweaks here or there and making it run on XP or Vista or XP is NOT innovation in my book. For us old timers we really need to see something new that knocks our socks off and give us that WOW effect that we had back then. I haven't been WOWed in a long time. SPORE came mighty close but ended up being a childs toy but it did have that WOW effect for a very short time.

I'm still waiting for that wargame like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri where you get to create your own units and not some pre generated ones that the game designer thinks up. Stardocks Galactic Civilization 2 series allows you to build your own design ships and I like this also but that game still needs tactical combat, a multiplayer feature and better combat ai to go with it.

Someone needs to come up with a design for a wargame that puts the creativity in the players hands, but, doesn't force the player to become a modder. There's a big difference in designing ones own units and having to modify the game files to get those types of units. Sid's Alpha Centauri did it so well. If I'm not mistaken Sword of Aragon did it as well.

Panzer General II is on gog.com's top-10 list of most sold games this week. (Funny I started this thread the same day as they started selling that game, but before I knew of that.) Also on the list is Master of Orion 1+2 and HoMM3. Maybe a collection of older wargames would not sell quite that well, but still, I guess some of all the people that enjoyed mainstream hits like Panzer General could be interested in looking at other slightly older SSI games (even if they might not end up like them as much).

One thing that would be cool would be a company that would sell full versions of games from 80s and 90s. No digital downloads and stuff like that - full versions with boxes in original format, manuals and stuff like that.
Generally, if I like some game I have downloaded from an abandonware site, buying a full version on eBay is a must for me.
Playing a full game is a much better experience.

Now that is mighty, mighty tempting.

I sailed Tirpitz to St Nazaire and it was bombed and damaged. The game said 345 days to repair...! After about 200 days it was bombed again. Never got it back into service.

The big problem with this game was a 15" shell doing minor damage to a destroyer. But the campaign hasn't been beaten..
{WITHP - North Atlantic. 1/2 the micro management required. Some nice what ifs..Kriegsmarine spending increase, 1942 war start and so on, Gibraltar falls, Italians escape Med.. French fleet joins the axis...Now that's a game I would buy. }

Amiga was the best friend to many of us.
I could not count how many joysticks we have broken playing this game. (almost as many as when playing Olympics games)

Lol speaking of broken joysticks I still remember the one my best friend broke when we were playing Lotus 3. It had a plastic stick and he broke it right off trying to take a turn too sharp in that one. I guess I lost more joysticks to racing games than anything else.
