Nor Galactic Civilizations II (another prime example of multiple victory conditions, although I positively hate that game and don't understand how people can possibly be impressed by it).

because it's the 2nd best 4x space empire game out there and has the best ai of them all to prove it. (X3:Terran Conflict being #1). If you don't understand why it's so popular then I don't think you have played it very long or much. How you can not be impressed by a superior AI to all the others shows it.

What a surprise to have your input here. And look, the totally unexpected X3 reference. One wonders when you get the time to update on forums for games that you don't like [:D]

J HG T -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (4/30/2011 8:49:55 AM)

Also, diablo1, for the Xth time: X3 is not 4X game.

Wiki about X series

Read the very first line in the Wiki and get a grip of yourself man.

diablo1 -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (4/30/2011 12:30:15 PM)

You don't determine what a 4x game is to me bud. If you live by what stupid wiki's say that can be changed on a daily basis by anyone then you surely have issues of what is the truth. Wiki's are just internet toys for children to play with. Encyclopedia's on the other hand are not.

So? Ask anybody, other than yourself of course, is the X3 (or X series in general) a 4X game and I'll bet that easily over 95% says it is not. By your logic Freelancer, EVE online, Elites and Space Rangers could all be considered 4Xs, which they clearly are not.
Anyway, I'll read only one more of your posts, and if that doesn't make any damn sense I'll just green-button you moi friend.

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (4/30/2011 12:52:32 PM)

J only provided a link for you to read, none of us expect you to understand 4x or the game you so praise and imagine it's 4x.
I've played X3 and that wiki page is correct, it is a simulator not 4x.
I'm sure that there are rpg or adventure forums outhere where you claim X3 is the best rpg and adventure game as well [:)].
Arcade also? Why not.

12 demerits on your StarFleet record Data for admitting you played X3!
SHAME ON YOU! [:-]

J HG T -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/1/2011 10:27:59 AM)

Easy there! X3 ain't the best space game around but it sure ain't the worst either. It just takes certain type of person to enjoy it. Clearly, I am not that type of person.

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/1/2011 11:00:39 AM)

Aye, we approve. I tried it because I've read somewhere the X series tries to continue the spirit of Elite...and also it promised to be the next SR2 (SR3 so to speak).
I'll neither bash it or praise it, it's a solid game but it's not for me either. Actually, diablo does it a great deal of harm by continuously praising it while bashing DW.

adecoy95 -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/1/2011 8:15:28 PM)

x3 is barely a game, let alone a 4x game xD

ASHBERY76 -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/1/2011 11:39:39 PM)

The X series is a great cure for insomnia.

Webbco -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/2/2011 1:20:34 PM)

I've just downloaded X3 yesterday...it's the most drawn out thing I've ever played (other than X2 [;)]), but it's strangely addictive. Feel a bit bad but just sort of waiting for the next big thing in DW to come out, then I'll probably be straight back into it!

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/2/2011 8:48:15 PM)

It could be addictive for the atmosphere and immersion but indeed crawling from one place to another even with SETA active it's no fun.

ollobrains -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/3/2011 2:47:33 AM)

having a dynmaic universe where factions battle over systems and youre actions indirectly help or hinder a race or some sort of interactional influence would be great for x3

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/3/2011 6:00:24 AM)

you can't do that atm? I thought faction missions were related to that or are they of significance only to the player and not the entire universe?

There are mods for X3 that do such things.

EvE Online IS a 4X ! A real time 4X, at that.

It's just that most of the people are grunts instead of leaders.

eXploration ? Wormholes, resources that change times to times on planets, need for recon...
eXpand ? Boy, aren't alliances/corporations spanning over dozens/hundreds systems enough for this ? (and fighting for it)
eXploit ? Well... Moons, planets, asteroid belts, Sleepers, missions, other people... Guess there is stuff to exploit, hehe. And since I can still get any ship or module I want, seems like they're exploited alright.
eXterminate ? Well, hundreds ships are destroyed on a daily basis and there are constantly inter-alliances wars, to the point some disappear and lose their territory...

So, yeah, EvE Online is a 4X. [:'(]

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 6:12:27 AM)

Traditionally, this type of game implies that you have control of the empire that does all the 4 X's...so you would own the alliances/corporations and decide where to expand and how to exploit. I've not played Eve so I don't know if you can do that.

Yes, you actually can.

In a certain way it is, but I see your point. [:)]
I always think that you are a "bodyless" entity in 4X and other strategy games. You have no ship or avatar of any kind that could interact with the game world directly. You are literally leading your empire.

This whole "what is 4X?" conversation is quite similar to "what is RPG?" conversation that I followed at ME2 forums a while back.
Just think about it: ROLE-PLAYING, PLAYING ROLE. What are you doing in pretty much every game in existence? Yup, funny thing isn't it?

I think it would much better to speak about RPGs AND classic RPGs

Aye, we agree. Even if we don't have a hero experience system or other rpg elements.....which I'd like to see even in 4x games, btw [:)]

'Elemental; War of Magic' by Stardock.

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 7:56:29 AM)

Thx Wade....I'm afraid I'm still stuck in HOMM 2 atm [:D]
I don't think I'll ever get past it.

Wade1000 -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 8:06:43 AM)

No problem. As I understand it, the engine/design for  Elemental, War of Magic is like a prototype for Galactic Civilizations 3.

Data -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 10:16:07 AM)

Now that's something to note. I'm kinda 50-50 on GalCiv2 but I'd like to see how 3 will turn up.

Igard -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 7:07:05 PM)

Indeed, Wade1000. That is very interesting. Noted for future reference.

Apheirox -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 7:46:23 PM)

Wow, keeping the topic bumped with completely off topic random spam posts. Good job guys!

Normally, I don't like unecessary bumping, but there's not exactly alot going on right now, so it's fine to just have an off topic conversation. Not a bid deal in this case.

Webbco -> RE: The biggest problem with Distant Worlds (5/4/2011 11:01:41 PM)

Well in that case....

Talking of X3, the new X game is out this year for those who are interested! I think it's called X rebirth. After playing a bit of X3 the past few days, I'm getting pretty bored already though....maybe the new one will be more interesting. I'm really just wanting to see some more DW action soon!
