fiva55 -> End of turn 9 overview (4/19/2011 6:15:19 PM)

This turn, I set the entire Bryansk Front to static. German defences over there are
generally held by regiments anyway. He seems to concentrating his divisions for a push
in the Center. Probed randomly all along the front and managed to rout a panzer division.

fiva55 -> Turn 10: The fall of Voronezh (4/19/2011 6:48:40 PM)

Not all is going well. Despite the odds, the Germans managed to capture Voronezh.
I couldn't care less, if it not for the fact that the city counts towards our VPs.

Admittedly, it was a mistake of me not to reinforce the city, I thought that those
German divisions were going to reinforce the main offensive in the center. Lesson
learned I guess.

C'est la vie.

fiva55 -> Turn 11: Begin of turn overview (4/20/2011 5:32:30 PM)

Thoughts:
I would have liked to build up my forces a bit more, but my opponent
has started to shorten his lines. Any delays would just give him time
to fortify, so I will start go on the offensive this turn.

fiva55 -> Turn 11: End of turn overview (4/20/2011 5:50:04 PM)

Thoughts:
Unless I make a major mistake the coming turns, I think I should at
least be able to achieve a minor victory even if I don't go on the
offensive. There is no fun in just defending the entire game though,
so I will try to take back 2 Victory Locations.

The chances are slim that I will actually achieve my objectives, but at
least I will have some fun trying.

fiva55 -> RE: Turn 12: Begin of turn overview (4/20/2011 10:26:23 PM)

Thoughts:
My opponents seems to have spread his armour evenly, in order to position them
against my three spearheads. Because of that, 5th Tank army in the south
isn't strong enough to achieve it's objective (Voshilovgrad), but I will keep
pushing from that direction to keep his panzers there.

The remaining 2 spearheads will just focus on linking up and capturing the northern
victory location. (Boguchar)

fiva55 -> Turn 13: End of turn overview (4/20/2011 10:34:51 PM)

Thoughts:
Progress is slow but steady. For every 2 hexes that I advance, I'm sure that Jajusha
will at least recapture one. The key is is just to advance more then 1 hex [:D].

The offensive in the North Caucasus sector is also going well, against my expectations.
The key seems to be focusing on the Romanian divisions. I must remind myself to remove
them from my front lines in our 42 GC game.

I also detected 4 panzer divisions in the North Caucasus sector. Not sure what they
are doing there, for I'm pretty sure that they won't be able to break out and capture some
VPs in that region.

fiva55 -> Turn 13: Begin of turn overview (4/20/2011 10:50:00 PM)

Thoughts:
As predicted my opponent counter attacked and regained most of
his lost territory. Meanwhile, 5th Tank army is doing its job,
attracting the bulk of the German armor.

In the North Caucasus sector, my opponents has wisely relocated his armour.
I believe there are somewhere around Stalino at the moment, since thats
where one of my partisans spotted them.

It also seems that Jajusha has also given up on his Crimea offensive, and has
started to retreat back to the peninsula, with some Romanian divisions as rear
guard.

fiva55 -> Turn 13: End of turn overview (4/20/2011 10:56:25 PM)

Thoughts:
This is what I hoped for. Although my opponent managed to regained most of his lost ground
by counter attacking, he left his division in hexes within deliberate attack range and without
fortifications. Because of that, I made good progress with my northern 2 spearheads.

Meanwhile, I imagine my opponent will be unpleasantly surprised when he checks the Crimea....

It's not often that I play as the Soviets, so I will just enjoy

I really need to watch out for this during my 42 GC campaign.

fiva55 -> Turn 14: Begin of turn overview (4/21/2011 3:38:09 PM)

Thoughts:
With the 1.04 beta having arrived today, we have decided to updated our game.
Both of us have agreed to finish our current match before continuing our GC.

It seems Jajusha had some kinda update bug, causing his RR capacity to disappear.
Though it seems to be fixed by turn 15.

Anyway, the lack of RR capacity meant that he concentrated his forces in the center.
He is now able to create a double line defence, making progress for me much harder.

Thoughts:
Several relatively high CV divisions prevent me to make a breakthrough in the center.
Those 9 divisions of last turn are encircled again, but I have no doubt that they will
be able to break out. But with mud coming soon, I have high hopes that I will be able
to at least isolate 3 of those divisions and force them to surrender.

fiva55 -> Turn 14: Seriously, guard your ports (4/21/2011 3:47:14 PM)

Thoughts:
Crimea: the Romanians have "volunteered" to delay the Soviet advance as long as possible.
With level 2 forts and and the terrain favouring the defenders, it is not a bad plan.
Merely by staying there, they tie up 3 Soviet armies.

That is, if they had properly guarded their ports......

fiva55 -> Turn 16-19: Mud (4/21/2011 11:35:35 PM)

Thoughts:
Not much has happened. In the center I managed to force the previously isolated
6 infantry division and 1 panzer division to surrender. In the Crimea sector,
I abandoned my amphibious operation. It seems like the ports didn't support the
forces needed to establish a lasting bridgehead.

Jajusha -> RE: Turn 14: Seriously, guard your ports (4/21/2011 11:42:16 PM)

Well, we nearly finished the game (turn 19 currently). Looking at the full AAR now, and fivas disposition of troops, these are my thoughts:

- Offensive operations in the Crimea had a decent margin of success at start, and was making good progress, but before turn 8 all but 2 german divisions there are withdrawn by OKH, and your left with Romanians and arriving soviet reserve armies. I should have fallen back immediately, holding the Crimea isthmus, the ports, and sending all excess troops to partisan and reserve duty. Mistake on my part, and it cost me alot of Romanians with that very impressive disembark.
- 1 turn before Fiva disembarked, i railed out a panzer corp, as my idea was to lure him to unfortified terrain, then try a last dash to the VP locations. Fortunately, i gave up on the idea after seeing new soviet troops arriving to form a second and third defensive line.
- Stalingrad is a very, very distant target. I should have focused on capturing and holding Rostov, Varonezh, Boguchar and Varoshilograv as soon as possible and fortified my position.
- Spreading out too thin was my main problem. I had to divide my divisions into regiments in the north and near Rostov to be able to support the stalingrad dash. Fiva then exploited this in the final turns to divert attention of my armour.

And seriously, let this be a warning, guard your ports!

fiva55 -> Turn 20: The last turn (4/22/2011 12:59:07 AM)

Turn 20 ended with mud, kinda anticlimactic.

fiva55 -> Final excerpt from the war diary of Konstantin Rokossov (4/22/2011 2:13:09 PM)

    Final excerpt from war diary of Konstantin Rokossov

    It has been a rough few months for my troops, but the tide has finally
    been turned. We have been pressuring the Germans all along the front,
    inflicting heavy casualties on the German invaders.

    A month ago, Stavka had authorized a strategic operation to throw back
    the Germans and end the threat to Stalingrad. Codenamed Operation Uranus,
    the operation has progressed well so far, throwing the Germans back 30
    miles all along the front.

    Though the Germans desperately pulled back to shorten their lines, not
    all of their troops managed to fall back in good order. During the course
    of the operation, 7 German divisions and 1 panzer division were isolated
    and forced to surrender.

    4th Tank Army, under my command, has played an instrumental role in the
    destruction of these German divisions, and it is rumoured that we will be
    award Guard status in recognition of our performance during the operation.

    With strong defenses and large reserves behind our frontlines, I feel
    confident that the threat to Stalingrad has finally ended.

    At the moment of writing, we are still in the mud season. Soon however,
    we will enter the winter season. Though I'm still not priviliged enough
    to know the full plan of the coming winter offensive, I have no doubt
    that some big things are planned.

    My men are rested and and well trained. No matter what will be asked of us,
    we will perform our duty well. We are all eager for revenge, and soon,
    we will throw back the Germans from our Motherland and take the fight to
    their cities........

    [Signed]
    General-Leytenant Rokossovsky
    Dated 11/13/1942

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final thoughts:
It has been a fun game with a good and reliable opponent. Except for the final
mud turns, there has never been a dull moment, and my opponent kept making me
guessing where he would attack.

I still prefer playing Germans, mainly because it allows me to make good looking
encirclements, but steam rolling an opponent with endless numbers has it's own
merits [:D].

Hope you all enjoyed reading this AAR. I will take a small break from playing WITE,
but will start updating my 42 GC AAR soon. Also, I have been invited to take over
a spot in the German team of the Za Rodinu PBEM team game, so I will try to keep the
AAR for the axis side of that game updated too.

Have a good weekend all,
fiva55

I don't think I'm particularly good at this game, but thanks for the compliments.

Winning this scenario as the Soviets is mainly a matter of surviving the first few
turns. After that, the weight of numbers on the Soviet side, combined with the fact
that several of Germany's panzer divisions will be withdrawn from turn 7 onwards,
makes the game a lot easier for the Soviets.

As for us cranking out the turns so fast, it's just that me and Jajusha are some well
matched opponents. We are in the same timezone, and with me working at odd hours and
Jajusha having enough free times recently, it is easy to do several turns each days.
Completing a turn usually took less then half an hour, once I had every sorted out on
my side.

I'm pretty sure that we will try another smaller scenario in the future, perhaps even
this scenario again but with the sides reversed. If so, I will try to write a short
AAR of it, provided there is enough interest.
