ny59giants -> RE: Rob - Look I posted! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/18/2011 5:52:39 AM)

I'm about a month ahead of you. It is interesting to see the difference on the India/Burma border. I expect mine to heat up considerably after my opponents mis-adventure off the coast of Honshu and the resulting carnage that KB inflicted from NE Midway to almost the doorstep of Pearl. He is down to 2 CVs and 2 CVEs that are undamaged. [8D]

I have 90 George coming on line in two days (just moved 90 forward to keep the R&D efforts moving along). I have only 180 Frank being R&D. Your numbers give me pause on how many more I should try to produce.

I would suggest that you bump up your Topsy production as you can lose a lot of transports in one turn if things go wrong.

jrcar -> RE: Rob - Look I posted! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/18/2011 11:32:14 PM)

Thanks NY59giants, always interested in comments!

The loss of CV's does force the Allies into a land campaign, or short hops. Therefore Burma and Nth Oz/SWPAC become very attractive. Although Andrew I think always planned this, there is at least a US Div and the 6th Oz div in Burma. These are critical to withstand casulties, which otherwise the UK forces can't sustain.

With aircraft I think we have about the right number of factories, however they should have been a bit smaller, in particular for the Franks, 10-15 factories of 20, rather than the 20 of 30 would have been better. george though is about right, it allows us to release about 200 factories to research the next typr, and about 200 to produce.

Agree with you on transports, we need to produce more, but with our supply situation I'm not keen to increase any further. We have plenty of Navy transport aircraft :( as stuff up on our part I think.

Cheers

Rob

Jill comes forward a month.

The situation inwestern China is improving for us all the time. Reinforcements are arriving nicely and supply is slowly increasing. The Chinese have suffered huge losses and don't have the supply to recover them.

Burma is still a concern. We need to fight battles favourable to us in the air and on the ground. To do that we have to accept that the Allies will get and may hold, a foothold and that we probably can't clear them out.

We have 4 more divs closing on the west China AO. we should be able to crack through and then aim for Kunming and give a back door to Burma.

We loose a lot of aircraft, but not as many pilots. We get a resonable number of Wellingtons.

Next turn we will go on the attack and try and catch the enemy on the ground...

Burma
We had concentrated our bombers forward, about 100, at Mandalay, fighters from Myitkynia to sweep in the morning, then a heavy escort to support the bombers flying in the afternoon after the morning raid against the main base a Silchar.Well that was the plan.

Insted Andrew switches his bombers to Mandalay, our bombers get caught on the ground and we loose 39, however we do quite well in the air and claim 120 odd aircraft for the day. The sweeps do well against Silchar. We have 7 pilots KIA and 6 MIA, so losses overall are actually light.

China is about to get real interesting agin too :)

Wow, you really have them on the ropes in this theater. Clear the route to Burma and IMHO you create a new and much more defensible LoC that avoids the awkward "how can I defend the open ground near Mandalay" problem. Well done. [&o]

Supply is starting to get better in the Home Islands. Resources are great, fuel is building again but oil is down. Lots of fuel and il is on the way. Stopping all the resource convoys in the DEI/Pacific as China is supplying us with lots.

Using the hub at Saigon/Cam Ranh Bay the railing to the Haiphong hub is working well.

Burma Situation 23 Feb 1943
Burma is the Allies main effort at the moment with an extra Aussie div, 2 US Div and US Tk bns committed, plus a large part of the Allied air force.

Recently Katha was seized by the enemy. We were trying to create a dilemma for Andrew by advancing north out of Shwebo, over the open ground, and into the jungle hex (circled). After routing one enemy Tk regiment (7th Hussars) we have been stopped by the allied airpower, and are now pulling back.

At Shwebo we currently have about 3 div, with two more on the way, plus the two to the north. They are prepping for Mandalay, which will be our main fight, however by standing at Shwebo he will have to prep his forces for there.

We are sending a force towards Kalemo (red arrows) to try and get behind him. Don't expect it to work, but you don't know until you try.

In the far north we are facing a large force in the jungle, but have moved out 1/3rd of the Imperial Guard to see if we can rout some pinning/support units....

We are starting to move engineering units into the main defensive line (dashed) along the jungle facing the open central Burmese plain to start digging defences.

All the immediate reinforcements we have are now committed. We have a strong air force and plentiful supply. Our aim now is to delay the inevitable as long as possible.

We have reinforced our line of Communications down the Malay coast in case he goes for an amphib attack. But we are stretched very thin...

We now need to create delay (about a year’s worth!) without becoming smashed by the Allied air and ground power.

Cribtop -> RE: Rob - Look I posted! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/26/2011 5:28:48 PM)

If China was the unsolvable Japanese strategic problem that led to the war, Burma in AE is the unsolvable operational problem that leads to retreat to Prome. IRL, Allied efforts in Burma foundered on terrain and supply issues for a long time.

jrcar -> RE: Rob - Look I posted! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/26/2011 7:32:27 PM)

Cribtop you are right. Yes like in China you can "unbalance" the theatre through the application of additional forces, so far it looks like around 3 additional divisions.

I like exploring the "land route" through SEASIA. Militarily I think it is probably the better option than the "Pacific" route. It was real life politics and dogma that stopped it being undertaken during the war.

Andrew is suffering supply problems and always will until Rangoon is taken; maybe not as much as real life, however in the game you can't build/upgrade roads.

We have got ourselves in this "mess" because we sent forces to China, so this is the consequence we need to face for those actions.

The Allied fighter units in Burma are becoming very tattered. We may not be stopping the 4E but we are getting a nice toll on the 2E. Come on george, it will be interesting to see what it does in mass...

jrcar,

I tend to agree about SEASIA and China.

Your comment seems at odds with your initial strategy of investing most of your assets in SoPac. After all the game months that have passed, do you think it was worth it going down that route?

I am curious for your thoughts in the matter, as I am only a few months behind you in my game and invested most of my assets in offensive operations in Burma/India. As a new player, I wonder which is better.

jrcar -> RE: Rob - Look I posted! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/26/2011 8:17:06 PM)

G'Day Olorin,

yes we invested heavily in SWPAC and cleared out the SOPAC, it is the most logical/easiest route for the Allies early on. A consquence of this is that we sank a good part of the US fleet... so yes it was worth it :) Now we are moving some of those assets west to Burma (2 Div's have been moved) and to the DEI (BF and engineers). We can afford to do that now as our defensive line in the SWPAC is very very strong, all level 6 forts (including Port Moresby), good interlocking airfields and reserves of supply and fuel.

We are currently building the third line of Defence in this area, so while quiet we are taking the opportunity to dig in as hard as we can.

Where the real choice was made though was either sit with divs in Burma (which would have encouraged Andrew to try something bold, like Sumatra/Malaya) or strip that theatre to collapse China, and risk Allied forces in Burma.

That has worked better than we expected, and now I think we can hold Burma far enough north so that the 4E can't destroy to much when strat bombing begins in a few months. The extra industry and resources we have captured in China should more than compensate for the loss of some stuff to heavy bombing. While we have lost territory in Burma, we are attriting his air force at a time when it still isn't really ready to sustain heavy losses.

Of course comitting as much as he has to Burma means India is tempting for a counter attack...

Our main concern though is the 4-6 US divs that are currently undetected. Having them rampage in Java or Sumatra woud not be nice for us!

IMHO as Japanese you need the SWPAC solidly in your hands as there are too many places for the Allies to land and "quickly" hop thier way to the Philippines and there goes your fuel/oil. SOPAC is a nice to have, we mainly did it to smash ground units and give us an opportunity to raid the Allied convoys to OZ.

You need to deny Burma as long as you can. India is possible in Scenario 2, but not viable in 1.

Cheers

Rob

Indeed, massing in one place always creates the opportunity to get hit in another. I concur that you have gained more in SOPAC and China than you will lose in Burma. IRL had the Allies committed to an amphib to get past the nasty border terrain then they probably get to vital industry more quickly than the path through SWPAC, but that choice was mostly politics as you point out. The initial amphib would have been riskier than WATCHTOWER and CARTWHEEL, but the payoff greater as well.

Olorin -> RE: Rob - Look I posted! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/26/2011 10:01:35 PM)

Hi Rob, thanks for the reply.

It seems that we both made the choice to be aggressive in China and use most assets to one area of the map, at the expense of the DEI. We both invaded N.Australia as a security measure against an early counterattack in the DEI. Our only fear is a deep allied strike, using Perth or Colombo as a base.

Disregarding any carrier battles (since they are different from game to game, too many variables), the basic question is whether it's better to destroy American ground troops or British ones. You obviously went with the first choice.

Another question is whether you are able to end the war with China in the near future and then move over 10.000 AV to Burma and Malaya and secure that theater for the rest of the game.

As for the counterattack in India: are you seriously contemplating it? Is it even possible with the current troops dispositions? And if yes, where? Chittagong perhaps?

Cheers

Rob

Cribtop you are right. Yes like in China you can "unbalance" the theatre through the application of additional forces, so far it looks like around 3 additional divisions.

I like exploring the "land route" through SEASIA. Militarily I think it is probably the better option than the "Pacific" route. It was real life politics and dogma that stopped it being undertaken during the war.

jrcar,

I tend to agree about SEASIA and China.

Your comment seems at odds with your initial strategy of investing most of your assets in SoPac. After all this game months have passed, do you think it was worth it going down that route?

I am curious for your thoughts in the matter, as I am only a few months behind you in my game and invested most of my assets in offensive operations in Burma/India. As a new player, I wonder which is better.

Thanks Nick, more comments below.

quote:

Hi Rob, thanks for the reply.

It seems that we both made the choice to be aggressive in China and use most assets to one area of the map, at the expense of the DEI. We both invaded N.Australia as a security measure against an early counterattack in the DEI. Our only fear is a deep allied strike, using Perth or Colombo as a base.

Yes we have a similar fear. We are currently reconing Perth, which is empty. Interestingly the area around Adelaide has been built up... I suspect that is his main "import" area for convoys from the East and West.

Columbo we know houses a number of UK fleet units. He sends raids out from here, which we usually detect and send back... although he has been very quiet recently... If the US CV's came this way it could get intersting fast.

quote:

Disregarding any carrier battles (since they are different from game to game, too many variables), the basic question is whether it's better to destroy American ground troops or British ones. You obviously went with the first choice.

We wanted both :) Basically apart from a few key locations, Rabaul, Port Moresby, the rest was "adhoc" and largely unplanned... we "planned" to do something, somewhere, and let a recon pull approach guide us. In the end we were able to maul US stuff, the Brits largely got away.

quote:

Another question is whether you are able to end the war with China in the near future and then move over 10.000 AV to Burma and Malaya and secure that theater for the rest of the game.

Yes it will be intersting to see, and why we decided to reinforce our recon pull successes, at the expense of Burma... If we hadn't of had the success we did in China then Burma would have been stronger, and Andrew wouldn't be in there.

quote:

As for the counterattack in India: are you seriously contemplating it? Is it even possible with the current troops dispositions? And if yes, where? Chittagong perhaps?

We are seriously contemplating lots of things :) It depends on what the end state is that you are after to define "posible"... are we out to conquer India? No.

As we did with Nick and Joe on the other foot (although with the advantage of higher supply levels than this BETA allows) Win a couple of battles and the Allied tide can quickly overcome Japanese defence if the UK divs are reinforced (we used 2 Oz and 1 US div). With 2 US div and an Oz div in Burma Andrew can afford and can sustain some losses (and one reason we are keen to maul Australian units in Oz).

He has the ground force but without air supperiority he can't advance that far... and that is why we have been focused on changing air parity in Burma into air dominance for our side... we are getting close.

What we need to do is slow Burma down. One way to do that is through direct action on that front (in fact regardless we need to do some of that). Other ways include indirect action in a related area... but where :)

jrcar -> The Great Race! (no AOFFEN or Mark) (12/26/2011 10:36:17 PM)

Here is the inaugural Great Chinese Race.

The goal to get to Chihkiang and the road junction.

The contenders are 750 AV of the Japanese army vs a stack of Chinese "stuff".

At the moment it looks like a draw, we will take the city, but he will probably get enough AV into the road junction to stop our rush.

We are sending more forces this way, however we have also started a general advance to get the real target, the cities with industry in the centre.

We just about have all the units in Kweiyang to form the 3rd Tank Div, those forces can then head west to take the heavy industry of Kunming and open the back door to Burma.

Cheers

Rob
