phatkarp -> Your "Templates" (5/20/2011 10:28:39 PM)

With all this talk about templates, I would like to hear how other (better) players typically compose their formations.

Here are my standards:
- Infantry Division: 40 rifles, 5 bazookas, 5 machine guns, 3 mortars
Sometimes I sprinkle in either 2 light tanks or 2 armored cars.
If I expect to operate in forest or jungle, then I substitute SMGs for rifles.
- Infantry Garrison: 30 rifles, 10 machine guns, 4-6 AT guns, 4-6 flak.
- Early Armored Division: 4, 6, or 8 light tanks, with 5 rifles for each tank, as they can ride along.
- Aircraft - I try to organize into groups of 8, though early on I sometimes can only muster 4. I never mix aircraft types. Is there any advantage to doing that?

I always tailor it to the task at hand.

Tell me what you are trying to do and what the terrain is like, and my answer will be different.

Although I taylor it, a typical attacking unit is 40 SMG, 4 mortars, with an infantry gun or AT gun if I expect enemy armor. Armored units are typically 3 or 4 tanks with 10 -20 rifle infantry. Aircraft are typically 4 fighters and 4 dive bombers, with a few level bombers sometimes thrown in. In the late game, the number of aircraft are raised a bit (sometimes). I was using rifle infantry instead of SMGs until Vics lectures showed that rifles are almost worthless in the attacking role. A few units heavy on guns are used on the offense.

Machineguns are added in only if I expect to defend, and rifles are mixed with SMG if I expect counterattacks. I add a few ATGs and other cannons when I can afford it.

Your attack force with SMGs isnt going to be too good in open terrain, although for attacking in forest, hills, or city it will work to your advantage.

True, but now with cavalry available, it may replace infantry in the open when appropriate.

I suppose I'm not as organized as some of you. Like Allan, I tend to compose my units according to the task at hand and the threat level I'm defending against or attacking. I usually end up with ad hoc formations of various kinds. My game play probably would be better if I were a little more organized in my approach to formations. Battle conditions often dictate changes. We'll soon find out since phatkarp, Allan and myself along with one other just started a 2vs2 battle. Not yet sure who is going to ally with whom at this point. Just played my turn and the map does suggest at least two potential alliances.

SSFSX17 -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/21/2011 2:04:50 AM)

Line Division: 40 Rifles, 2 Machineguns, 2 Bazookas, 2 Mortars, 5 Horses

Siege/Builder Division: 40 Engineers, 40 Rifles, 5 Horses

Armored Division: 5 Light Tanks, 25 Rifles or 20 Rifles + 5 Machineguns

Heavy Armored Division: 5 Medium Tanks, 20 Rifles, 5 Mortars (usually to dislodge the typical kinds of divisions that the AI builds, and to capture AI-held cities)

Artillery is usually in groups of 10 hauled by 10 horses and backed up by 10 Flak, Air divisions are likewise usually in groups of 10.

Twotribes -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/21/2011 4:31:20 AM)

My Units.

20 Cavalry for search and early game opening of the map ( I play with shroud on and one start city and usually stone age)

45 rifle, 5 mg, 5 mortar, 5 bazooka, ( as tech allows) 2 inf guns, 1 AT gun, 1 flak, horse mounted.

4 armored cars

4 armored cars, 2 lt tanks, 20 rifle

2 armored cars, 2 lt tanks, 2 med tanks, 20 rifle

4 artillery, 4 horses

40 engineer, 4 horses

If I need a stronger infantry unit, i go with above but delete 5 rifle and add 5 more mortars.

Ande -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/21/2011 6:48:22 PM)

my templates:
Infantry:
20-50 rifles
0-20 smg
2-10 bazookas
2-10 machineguns
0-10 mortars
0-8 Infantry-guns
0-8 horses
total weight ~50, ignored with I-guns

Antitank
1-8 At-guns
0-8 horses
10-40 rifles
spare support weapons

Armoured units
0-3 medium tanks
0-4 light tanks
5-20 infantry
0-5 mortars
3-4 tanks total, max infantry without losing mobilization.

Artillery
4-12 Artillery
4-12 horses

Engineer
20, 40 engineers
1, 2 trucks

My templates isn't as much something I try to achieve but rather a guideline when deciding how many units should be created given the production of the turn.

lion_of_judah -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/23/2011 7:56:23 AM)

what are the sizes of your Infantry Brigades.....

I have conluded that if your divisions are 40 infantry and such then a Brigade would be 9-13 Infantry, 3 machine guns and 3 motors. Does this sound about right....

Twotribes -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/23/2011 11:57:59 AM)

Those are the units I build. I don't build smaller ones.

GrumpyMel -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/23/2011 5:58:56 PM)

Varies a bit based on the scenerio, but typicaly....

Infantry division - 30 rifles, 3 mg's, 3 mortars, 3 bazookas

Armored division - 4 tanks, 20 rifles (if enemy has significant air add halftrack + flak)

Armored infantry division - 2 x halftracks, 25 rifles, 3 mortars, 2 mg's, 1 AT gun (or Tank Destroyer)

Armored Cavalry Division - 2 x Armored Car's, 1 x halftrack, 20 x scouts

mgaffn1 -> RE: Your "Templates" (5/23/2011 6:57:51 PM)

Here are few I use:
"offense" infantry = 30 rifles, 3 mortar
"defense" infantry = 20-30 rifles, 4 machine gun (if used as a garrison in a front city, add 2-3 antitank or AA guns)
"STURM" infantry = 40 rifles, 10 mortars, 1-2 assault guns, (and later in war adding 2-3 halftracks)
armor = 5 light tanks, 15 rifles, 5-10 mortar
