After living through hundereds of them in my life, I'm finding it's not the magnitude as much as it is the duration and type of motion that really alarms me. If they go on for too long, you begin to panic and wonder if they are going to get worse before getting better. Also, ones that involve a lot of slow swaying that builds over time really have me diving for cover. As I approach retirement and strive to have a house free and clear of mortgages, the one thing remaining that can wipe me oout completely is a massive earthquake. When my house is closer to being paid off, I'm getting insurance, despite the outrageous cost of it.
