Subs

I-10 misses a DMS at Canton. Her brilliant Captain chose the DMS instead of targeting one of 2 big APs (not xAPs, APs). [:@] At least one of our subs shot at something in this hex after 3 days, though. [8|]

Grayling duds on the AV Kamoi west of the Ellice Islands. This is bad news as it gives CF valuable intel on our "secret" sea plane base plans in the region. Awful luck. We consider pulling back but in the end park Kamoi in Nukufetau and assign a 6 Mavis group to the island. From here we get air search coverage all the way south of Fiji and Pago Pago.

4th Fleet

We need to get supplies to Nukufetau. TB is now fully operational with a group of Zeros, a group of Bettys and an Air HQ. We are continuing to build up the Marshalls, Gilberts and the triangle of fall back bases at Eniewetok, Ponape and Kusaie.

SE Fleet

Ndeni invaded.

14th Army

Zamboanga invaded. An xAK hits a reef during unloading and is at 81 flot damage. Probably a goner.

16th Army

No change.

25th Army

Another sweep of Soerabaja finds more 339s to add to our Zero kill count, casualties 8:0. We have a bunch of pilots about to make ace thanks to the last 2 days. A Nell spots a sub at Soerabaja and claims a hit on a DD. That pilot has a budding post-war career as an umpire in the Japanese baseball leagues.

Merak falls. 18th Division is almost re-grouped at Palembang. Next stop - the Medan/Sabang bases.

15th Army

A renewed air bridge effort with newly arrived transports no longer required by 16th Army brings Akyab back up to 900 supplies in the base with both units fully supplied. Imperial Guards reaches the rail head at Prome and begins the long march to Akyab.

China

The IJA North China Army enters the key hex SE of Tienshui, thus cutting the enemy off from the road net to Chungking. 1 hex NE of Tienshui, 5 IJA LCUs DA a straggler and wreck it again, odds 746:1, casualties 92(16) vs 30(0). Cuttles is in danger of having a 32 LCU army encircled and annihilated - or perhaps just pinned and ignored to prevent re-spawn. Cribtop HQ is getting excited about this front. [&o]

We cross the river 1 hex SE of Pingsiang and SA 3 enemy LCUs. A bit of a gamble but it pays off with a 2:1 odds attack forcing 2 KMT Corps to retreat, casualties 5566(224) vs 1953(9). Reinforcements are on the way.

Still not even a BA at Wuchang by the KMT.

5th Fleet

Paramushiro Jima makes level 2 airfield. We are slowly building the Kuriles and Aleutians.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/27/2011 8:23:45 PM)

April 8, 1942

A very quiet day.

Subs

No contacts.

4th Fleet

No change.

SE Fleet

Ndeni falls to a small SNLF Coy. This action has a specific purpose, namely to serve as a Canary in the Coal Mine. CF seems to be a pretty methodical player and we will dangle this base and unit as a lightning rod. When CF comes for Ndeni Cribtop HQ can assume the first Allied counteroffensive is soon to begin.

Mussau and Kiriwina Islands invaded.

14th Army

We unload at Zamboanga. The damaged xAK sinks but not until after she discharges her troops and supplies.

16th Army

No change.

25th Army

No change.

15th Army

33rd Division (remember them?) finally slogs through the jungle to the hex just east (map) of Kalemyo. 4 enemy LCUs are still present and we will attack tomorrow, then seize Kalemyo. A regiment of 55th Division finally enters an empty Katha and will take it tomorrow.

China

We tried a DA in the hex SE of Pingsiang against the 1 enemy LCU that wasn't forced to retreat yesterday despite having high DIS and low supply in our units from the SA on the 7th. Bad idea as we don't replenish supply and only achieve 1:1 odds, casualties 648(2) vs 313(0). We'll rest up and try again.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/27/2011 8:42:44 PM)

Quick screenshot to show why the hex SE of Tienshui is critical. Note the path of the yellow road between Tienshui and the Chinese heartland goes through this hex.

[image]local://upfiles/29885/F6113E576ACC4D1AAE3D2FFF473D80BD.jpg[/image]

Notes:

1 - IJA North China Army with 3300 AS moves to isolate Tienshui from the SE, SW, NE and E. We will then capture these hex sides and leave the enemy no way out except for the forbidding mountains to the west.

2 & 3 - Nominal enemy defenses at Lanchow and the base just to the south will be swept aside to ensure capture of the Oil at Lanchow by elements of the stack labeled 3.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/29/2011 12:08:13 AM)

April 9, 1942

Subs

No contacts.

4th Fleet

A kamikaze supply ship (tough to be a merchant skipper in our navy, eh?) departs Kwaj for Nukufetau. Between Mavis and Betty at TB and Nukufetau, we've suddenly "turned the lights on" in this neighborhood, but so far see no roaches scurrying for the fridge.

A base force leaves Tokyo Bay bound for Marcus. We are quickly trying to seal up the "air gap" in the northern central Pacific.

SE Fleet

Lots of Naval Guard units depart Truk for Rabaul. From there they will be distributed to various bases in the perimeter. Mussau and Kiriwina Islands fall. Almost finished with DBCL work. Float planes at Munda Point begin ferrying supplies to our tiny Ndeni garrison.

14th Army

DA Zamboanga takes the base and thus completes the conquest of Mindanao with 9:1 odds. Two PI LCUs surrender. Our regiments will rest a few days then load up for Panay.

Extra AA and base force units depart Luzon for Singapore and distribution to more useful locales.

16th Army

A late-arriving tank regiment unloads at Wyndham.

25th Army

Batavia is now fully invested with all hex sides "red." The crack 5th Division and several armored units move out to assist with the conquest of Soerabaja. The equally elite 2nd Division will man the siege lines. Seriously, these two Divisions gained from all the fighting at Singers and are 98 EXP. Yikes.

15th Army

DA 1 hex east (map) of Kalemyo chases 2 enemy base forces and an arty unit into Kalemyo with 11:1 odds, casualties 710(77) vs 19(0). We will march on Kalemyo, but expect the enemy to get away from there as he can use the trail to Imphal. Katha falls and we will move on to Myitkyina. The conquest of Burma should be wrapped up by late April. Cribtop HQ is planning for the defense as we speak. Part of that is lots of fighters. To that end, the last Sentai flying Nates has upgraded to Oscars and moved into Rangoon. We have 3 Oscar Sentai and the Tojo Chutai in theater for now, with more to come in time. Just a few Chutai of Nates in China to go and the Nate will be relegated exclusively to trainer status.

China

The march on Tienshui continues. We are establishing a small rapid reserve in strat mode at Sinyang. Almost have enough PPs to buy out another Division from Manchuria.

5th Fleet

Shimushiri Jima makes level 3 forts and will build up a level 2 airfield. In the first sign of any enemy activity in NOPAC, Umnak Island is reported to make a level 1 airfield. We'll keep an eye on this...

Other

Hordes of tankers arrive at a secret location and will soon be hauling oil and fuel around the Empire.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/30/2011 6:49:52 PM)

April 10, 1942

Subs

I-17 misses a DD in what appears to be an ASW hunter group. Perhaps I'll re-title this AAR "The Battle of the Toothless Sub Fleets."

4th Fleet

We begin unloading a special base force with some nasty CD guns at Kusaie as the defensive plan continues to take shape.

SE Fleet

No change.

14th Army

No change.

16th Army

No change.

25th Army

Two regiments of 56th Division enter Tjilatjap to fix 4 enemy LCUs and prevent their escape by rail. A sweep of Soerabaja achieves 4:1 kills, but this breaks our Zeros' unbeaten record in this air battle. A follow on attack against the airfield by Nells achieves little thanks to bad weather.

Cribtop HQ re-shuffles the fleet at Singapore a bit, creating Tanaka Force out of BBs Kongo and Haruna, 3 CAs, 1 CL and 9 DDs. This fast reaction squadron will shadow MKB to provide extra punch in whatever region the carriers are sailing. This will also keep all the Kongos together in case MKB needs to replace a damaged or sunk SBD magnet. Admiral Tanaka is still currently in command of the South Seas Fleet, but will transfer to command this squadron soon.

15th Army

Rangoon makes level 7 airfield. Recon in Assam shows that the enemy's air force is staying well out of range for now. Note that we have yet to see Cuttlefish bring out his 4Es or fighters to play in this game. Saving up for the counterattack, probably.

China

DA in the hex SE of Pingsiang retreats the enemy corps still present with 21:1 odds, casualties 1272(142) vs 214(4). Tomorrow we will further isolate the enemy's army at Tienshui.

jrcar -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/30/2011 11:18:52 PM)

Looks like the enemy in Assam will get nasty in the air if they are husbanding their resources...

Anything you can do to encorage battle?

Feint at Ceylon?

Are you LRCAPing chinese bases over the border to kill transport aircraft?

Cheers

Rob

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/30/2011 11:36:49 PM)

Definitely agree we need to force the action. It was great to get the AVG but that's not enough. Currently we are reconning, looking for enemy bases. So far only Ledo and Calcutta are built and have a/c present. Phase 2, currently awaiting a few more base forces near Mandalay, is an IJAAF offensive against these bases. We are also shifting Glen boats to the Bay of Bengal to evaluate the feasibility and value of a raid by MKB against Ceylon, Madras, Trincomalee, even Calcutta.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (8/31/2011 9:51:30 PM)

April 11, 1942

The Mother of all Quiet Days, but the promise of action tomorrow!

Subs

Our new sub patrols in SOPAC may have hit pay dirt. Three I-boats lurking near Samoa find themselves close by a large enemy convoy reported to contain 2 CVEs and 3 TKs. Not sure about the accuracy of the reporting, but it could be a heavily escorted fuel convoy bound for Fiji or the enemy fleet AOs. Either way we will hope for an intercept tomorrow. A Jake reports a hit on a USN sub near Singapore.

4th Fleet, SE Fleet, 14th Army

No change.

16th Army

21st and 38th Divisions finally slog into Katherine. Now the Darwin campaign can begin in earnest. Elsewhere, an armored regt enters and will take a vacant Derby.

25th Army

Makassar makes level 4 airfield. Still marching on Tjilatjap in Java.

15th Army

No change.

China

In the north, our army now occupies both the hex SW of Tienshui and the mountain hex blocking the trail to Ankang. The enemy LoC is cut. We will try to take this army out of play, but probably not by outright destruction, which would teleport 1/3 of it to Chungking. The operational goal is to force a retreat into the mountains, inflicting horrible losses and removing the stack's offensive potential, then leave it to rot, perhaps with a few PoW guards from the IJA.

In the south, we spot a 5 LCU army trying to sneak along a trail toward Nanchang. This will force our Pingsiang army to fall back a bit, but reinforcements are arriving in the central front and we have hatched a clever plan. As long as CF can't find a big army to drive on the Amoy region we should be ok here until the commencement of Operation Red Dragon.

5th Fleet

Shikuka makes level 2 airfield.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/1/2011 9:24:25 PM)

April 12, 1942

Subs

Four I-boats swoop in a co-ordinated wolfpack swarm against the enemy's "CVE/TK" convoy near Pago Pago and... nada. Ugh. We'll assume they are heading for Suva and we somehow missed them and act accordingly. I even had a first person narrative all dreamed up for "the night of the long knives" I had hoped to see here. [:-]

SC escorts of a 1250 TK convoy chase off KXV near Singapore. We are beginning to run regular Oil convoys and in fact the first regular shipment to Japan should land within the week.

4th Fleet

No change.

SE Fleet

Tabar Island invaded. We forgot about ordering this invasion and had a moment of panic during the replay thinking it might be Cuttlefish somehow sneaking up to the gates of Rabaul. [:D]

14th Army

Our 2 regiments at Zamboanga load for the central PI bases still in enemy hands.

16th Army

Derby falls and we kill an AM in port. BA Katherine shows only four base forces present, raw AS 927:54. DA tomorrow.

25th Army

Sweep and airfield attack at Soerabaja kills the last 339 on CAP and destroys at least one enemy bomber on the ground.

Semarang falls as our forces move on Soerabaja.

15th Army

Glen recon of Ceylon shows only 3 LCUs, no ships or planes. However, DL is low so we will go again tomorrow to make sure. This news would pretty much scrub the idea of a Ceylon raid by MKB, but CF has to be hiding his British ships somewhere...

China

The enemy is moving from all sides to discourage continued offensives by the IJA in the north. First, a few ChiCom units are probing down the road toward Sian from their isolated positions in the east. We can block this with a brigade in rough terrain for now. Second, the 5 enemy LCUs near Nanchang, which we bombed and reconned today, are moving east. This force should be stopped by available local forces as well. Finally, 3 more LCUs are photographed by recon at Kienko, with at least 1 marching toward Tienshui.

BA at Kungchang shows a small corps and a base force present, raw AS 762:116. DA tomorrow.

5th Fleet

Amchitka Island makes level 3 forts and will now work on a small airfield.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/3/2011 10:24:57 PM)

April 13, 1942

A day with lots of lovely Banzais.

Subs

We continue to try to hunt the enemy TK convoy in SOPAC and a Glen spots them moving West just past Vava'u. We will pursue and attempt intercepts with about 5 subs, but they may have slipped past us. Cribtop HQ has spent some time thinking about sub ops and is going to shift to parking off key bases that the enemy is known to be building up. Boring but hopefully effective.

4th Fleet

Our CVE Raiders are approaching Kwaj to top off before another foray. Marcus Island now sports a base force as the perimeter continues to build.

SE Fleet

Buka is invaded while Tabar Island falls.

14th Army

We need to get a garrison force to Zamboanga before continuing the central PI campaign. Is there a hotkey that shows garrison requirements?

16th Army

DA Katherine takes the base despite low supply levels in the attackers with 3:1 odds and level 1 forts. 4 base forces retreat, casualties 899(146) vs 146(2). On to Darwin!

Kendari makes level 4 port.

25th Army

Soerakarta occupied by rowboat portage units [:D]. This is odd and serves to cut the rail line and isolate 4 Dutch LCUs from Soerabaja.

DA Tjilatjap takes the base with 9:1 odds. 3 LCUs are retreated and the static CD unit surrenders with casualties 1797(258) vs 359(2). Soerabaja is next on the menu.

15th Army

No change.

China

DA Kungchang takes the base with 7:1 odds, casualties 1490(77) vs 37(1) as 2 LCUs retreat. Lanchow's oil is almost in our grasp. In addition, we are a day or two from accumulating sufficient PPs to buy out another Kwantung Army division for use in China.

Other

Loads of Naval Guards, a few base forces and an Air HQ arrive and will be deployed shortly.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/4/2011 3:33:12 AM)

April 14, 1942

Subs

We decided to take one regiment from Zamboanga to continue the central PI campaign. S-36 shoots at but fortunately misses a troopship in this convoy. KXVIII torpedoes but does not sink a TK in the Makassar Strait. We will need more ASW patrols, both air and naval, in this region before our new TK convoys are safe.

4th Fleet

No Change.

SE Fleet

Buka falls.

14th Army

San Jose invaded.

16th Army

No change.

25th Army

We rail in a TK regiment to recently occupied Soerakarta in order to seal the 4 Dutch LCUs formerly from Tjilatjap in the bag. Oscars sweep Madioen but there is no CAP. An invasion TF is cooling its heels at Palembang awaiting the arrival of 18th Division. Then we will invade western Sumatra (true).

15th Army

We are close to fully manning bases in central Burma and have identified a concentration of enemy fighters and transport planes at Myitkyina (they just flew in as they weren't there about 3 days ago). We hope to unleash the IJAAF on these units, where are probably flying supply over the Hump.

Akyab is just about fixed up from enemy bombardments and will then make level 2 forts. Supply situation is now excellent here.

China

Marching on Lanchow and Tienshui. We are bombing the cut off forces at Tienshui to burn supplies, add DIS and prevent fort construction.

Other

More air groups and LCUs arrive as reinforcements.

Mike Solli -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/4/2011 5:25:53 PM)

Hey Cribtop, I just found this (and Cuttlefish's) AAR. What a wonderful time I'm going to have catching up! [:D]

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/4/2011 6:59:50 PM)

Great to have you back on the boards, Mike. You're one of two consultants that ensured my economy hasn't crashed yet.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/5/2011 8:25:37 AM)

April 15, 1942

ALERT! Enemy troops discovered at Tennant Creek!

Subs

Two of our subs miss a convoy inbound for Pearl Harbor despite being in ideal position. The suck continues. [8|] I-25, 1 hex NE of Pearl launches a frustration attack on DD Walkes, one of the local ASW DDs. This of course misses.

4th Fleet

Our CVE Raiders are moving into position between Johnston and the Line Islands. We hope the big convoy that just arrived at Pearl from the NW means a big convoy departing Oahu from the SW soon. If so, we may hit pay dirt.

A kamikaze xAK unloads supplies at Nukufetau to support our seaplane base there.

Roi Namur makes level 4 forts.

SE Fleet

At Tokyo, numerous Naval Guard units load up for the front.

Lihir invaded.

Woodlark Island's seaplane base is supplied from Rabaul.

14th Army

The Vals recently positioned at Manila catch and sink an xAKL trying to sneak in vital supplies. Glad we finally remembered to do this. Cribtop HQ frets about how many other kamikaze supply ships reached Bataan in previous months.

DA San Jose on Panay Island takes the base with 61:1 odds, casualties 20(2) vs nil.

16th Army

We had a tank regiment approaching Tennant Creek in NW Oz with hopes of eventually occupying the rail head at Alice Springs. No joy! Instead we find ourselves adjacent to 8 enemy LCUs at Tennant and begin to beat a hasty retreat to Daly Waters. A movement arrow indicates the enemy is attempting to pursue. Not great news, but it shows Cuttlefish is paying attention to his defenses in Australia. We should outrun the enemy with a 30 mile head start, but what is the composition of the enemy force? What happens if/when they reach Daly Waters? We believe Darwin will be ours by then, and supply should be tough for the Aussies over the desert, but this is a discomforting development.

Another armored regiment will soon arrive in Broome, which is mercifully defended by only 1 LCU.

25th Army

We are pushing toward Soerabaja and moving to ensure that the enemy units cut off near Tjilatjap are destroyed. Our small tankers are beginning to drop Oil at Singapore, but it appears the black gold is being sucked to Bangkok. We want it to stay at Singers for eventual transport to the Home Islands.

18th Division begins to load at Palembang for the Western Sumatra Op.

15th Army

3rd Air Division HQ finally marches into Moulmein and boards trains for Rangoon. This will release several base forces and allow an air offensive out of Mandalay.

China

We accumulate enough PPs to buy out a crack 80 EXP division from Kwantung Army. The unit in question was already in strat mode and heads for the border tomorrow.

ny59giants -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/5/2011 1:36:20 PM)

My game as Allies is at May 28th and a Japanese Tank Regiment just arrived. I told him this base is in "No Man's Land." Keeping troops there usually requires the use of transports to supply them. If he tries to pursue you, bomb his troops and cause him to use up his supplies. Then, maybe turn around and attack if your troops are supplied.

Singapore and Oil - If you are using a Beta Patch, then turn Stockpile "ON" for Oil. Bangkok will get enough from Burma.

OT - Sorry to hear you missed all that much needed rain as it hit New Orleans and now is headed for me in Tenn. The NE corner will get about 2" worth.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/7/2011 6:41:12 PM)

April 16, 1942

A rare bad day in China.

Subs

A DD escorting tankers near Gebe chases off K XIII.

4th Fleet

The Raiders are away on their second hunt.

SE Fleet

Green Island is invaded and falls to SA. Lihir falls. Lots of Naval Guards are unloaded at Rabaul for distribution to the perimeter.

14th Army

No change.

16th Army

The enemy continues to chase our tank regiment north. We are preparing to bomb them once they get in range. It will be interesting to see whether Cuttles pushes a true counterattack here or is merely running us back to Daly Waters.

25th Army

Djokjakara falls. 10 Falcons are destroyed on the ground. It's really a mystery why CF lets his planes in the DEI get caught like this. Perhaps he is trying to deny my fighters experience gains?

15th Army

Akyab, unmolested for weeks, makes level 2 forts.

China

In an attempt to close off a hex side at Tienshui, 110th Division entered the hex today across a river. We thought this would be ok as we have more AS in the hex than the KMT (certainly more than 1/3rd of their AS). Apparently this only counts if you enter the same hex side. Ugh. The accidental shock attack trashes the division. 20% casualties and only 4 squads left undisabled. A painful lesson and the division will have to refit at Sian.

We learn through this misadventure that the enemy has quickly piled up level 3 forts. Given that, the terrain and the current balance of AS, we cannot take the base until it starves. Cribtop HQ orders that the surrounding hexes be garrisoned to prevent relief and the starving process begins. This is ok as pushing on while leaving the 32 LCUs in our rear would only net us stalemate at Kienko. CF still has a 41 LCU reserve at Chungking. Not all of these are combat units, but enough are that we feel unprepared to face them until big reinforcements arrive.

DA 1 hex SE of Lanchow pushes back the former Kungchang garrison, odds 14:1, casualties 1272(44) vs 209(2). Lanchow's oil and industry will fall soon.

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/7/2011 7:01:26 PM)

April 17,1942

Subs

Just for fun we try a midget sub attack on Canton Island. The midget founders trying to launch from the mothership. We at least expected to reach the harbor before dying. [8|]

4th Fleet

Our seaplane base at Nukufetau is now fully supplied.

SE Fleet

No change.

14th Army

Almost to Iloilo on Panay.

16th Army

A bizarre incident. We shamefully allowed DD Yukaze to run out of gas while escorting a convoy of 1250 TKs in the Moluccas. In desperation, we ordered the big C1 class sub I-20, which just happened to be transiting the area, to move to Yukaze's rescue. We didn't expect a sub to be able to refuel a DD but it worked! Cool. This will be treated as an experiment and not repeated unless I find evidence it was historically possible. Overuse of this could be gamey, IMHO. Cute move though.

25th Army

Marching on Soerabaja. 18th Division has finished loading for western Sumatra. One day to load supplies and we sortie.

15th Army

Chittagong is slowly becoming an enemy forward base. Our last recon showed 1 LCU, but today we snap photos of multiple ships in harbor and 5 LCUs, along with fighters and auxiliary aircraft at the runway. We will definitely be visiting this port with aircraft and perhaps even Tanaka Force shortly.

China

The enemy probe near Wuchang, countered by our former Pingsiang force, is compelled to withdraw in the face of superior numbers. We want to keep lots of KMT LCUs pinned in the central front by minimal IJA forces. This will put more enemy units in danger once Red Dragon commences.

DA in the far north against an isolated HQ unit with 1 AS gets an awful die roll and nets only 1:1 odds, casualties nil/nil. We'll try again tomorrow.

Other

Cribtop Intel reports BB Royal Sovereign is still afloat. This is no surprise. We hope she is sheltering at Colombo as SigInt today shows an anchor sign there. As soon as western Sumatra is ours and MKB can sneak in undetected we may pay Ceylon a visit. For now, Cribtop HQ is content that CF probably has no clear idea as to the whereabouts of our CVs.

ny59giants -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/7/2011 8:46:21 PM)

Chittagong - I know in Scenario 2, the Allies get 3 mobile CD units with 6" CD guns. I like at least one to go to Chittagong. Add in the static BF with its CD guns and this base can hit back. [:-] Just don't want you to set range at under 10k and get some holes in your ships. [:D]

IJAAF - Home Island units are training in Tokyo. In Manchukuo, all air groups (save one Sally group we bought out to augment 5th Air Division) are training in four rear bases, divided by group type. We have two fighter bases, one recon base and one bomber base for training. Not much downgrading is possible from the Nate, but we will slowly downgrade bombers to Ida, Sonia and other trash. The four Manchukuo IJAAF transport groups were bought out and sent to the DEI to help with some air assaults planned in that AO.

Hey Cribtop, I'm still way behind reading this AAR (13 Dec 41), but I've had really good luck with Manchuoko bombers (Sallys and Lilys) by basing them in a far western Manchurian city right on the border of China (can't remember the name) and having them bomb Chinese troops. Their experience rose very quickly. Just a thought....

Cribtop -> RE: Wait, I can't read Cuttlefish's new AAR? - Cribtop (J) vs CF (A) (9/7/2011 9:10:49 PM)

Good idea, Mike! I've been thinking of how to raise the EXP of trained pilots. Could even escort the bombers to raise fighter pilot EXP. Have to consider how this impacts on our house rules, though. Might buy out a few air groups and use them in that role as CF could argue bombing from Manchukuo without paying PPs violates the spirit of our rules.

Agreed. I would buy them out before use in China .... and I've used them the way Mike describes and it works quite well. EXP jumps quite nicely.

Consider this a plan, then, gents. Will really help in late war to have experienced - not just trained - pilots.

The entire ChiCom army in the north is basically cut off and probably starved already. Ripe targets for bombing and a good way to keep them neutralized.

Lots of less modern DDs will complete upgrades tomorrow. Many will be allotted to tanker convoys as Cribtop HQ has determined that it is time to start hauling oil back to the Home Islands in bulk now.

Cribtop, can you (at your convenience) give some details here? Upgrades to APDs? A lot of folks talk about converting certain classes to APDs. I'm still not convinced that's the best solution. Just curious on your take.

Thanks,

Mike

Can't remember the class, but basically one convoy of 3 small xAKs plus escort for Ocean and two such convoys for Nauru. They barely fit but can build up about 65K resources in Truk by the time the approx once per month supply or reinforcement convoy stops in - no dedicated convoy to Japan as I'm sure it's not worth that. Just enough of a old Railroad Tycoon 2 player that I hate to see empty hauls. [:D] I'll check tonight on exactly what ships are involved.

Loved Railroad Tycoon 2 so I can totally relate to your point about an empty haul. However, do you think the fuel expenditure getting those resources from Ocean and Nauru is worth it? I've only got two hubs set up and practically ignore most of the resource producing bases on the map other than for local consumption, as I don't have many issues keeping the Home Islands resourced up from closer sources. Think how many more miles KB could patrol [;)].

Here's my take on it: Eventually, Japan will be isolated. Honshu uses a huge amount of resources each month. The bigger the surplus, the longer the factories can produce. Yeah, it uses precious fuel. I think it's worth it. By the time Japan is isolated, there probably isn't much of a fleet left. Keeping the HI going with whatever fuel is remaining will keep the economy from collapsing just that much longer. I use some small xAK(L)s for both Ocean and Nauru. Anything headed to Truk from either Japan or Babelwhatsit go back loaded with resources. The resources either directly or indirectly work their way back to Japan.

PS It's always interesting and often surprising what gets readers interested enough to post and what does not. I expected a lot of comments about the destruction of the AVG and the fall of Sian, and instead we get involved in a discussion of hauling bird poop out of Ocean Island. [:D]

What could be more important than that?! [:D]

I've been thinking of how to raise the EXP of trained pilots. Could even escort the bombers to raise fighter pilot EXP.

Training fighters I just put them on 100 sweep train at 100ft, 0 distance. Brings up straffing, experience, defense, and some air skills depending it seems on the experience of the best ace in the group.

I train the crap out of pilots in 42 as Japan, trying to get a good group for 43 ready for the major battles (and losses). Usually to 50-60 EXP, 70 AIR, 50-60 straffing, 60-70 defense.

Once I get them there, the Oscars 1c seems able to handle P-40s easily, destroy P-39s and anything Chinese, and get positive results against most Hurricane groups.

I didn't in any way mean to diminish your glorious and imperious victory of destroying AVG on the ground. Actually I would rate that as equivalent to sinking an allied CV. Banzai!

I have to agree with Insano here. Just think of how many IJAAF pilots that will save!

Kendari hits level 7 airfield. Cribtop doctrine calls for major bases to expand to level 7 (with a few level 9s at REALLY big bases) in order to allow for air group upgrades "in the field." This is one such base.

Geez, I never thought of that! My philosophy (until now) was to not increase above level 4. Make the Allied player build when he took a base from me. Now I need to figure out which to increase to level 7!

Mike or C-top , do you guys monitor your merchant shipyards and cycle some  off when X amount of points are accumilated and/or running in consistant excess?

Thanks!

Other

Covered by TBs on picket duty and our recently activated sea plane patrols near Marcus, and directly escorted by a pack of DDs, two large tanker TFs leave the Home Islands. Together with TKs already in the SRA, these ships will begin hauling Oil back to Japan and distributing fuel to forward hubs like Truk.

I hope you're not taking fuel from Japan....
