I'll definitely check it out. I'm guessing you mean they were able to cross on the strategic map or are you also talking about watching them cross the river on the tactical map?

Yes, on the strategic map.

I started my campaign with 60 minute timer on. I really don't need all that much time trying to take the bridges, however, I think it should make things interesting when the Germans counterattack. It allows more time for maneuver. I used to play CC with no timer at all. I would basically keep going until all VLs were taken or else morale got too low.

Meh! There are some battles when I just sat there waiting for an attack that did not happen (as German defenders). I eneded up reading a book for 15 minutes. What more 60 minutes? The enemy tac AI might be a bit too aggressive (using Japanese banzai tactics lol!) but there are times that they just stood back.

True. Usually I play the attacker or aggressively defend near enough to the enemy's starting position that I see action pretty quick. So most of the time I haven't had that much problem. It's only when the enemy starts in a small corner of the map and then I set up a defense on the opposite far corner that it seems the enemy doesn't attack at all. The reason I've usually chosen long battles is that when I am attacking it gives me the chance to feel my way around the enemy and out flank him if possible. If I make the battles 15 minutes then it's just a mad dash to secure VLs. That loses its novelty after a while.

I've nearly always played 30 minute battles for that reason - you get the opportunity to feel your way around the map better, and don't have to just "charge the guns" as sometimes seems required on shorter maps. However, when playing the Grossdeutschland mod for CC3, they explicitly stated that the maps were designed for 20 minutes of play, and it definitely worked out that way. So I started playing with some shorter map times, and it seems to have worked out okay.

In Last Stand Arnhem, I chose 15 minutes because I was playing the Germans, and knew I'd be on the defensive a lot of the time. And on several maps I've really just sat there and waited for something to happen- particularly since I've often just deployed my forces to protect the bridge, or the route the Allies will need to take. But I do normally like a bit more time to manoeuvre, and can see why you'd want the longer timeline.

GaryChildress -> Heumen: Another Bloody Bridge (7/14/2010 4:00:37 AM)

OK. Next battle. Once again I've stacked my BG with rifle teams in order to stage a bridge rush.

GaryChildress -> RE: Heumen: Another Bloody Bridge (7/14/2010 4:05:00 AM)

This one looks pretty simple. The distance is short and the enemy BG is particularly weak except for the two MG42 teams.

GaryChildress -> RE: Heumen: Another Bloody Bridge (7/14/2010 4:08:29 AM)

OK men! You know the routine. When you get to the bridge cut every wire you see.

CHARGE!!

GaryChildress -> RE: Heumen: Another Bloody Bridge (7/14/2010 4:15:43 AM)

I'm really starting to wonder if I shouldn't just let the bridges blow? The casualties my teams are taking just don't seem to be worth it. I'm not going to have enough purchase points come next turn. [:(]

The MG 42 on the opposite bank of the river, across from my men is tearing my teams apart!

GaryChildress -> RE: Heumen: Another Bloody Bridge (7/14/2010 4:23:22 AM)

To make a long story short...we have the bridge. I manage to send a few teams around to some of the other VLs on the map to improve my position a little. The Germans are almost out of men and request a truce. I decide to give them the opportunity to collect their wounded and I collect mine. Another victory but my BG is going to be very badly depleted next turn.

GaryChildress -> RE: Heumen: Another Bloody Bridge (7/14/2010 4:26:20 AM)

Axis lose 11 men. I lose 17. But I secured another bridge.

True, but so will the Germans - and they don't have any points to replenish the "oval" battle groups as they're just local troops guarding the bridges. So next time you could be facing just a couple of under strength squads - which in many ways makes things hard as you need to try and find them!

One thing I have noticed in this game is that lots of battle groups are quite under strength. You really need to stack them in order to get close to the 15 squads that we've become used to in the past. So, playing as the German, I really have found that it's tough as I have many of my groups consisting of about 6 to 8 squads of really crappy quality troops - many with either no or basic training only, and low morale. And when I look at them on the map, I see "Weak Squad", "Fragile Squad", or even "Useless Squad". Which I guess accurately reflects the fact that the Germans scraped together whatever they could and threw it at the flanks of the Allied advance. And that's certainly evidenced by the number of squads that just break and run with the slightest provocation.

So no more driving around on the British Airborne landing fields in a Panzer IVH as I fondly recollect doing back in CC2, but I guess it's more realistic.

Always enjoying your AARs. Have to see if there is one I can do of my own which would in any way be interesting.

Awesome job Gary.  Got the bridge, well done.  Love the AAR's cobber.

I'm not really worried about the static German BGs on turn 2. I'm just worried about the mobile BGs that will counterattack. With my BGs so depleted by the bridge assaults I'm afraid it may take many turns of light casualties at best to restock my BGs. I don't know, though. I haven't gotten to turn # 2 yet so I haven't seen what the replacement situation is going to look like.

GaryChildress -> Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 3:26:53 AM)

OK. Next battle, Grafwegen, is also in the 82nd Airborne area of operation. This battle is going to be a little different in that there's no bridge to rush. I know there is going to be a German flak 38 in the opposing BG. So I've stocked my BG with two 60mm Mortars.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 3:33:14 AM)

My deployment area seems to be right smack in the middle of an open field. There are several 2 story buildings in the area which, if occupied by the Germans could give me some headaches with their field of fire. There isn't a whole lot of cover to hide behind.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 3:42:42 AM)

I've set up a Rifle team, Rifle (MG) team and Platoon HQ team to capture a two story house on the left side of the map. The Rifle team will advance to the house covered by the Rifle (MG) team and Platoon HQ.

[One thing I don't understand is why a Rifle Team costs more purchase points in a battle group than a Rifle (MG) Team does. It looks to me like the MG rifle team would be more valuable than just a rifle team. Maybe I'm missing something.]

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 3:49:12 AM)

The second major objective for the battle will be the other 2 story house next to the VL in the center of the map. Keep your eye on this area. It will be the main focus of most of the coming battle. [;)]

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:01:01 AM)

I thought I was placing my mortars and Platoon HQ out of harm's way by putting them behind the hedges in the middle of my deployment area.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:07:39 AM)

I hit "BEGIN" and BANG!! The action starts immediately. The Flak 38 is on the right side of the screen pounding away at the HQ team behind my mortar teams. I scramble my 2 mortars immediately to start laying a barrage on the enemy flak.

[image]local://upfiles/17421/2B41E5D941E546CF82C0ED53A1EA4EC1.jpg[/image]

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:14:08 AM)

My mortars are engaging the Flak but their shots are falling all over the place except for near the flak. My command team is almost completely wiped out.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:19:21 AM)

Finally my mortars start to find their mark. The Flak 38 is hit!

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:25:21 AM)

A minute and a half into the battle: Finally the flak is out of action and no longer poses a threat. But I've been neglecting the rest of my troops sneaking up to their objectives all this time.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:31:41 AM)

I turn my attention to the middle of the map just in time to catch the Germans trying to occupy the 2 story house there. I've been sneaking my men to it in hopes of getting a good field of fire toward the VL in the middle of the map.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:38:32 AM)

It's a battle for the house at the crossroads now. I want that house and so do the Germans. It's my crack Paratroopers versus a rag tag group of ersatz troops. I wonder who will win? [8D]

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:43:19 AM)

Now it's close quarters combat time. Rule # 1: don't mess with US Paratroopers from the 82nd "All American" Division! [sm=00000055.gif]

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:47:16 AM)

The house is mine! Time to check up on some of the other teams on the map next.

GaryChildress -> RE: Grafwegen: A Change of Pace (7/15/2010 4:52:35 AM)

No sooner do I check my other teams but the Germans are back trying to take the house at the crossroads again. The Rifle Team inside has a good field of fire and the Germans are committing suicide.

Don't look now but German force morale is getting awfully low. [X(]

You probably learned this already based on sending your sniper to the NW VL but snipers can not capture VL's....
