Kipper -> Some advice before I buy... (7/9/2011 12:38:03 PM)

Some kind help appreciated please!

Like a lot of people, I am put off by the scope of this game and the fact that I have limited gaming time maybe 5 or 6 hours a week max. I am turned on to the game by being an East Front nut of long standing. I have been looking at the reviews and reading posts to get some sense of time commitment but I have a couple of questions:

1) Are there any new smaller scenarios appearing from the community?
2) Is there any way of putting quieter parts of the front on AI control to allow focus on critical sectors and speed things up a little and require less detailed work each turn? (Great to see auto air control BTW).
3) How long does a full turn take? I have been seeing an hour being mentioned? Is that true, or is that by folks who are counting each bullet :-)

Many thanks!

Kipper

I don't know about 1. The smaller scenarios in the game are interesting, though.

2)  Basically no. When you play a grand campaign, you must do everything yourself.  You can let the AI do some air missions, but this is not a huge time-savings (because that part of the game is pretty easy to manage yourself), and the same with the administrative task of Corps and Army-level support units (SUs) - you can allow the AI to move those around, but that's generally a bad idea (doing it yourself improves the performance of your force by a ton).

3)  First turns of the 41 GC can take a long time when you're new.  Several hours.  Once the game gets rolling, it's pretty easy to finish a turn in under 2 hours.

You should also take into account playing other humans as opponents: Generally a much more enjoyable game that way.  And you will find that some opponents can do a turn daily, others like myself can do 2 or 3 a week.  That might make it a little easier on your free time commitments.

On (2), I think you'll find that not having the AI control quiet parts of the front is not a big loss. Generally, if a sector is quiet there is very little you will have to do around it other than run recon to make sure its going to stay that way. Forts build themselves (with some nuances around how you can enhance the process).

1) Look here for links and a list of scenarios from users or unofficial sceanarios from some members of the development team: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2817299

2) No, a few items can be left automated, but not sectors of the front line.

3) Full campaign turns can take 1-2 hours for those that don't mircromanage too much. Smaller scenario turns can be much faster.

Thanks very much for the responses. Looks like a buy. Even tinkering with the game looks like a lot more bang for gaming hours than most games.
