Vorlon and Wraith

Sabin Stargem -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 2:44:01 AM)

I suspect that the Asgard would have an easier time with Cylons than with the other mechanical race that they have to deal with. (This statement based on watching Season 1 of Neo BSG, haven't got much further yet.) Which series does the Wraith come from? I don't recall them.

....and finally....Remember these two?

Stargate Atlantis (Spin off from Stargate SG-1)

Shark7 -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 3:35:50 AM)

One other thing I thought of that could act as an equalizer in favor of the Star Wars galaxy are the Heavy Ion Cannons, since they can disable a ship for a time.

The real threat from the Star Trek Galaxy is of the Borg...can you imagine them assimilating a Death Star? Scary stuff.

In the end, they are completely different universes and hard to compare, but it is fun to have the debate, so long as is stays friendly. [:)]

Igard -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 3:50:27 AM)

It's been a weird day for me. This same discussion popped up on the STO forum, here's a link to it :- http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=200643

I just said practically the same thing Shark7 just did. It seems though, that there are technical manuals available that describe the power levels of each weapon. And the results favour..... Star Wars! Oh the shame of it all! [:D]

Here's a quote from one of the posters on that thread and I tend to believe what he says is accurate, though I haven't verified yet.

"Shields can stop most teleports.

Besides something that is powered by a miniature sun is not to be taken lightly.
An Acclamator shield can dissipate 70 trillion GW peak while a galaxy class can only 3311GW peak. Meaning the Acclamator has more than 20 billion times the shield system heat dissipation, give or take a few millions.
For weapons:
1.02GW for the Enterprise-D's entire phaser array however the effect of a phaser is equivalent of 1 to10 TW.
ISD light turbolaser output: 22.500 TW

A micro sun makes all the diference.

There are a lot more things, but i guess this is enough to get the picture.

PS: Granted, the borg may adapt, but there are exceptions for everything."

Sabin Stargem -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 3:55:05 AM)

Be you a Redshirt or an Stormtrooper, the Borg means the same thing...

Actually, I am more worried about the Borg figuring out the secrets to Midichlorians or Gary Mitchell's ascent to godhood, because of the nature of the Borg: they are the whole, collective, and of one mind. That means when they work together with the Force of Others and Q*, they could do some pretty nifty tricks.

*If I recall correctly, the Great Barrier responsible for making Gary Mitchell so strong was something created by the Q Continuum to cordon off a part of the Milky Way. Psychic individuals are therefore 'touched' by the power of Q when exposed to the Great Barrier, amplifying their potential. This most likely indicates that the Q's abilities are Psychic in nature, and possibly applicable to force-capable individuals.

On the topic of Star Wars powerlevels...well, I prefer to ignore exact figures. It isn't any fun when one side purely dominates between the two franchises. This is in part so that we can have more dramatic battles, but also because most of the figures for either side tend to be completely out of touch with what we see on the screen - in that there is way too much power being thrown around.

Instead, I like to say "Let's make both sides about equal, then shift specific aspects of each side to either be stronger or weaker than the other, then figure out how things may work out in an actual conflict."

For example, it is clear that Star Wars is much better than Star Trek when it comes to Androids - they are far more numerous and varied. Data is superior to most of what we see in Star Wars, but he is also unique within the Star Trek universe, so he doesn't account for much value on a scale of empires.

On the other paw, Star Trek beats Star Wars when it comes to Replicators, which can create many materials, including parts, food, chemicals, and so on. Star Trek is likely to have extremely large replication centers which can create the exact kinds of materials needed for many things, but the Empire has to procure raw materials, use huge complexes to refine them, use the refined materials to create parts, and then assemble parts into complete objects. Star Trek has the ability to skip the collection and refinement of materials, in effect saving time in regards to ship repair and construction, among other things.

The Empire is much more stronger militarily, but their economic engine is larger and more complex when compared to the Federation's. As some engineers may tell you, a complex machine is harder to build, maintain, and less reliable. Occam's razor, as it were.

Igard -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 4:01:38 AM)

Interesting. Is that from some of the expanded literature? I must admit I've never read any ST novels, graphic or otherwise. I only usually read Fantasy books for some reason.

Sabin Stargem -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 4:11:54 AM)

The part about the Q being responsible for the Great Barrier* is part of the Expanded Universe for Star Trek, but the elements of Psychic power being related for what effect the Barrier has on individuals is part of the TV series. I assume that the Force is psychic in nature, mostly because...well, psychics are generally related to doing things with their mind, which is what happens with Force users.

*Correction, the "Galactic Barrier". I keep mixing the two up. Should be noted that the Great Barrier was what kept most people away from Shaka-Ree in one of the Star Trek films, which was a planet occupied by a being that masqueraded as religious figures of various races. It apparently wanted a starship to get off the planet. Speculation is that the Galactic Barrier and Great Barrier are similar constructs, but the Great Barrier is likely to the be the weaker of the two, since it isolates only a planet.

The Galactic Barrier prevents travel outside of the Milky Way, much like how in Star Wars travel beyond the Galaxy is impossible because hyperdrive can't operate beyond the Galaxy's edge. This means each Galaxy is isolated, though through different means. The existence of the Galactic Barrier is probably intentional, considering how...specific it is, considering it follows the edge of the Milky Way.

Though the redshirt might actually hit what he is shooting at. If you go by the SW movies, a Stormtrooper couldn't hit the broad side of the Death Star from inside the bloody thing! [X(]

Sabin Stargem -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 4:24:07 AM)

Too true!

VMF 214 -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 1:11:10 PM)

not that I want to take back this thread I started, because I love reading everybody's opinion on SW vs ST but I would like to ask a question: I have glanced at the manual and the galactapedia thing which has very useful info and did the tutorial. So I thought I would keep going with the tutorial and found myself overwhelmed with a WHAT DO I DO NOW!!! feeling. Pirates are attacking a mining station....ships flying all over the place....all kinds of info on the main screen......brain starting to hurt.....so my question is what is the first thing or things I should do....step 1. do ?????? step 2. do ?????? then take it from there.
I am also use to turn based games and this real time thing has thrown me a little. I would like to start fresh so when I create a galaxy my first order of buisness should be what? to get the ball rolling.

thanks,
now back to the SW/ST debate [:D]

Data -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 2:44:26 PM)

create a small one so that you hit all the aspects rather sooner than later
put everything on auto or suggest so that you get a feel of how the AI plays the game for you....gradually put on manual and experiment
take a look on the aar section, there is a particular starting moves aar suited for these questions

mg62 -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 4:12:48 PM)

I just got the game last weekend.  I've looked through the AAR's and also some of the Tutorial's and you tube videos.

I found that starting with all in AI except for exploration & destroyers left me with something to do (and get used to ship/fleet movement control).  Keeping a small fleet of DD's lets me go and defend against the pirates.

As I have gotten into the game I have restarted several times taking more and more off AI control.  At this point I am thinking I should have gotten the expansion at the same time.

Data -> RE: New to the Game (2/8/2011 5:11:32 PM)

it does improve the management side and it makes the game more begginer friendly....as this is much needed, indeed [:)]
