htuna -> Will this game have a Demo? (10/31/2010 7:40:51 PM)

Just wonder if it's going to have a Demo... Would like to know if the General gameplay is something I'd enjoy, before purchasing.. AAR's look cool.. but it's hard to tell how the game is actually played

SGHunt -> RE: Will this game have a Demo? (10/31/2010 10:23:46 PM)

I don't know about a demo, but I can speak about the game play.

At one level it is a very simple interface and incredibly easy to move and fight - although the strategic aspects are deep as you can see from the AAR.   But it is fast and fun in the manoeuvre and brutal in the combat.

Once you go off map and into the TOE's, support units, air units, leadership attributes etc etc and try to manipulate all of this stuff with limited admin. points it is very complicated.  You don't have to do this stuff, but you will probably want to as you start to learn the game, in order to squeeze as much advantage as you can.   I am playing by email at present and believe me, you will want to get into all this stuff against a human enemy...! I am not into the very fine detail, as some of the team are, but boy do I want to make the best of what I've got.

If the East is your bag, this is a must have game - and this is from someone who has mainly played tactical (Squad Leader, Combat Mission BB) and operational level (most recently Kharkov DotD) wargames before now.

(I make no money from this promotion!   [;)])

I'm guessing no demo.

Elsewhere on the Forums the question of demos for other games have been pretty well discussed. - the suggestion is that the developers don't really like them as they represent a lot of effort for not a lot of return.

I suspect your best guide will be the AAR's. In this respect I think Matrix is pretty good as they seem to allow for a lot more information of games in the course of development than you find with some of the big game producers. I lot of the tester AAR's seem to give a good guide to the game mechanics and the developers seem to be pretty forthcoming with whats in the game.

No demo, ok.
But what about a ingame tutorial ?
Will there be a tutorial ?

SGHunt -> RE: Will this game have a Demo? (11/20/2010 8:34:42 PM)

Yup

Joel Billings -> RE: Will this game have a Demo? (11/20/2010 11:10:20 PM)

We expect there will be a tutorial .pdf currently about 30 pages with screenshots (but still being added to). It goes with the Velikie Luki '42 Tutorial scenario which is a very small scenario. You read through as you play the scenario.

Jump in a play [:D] IMHO the best way to learn [sm=00000106.gif]

Will the game be playable in Windows mode? I have played several games that excluisvely ran in full screen mode and came with pdf-manuals which meant I either had to memorise everything or print it out instead of being able to switch between the game window and the manual, and I did not really like that.

There is no fullscreen mode. Free scalable window mode only.

Jump in and try a PBEM after a few turns you'll have learnt a lot. You think you know the game but there is so much to learn. You can have fun just "playing" using the basics by moving and fighting. Or you can really study the manual and then really start playing. Using your airforces along with Art and Armour giving your Inf support while the HQ's solve the logistic side to the game.

Jump in a play IMHO the best way to learn, you'll still get tons of fun out of the game. Bur really getting down to the nitty gritty parts of the game then you'll be the master on the battlefields. And you'll be having fun by the lorry loads.

A demo is just too short to really understand the game, the work put into this steep learning curve game will not be felt in a demo.

Just really grap a seat read the AAR's look and the screens and you'll be counting the days till the release. The wait and purchase will really be worth it.

I agree - the AAR's are an excellent advertisement for the game - any game.

One thing that did help to sway me to buy Command Ops -BFTB was watching a video turial for the game which included moves being played out - really gave me a good feel for the game and how its flow worked.

Fred98 -> RE: Will this game have a Demo? (11/22/2010 11:17:55 PM)

The video tutorial of Command Ops -BftB  is excellent and has set a new standard.

It is much easier to produce than a paper based tutorial.

And it means the manaul can be a whole lot smaller.

This game is going to sell itself based upon expectation alone. Only if the thing gives your computer a virus, or spread leprosy in your family are certain people going to avoid purchasing it. A demo would be for those who either don't know about the background, or read of it in forums such as this. What are the odds that the server will crash on the day of release due to excessive demand? Demo would just get in the way of anxious customers [:D]

TPM -> RE: Will this game have a Demo? (11/23/2010 3:28:42 AM)

It seems to me that with all the AAR's, forum discussions, screenshot packs, developers answering questions, etc., there is no need for a demo. Spend 5 minutes in this forum, and you'll have more info than you know what to do with concerning this game.

A note of caution. Video tutorials only work for a subset of learners.
So do printed manuals.
So do in-game turorials.

You really need all three, and even then it's arguable that you haven't caught a sizable minority of potential players. It's dependent on learning style, and though you can work out ways to capture the majority, everyone's different.

(Video tutorials are useless for me, for example.)

Steve.
