Mad Russian -> Maps (8/18/2010 11:13:09 PM)

Here is what a 500 meter map looks like in Map Maker (MM) where you add terrain, height and structures of all kinds to your map.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/18/2010 11:14:07 PM)

Same 500 meter map in Scene Editor where you can make minute adjustments to all the structures on your map.

Good Hunting.

Same 500 meter map in the Scenario Editor where you assign the battle groups that will fight in the scenario/campaigns that use this map as the basis for the engagement.

Good Hunting.

Wow!!!

Can't wait to start working with the map maker.[&o]

junk2drive -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 1:53:45 AM)

You can use a gravity setting so that things like cows on slopes stand up instead of sticking out of the hillside.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 2:43:48 AM)

Here is what Map Maker put together for a terrain map for one of our most researched scenarios.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 2:44:52 AM)

I took that to paint.net and brought it back looking like this to add the fields and rail line.

Which evolved to this as I added the terrain for the village.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 2:48:26 AM)

And finally had all the village terrain put into my terrain map in the colors I wanted it. MM will put the terrain map into colors that it can use. I always put those in colors that I want. It makes it easier to put things where I want them.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 2:49:06 AM)

When this map was generated it produced a map that looks like this.

This map currently only has the trees put on it. Buildings and the factory come later.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 2:51:03 AM)

There is a factory complex at the north end of this village. Here is what it looks like. This is but a very small part of the entire village.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 3:13:50 AM)

This is a map of the battle for Alytus. This shows what kinds of different terrain types you can use. Each one a different color. You assign what the colors mean in Map Maker.

I have standardized some colors for my maps. Paved roads are in light blue. Dirt roads are in gray. Dirt tracks are in bright green tire tracks and gray middle of the road. Various shades of green for different densities of forest. Different shades of brown for fields. Yellow for orchards.

That way when I color over the terrain maps I know what it is I'm looking at and what it represents.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 3:14:59 AM)

This was an interesting height map that was generated in one of my early maps. This shows to good effect what MM can do. From flat to in your face elevations.

elmo3 -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 11:30:15 AM)

How about water? Lakes, ponds, streams, or rivers. Can they be added?

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/19/2010 12:18:15 PM)

Yes.

Good Hunting.

not only can you add them but you can have flowing water in the river, and adjust the speed and wave height. There are ways to have a two different water levels on your map to show how a pond behind a road outlets into a stream.

Here is a structure that can be put on maps with MM. Wood being the major fuel source in the 1940's lots of wood was cut. Here we have the results.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/25/2010 12:36:16 AM)

As the Germans advanced further away from the border the expanse of the country opened up before them. This is a map of any area moved through by German troops on 23 June 1941.

There was a comment made that you couldn't see beyond 500 meters in the original games in the series. Here you can see a great deal farther than 500 meters. This is a 2km map.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/25/2010 11:37:34 PM)

One of the things Map Maker can do is auto generate things like trees. You can put a distance modifier for that particular texture and have it make orchards and rows of structures for you as well.

Here is an orchard at the top of the map. Just below it is a field with a randomly generated crop in it. Shown as grass. There were no minimum distances put in for the crop and you can see that it is very random. You determine the density of each auto generated structure that you add to the map.

Geordie -> RE: Maps (8/26/2010 11:05:56 AM)

Have you any shots of water?

here's one I happened to have. You can't see in a still shot, but the water is actually flowing. and you can set the speed and some other parameters using Map maker.

there is also a light drizzle coming down, but it doesnt show much unless you go into bino view. Its really a llight drizzle.

thanks

Mad Russian -> RE: Maps (8/26/2010 12:58:53 PM)

What you also can't see, in that shot, is the smoke rising from the chimney in that house, to left of the bridge. PCO has several motion effects in it. Things that have a constant motion to them during game play. Water, clouds and chimney smoke are just three of those.

Good Hunting.
