David Lehmann -> pbem issue (9/19/2002 5:48:41 PM)

Hello,

I already posted this topic in the tech forum but I will more likely get a response in this one ...
We encounter serious problems when using the pbem mode of the game (version 7.1). The fact is that the retreat/reinforcment hexes are very often, almost always, on the bad side i.e. the troops retreat towards the ennemy ... which you will probably agree with me is not an easy way ton win a war.
The maps are self made maps, they are totally fine in the editor, in solitaire play and by simulating an opponent on the same computer. When attempting to play by e-mail, once the files have been sent, the flags are on the wrong side in 90% of the cases.
Can someone explain that and above all is someone able to resolve this issue ? Heeeeeelp !

David

Learned that the hard way...so I can feel your pain :D

The problem is: If you set up a PBEM game in the Battle menue, the retreat hexes will be set by the computer according to a hardcoded set up given for that time and nations involved, not matter where they are placed on your premade map.

Example:
US against Germany in '44 will be always US at the left and Germany to the right, even if the nations in the Battle menue are set to GER - US.

If you want to change the sides for the retreat hexes, you can just do that, by going into the editor, load your map and hit the button with the blue and green arrow. This toggles either the "historical setup" like US-GER in '44 or makes it the opposite like GER-US in '44.
So if you have a designed map and want to have Germany on the left side in '44, you have to make sure your map is in the "non-historical" mode (you can identify that by the nation, that is in the editor menue to the left - default is Germany - if the text popping up on the button says "germany is on the left side", it's the "historical" setting).

If you should have downloaded the H2H package at theDirty Dozen
you'll have 12 prepared maps for PBEM in there. The names of these maps alos give the date and nations involved, because of the reason the retreat hexes could get mixed up otherwise...they're also playable with 7.1.

hope that helps...just play around with it a bit and you'll get used to it...

I have run into this issue my self. I have not been able to figure out how to fix it yet. I would like to know also?

Jack posted about this problem a couple weeks ago: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25464

I'm not sure if he found any further insight into it, and he's currently unavailable (military service).

Hello panzer Leo,

I don't manage to have that thing working, something seems to be set randomly too ....
I play in july 1944 :

1..............................
in the editor : german left (historical, because the editor is in german-russian mode)

- in the battle screen ger-US : the germans are on the left and the retreat hexes too
- in the battle screen US-ger : the germans are on the right but never the retreat hex

2..............................
in the editor : german right (not historical, because the editor is in german-russian mode)

- in the battle screen ger-US : the germans are on the right but never the retreat hex
- in the battle screen US-ger : the germans are on the left and the retreat hexes too

something is perhaps logical but I am lost ...
we want to play pbem with US/UK/CAN/FR against GER ... but sometimes GER have to be on the right, sometimes to be on the left, and alternatively they have to be first or second player if they are defender or attacker ...

We would like to be sure of our deploys but we do not find the mean to control them ... Did I understand something wrong ?
It seems quite impossible to me ...

Ooops...I also made a little mistake...I'm just preparing a new PBEM battle and encounter exactly this problem...

The retreat hex is always hardcoded, as it seems - you cannot change the side it appears...

That means, you cannot have Germany on the left side against Western Allies in '44, no matter what you do (what I described above is just the setup side you can change, not the retreat hex).

I'm not 100% sure, but:

Check out a battle in the Battle menue with the two nations you want to play. Go as far as the deploy and see what side each nation has to do the setup. This setup will always be the same for these two nations in that year, even on a custom map...I couldn't find an easy way to change that...

So it does not matter if you have GER-US or US-GER, the retreat hex for Germany will always be on the right side in '44 (and for other years and nations, you have to find out)...sad, but seems to be true...

Now I know, why I screwed up the last PBEM setting I made :D

David Lehmann -> (9/20/2002 12:41:36 AM)

no ... on some maps I had alternatively germans in 1944 on the right or on the left with their retreat hexes ... damned editor ... something is random or I don't know ...

In the Battle menue ? ...or in the editor ? In the editor you can set up your scenario as you want, but it's not secure PBEM then...I never had Germans against US in the Battle menue set up other then Germans on the right side on the map...

David Lehmann -> (9/20/2002 1:55:40 AM)

yes I managed to play germans against US in july 1944 and they are deployed on the left part of the map.
