dsawan -> Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/14/2010 5:01:45 PM)

Just sa this and love the maps but the unit pics seem too cartoonish or bland. Could they be replaced with blanc and white photos?

Of course, this is all personal preference, but I love those pictures!

dsawan -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/14/2010 6:41:02 PM)

So it is an option in the game than. I am considering buying this and need to know beforehand.

Hexagon -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/16/2010 4:40:49 PM)

I find fine the unit portrait but i prefer "kill" the soldier face dont like it, prefer see arty with crews and infantry units only as a group of soldiers even better than black and white photos for example vehicles looks great [&o]

PD: but i think that in units image see mods could be easy [:D]

Kung Karl -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/16/2010 7:17:58 PM)

I would also like to see more realistic pictures instead of these cartoons.

Meteor2 -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/17/2010 2:16:32 PM)

.. absolutely supporting Kung Karl:    PLEASE no cartoons.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/17/2010 3:28:44 PM)

Guys, these are not cartoons. Art is certainly subjective, but these were hand drawn by Nicolas Eskubi, one of the best wargame/boardgame artists around who we commissioned for this task. Here are some of his credits:

MMP Staff Artist.
Winner CSR Awards for Best Wargame Graphics:
Fire in the Sky (2005)
A Victory Lost (2006)
Battle Above the Clouds (2009)

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/17/2010 3:40:05 PM)

These are meant to be basically like the kind of art you see on a great board wargame - ASL or something similar.

Here's a larger pic as an example:

I'll say it again, the art looks fantastic...gives the game a great look. Thanks for the close up screenshot!

Hexagon -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/17/2010 5:31:49 PM)

Well, the artwork is great but as all in this live nothing is perfect and everybody has a different taste, i like all artwork except see the big face of a soldier in the left i think that mod this is an option [:D]

Erik,

that is just great! I love his work and I know it well.

oldspec4 -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/17/2010 8:34:23 PM)

I like the look of the artwork too [8D].

V22 Osprey -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 12:02:19 AM)

I think the artwork looks fantastic, especially like in Erik's screenshot with it being close up and crisp in high resolution. The unit cards aren't really "cartoony", I think they are great drawings though I admit the faces on the infantry unit cards are a bit awkward.

jamespcrowley -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 11:19:49 AM)

A big thumbs-up for the unit artwork; Eskubi is legendary in board-wargaming.

More importantly, the zoomed-in  map and on-board units look terrific! Every bit as good as a top class board game.

GrumpyMel -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 3:18:57 PM)

I like the artwork too and the map looks awesome. Does it have the ability to display a hex grid overlay for those of us who are a little spatialy challenged? [;)]

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 3:51:46 PM)

Hexes are not a problem. See below, here are a few more screenshots for you all.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 3:52:50 PM)

Here's another one - the goal wass indeed to have it look just as good or better than a great board game and I think that goal has been achieved. That OOB display is expandable and clickable by the way. Click on a HQ and it expands the sub-unit tree. Click on a unit and it goes to where that unit is on the map.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 3:54:35 PM)

Here's another one, showing some of the strategic cards you can play while in the scenario and also some of the French North African units.

Some familiar planes and the strategic map.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 3:56:31 PM)

French Armor... that's all for now, but I hope it helps you see how cool this game is.

Ola Berli -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 7:02:47 PM)

Erik,

the unit art and map art for this game is first class. This is how wargames should be!

But can You explain a bit the x number? For ex. in the last picture Hotchkiss-35 x45 is that actually 45 vehciles?

GrumpyMel -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 7:06:47 PM)

Dammit, you guys are going to make me spend money again! [X(]

I don't suppose you've included a "No, honey, I'm not playing another wargame. I'm just finnishing up some work I brought home." screen?? [8|]

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 7:27:46 PM)

Top notch artwork. Brings an exitement level to the game. One minor gripe, the column of data on the left hand side of the counters, it's almost impossible to read it's so small.

I need one of those big time.

Rick

Yes, that is indeed what that figure is.

Hexagon -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 9:00:06 PM)

Well, i like the map artwork is so close to my personal taste, pretty but usefull because you can know what, where easy [;)]

Ola Berli -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 9:25:29 PM)

Jim

thanks for Your answer. I was hoping for that [:)]

sol_invictus -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/18/2010 10:13:38 PM)

I like the map but not the unit artwork. I also think it looks a bit cartoony. If the game is solid I will certainly buy it in spite of the unit art though. For my idea on what really nice unit artwork is take a look at the Mapmod for France '14.

Ola Berli -> RE: Unit pics too cartoonish? (8/19/2010 12:21:55 AM)

Arinvald,

taste differ. Actually I prefer Volcanoman's mod for F'14. But that's is my taste [:D]
