September 13th, 1942 DEI/N Australia We run some armored units up to Fenton for a quick grab and take the base easily with 66:1 results. The 2/1 NAOU Detachment surrenders. Submarines Surprisingly we find an enemy sub far from home lurking in our shipping lane. SS Pompano gets past our escorts and attacks a big tanker. Thankfully it misses. A few more of these sightings and I'll have to get more aerial ASW going in the heart of the Empire. September 14th, 1942 India/Burma Several night air attacks on the port at Chittagong from Vengeance dive bombers and Wellingtons, no hits though. In the morning, Bettys from Colombo respond to sightings of enemy ships at Addu. 24x Bettys attack but none of them score hits. They do spot two destroyers, one minelayer, one xAP and CL Dauntless. However, one of our smaller subs, RO-63, on station at Addu, uses the distraction the air attacks caused to put two torpedoes into CL Dauntless, heavily damaging the ship and likely sinking her. Further inland, nine Wellingtons attack Jessore with no escorts. We have 71x Tojos on CAP, but the Wellingtons manage to mostly get away. China Since it has been a while, and based on the success at Keinko, I try a deliberate attack on Siangtan supported by most of the air power I have in China. Surprisingly, our attack gets a 2:1 result and the big enemy stack of 62,000 troops retreats northeast the road the leads northwest out of Changsha. We will follow along and see if we can't secure that roadway which would fully isolate Changsha. Just having Siangtan clear is a nice step forward, not to mention the 16,000 casualties suffered by the Chinese during the retreat. We manage to take out all the Hudsons for no losses. At Neikiang we launch our first assault and get 3:1 results against fort level 3. Not quite enough, but forts drop to two so hopefully the next attack will do better. The enemy stack from Kweilin makes its way onto the small road southeast of Kweilin. We had placed a single unit, the 58th Infantry Regiment there, just in case they moved that direction. The enemy stack arrived yesterday and shock attacked us today. They outnumber us 4:1 but still only get a 1:6 result, so our small unit is able to hold. I'll bring in some more units soon so we can wear this stack down. I may also move a unit in behind this one so it can't retreat back into the non-road hex. Other Good news: SS KIX is reported to have been sunk near Trivandrum on May 12, 1942

September 15th, 1942 India/Burma Jessore airfield goes to size 5, allowing us to bring in some more fighters. Some bombardment at Jamshedpur but otherwise it is quite. All of our Diamond Harbor/Calcutta assault force is in place at Jessore, they just need to unpack from the train. We will have a strong force consisting of: 4th Div, 5th Div, 18th Div, 48th Div, 38th/A Div, 1st Tank Div, and 2nd Tank Div. They will be lead by the 2nd Area Army HQ. All the infantry units are at 99-100% TOE and they all have XP in the 90's. The Tank units are not quite as filled out, but they have just shy of 300 AV each, and since they are better devices, I'm sure they will help. My hope is the 2nd Division can bounce the 19th Indian and secure that road, then there will be no chance of the enemy troops at Jamshedpur somehow reinforcing Calcutta before we can cross the river. (Our map/pwhex file doesn't have the fix, so Calcutta is still an island - river crossings all around). DEI/N Australia Wyndham airfield goes to size 4, which is where we will stop. Three weakened Australian armored units arrive in Katherine yesterday, so we attack today and get an 487:1 result, causing all three to surrender. Not sure why they entered the base, but the 754th Tank Bn, 2/10th Armoured Regiment and 2/11th Armoured Car Regiment, are out of commission for a while. Submarines SS Pompano attacks DD Yugure which is part of an AO group sailing near Okinawa. The enemy sub misses thankfully. Other Previous report of sinking of SS S-41 incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service

September 16th, 1942 India/Burma The 2nd Division finally forces the 19th Indian to retreat. It retreats southeast to Howrah. This might not seem like it, but this is an important win. With this, the 2nd Div will split off one third to go northwest and flip the hexside the covers the road from out of Jamshedpur towards Calcutta. This means it will take many many days for any reinforcements to get from Jamshedpur to Calcutta. The rail hexside to the west is still under our control from our Para excursion, so he can not rail troops out at this moment. The other two thirds of the 2nd Div will march southeast and time their arrival to coincide with another third of division that has been sitting in the clear hex to the northeast from Howrah for sometime. After they are in Howrah, the 1st third of the 2nd will return via the road from Jamshedpur, the 2nd will reform and the other 3rd will cover the hex this battle just occurred in to prevent any capture by jungle incursion from the west. Once 2nd is reformed, it will assault Howrah. TL;DR - see map below. Next attack should do it based on modifiers and casualties. The Chinese southeast of Kweilin shock attack again and get a 1:16 result against our lonely Regiment. More enemy troops had arrived, making the battle 21,000 Chinese versus 3,400 Japanese. Thank goodness for low enemy supply and terrain on our part.

September 17th, 1942 India/Burma Quiet for a change in India. Pacific We attack at Terapo (on New Guinea) again and another unit is destroyed. China We attack Neikiang today and get a 4:1 result causing the four Chinese units present to retreat to Chungking. We capture all 20 light industry completely intact! The enemy loses about 2,400 men and 12 guns in the retreat. We get a 1:2 result which isn't too bad given the terrain and that we are outnumbered 5 to 1. The enemy takes 1,800 casualties. Submarines At Tahiti, APD locates our little Ha-26 and DD henley proceeds to score some hits with deptch charges. The little sub can't take much and is destroyed.

September 18th, 1942 India/Burma After yesterday's silence, things pick up today. A Helen at Colombo gets a hit on an enemy submarine. Near Calcutta, the change in the balance of air power looks like it is swinging our way. Enemy Wellingtons and Blenheim's attack the partial division near Howrah that is marching southwest into Howrah. Our leaky CAP from Jessore puts up about 30 planes against each enemy wave and we do a good job disruping raids. Only 20 enemy bombers and 10 fighters attack. We take down 9x Hurricane IIc and 3x Blenheims, while losing only 1x Tojo and 1x Nick. We lose 9x Ki-21-IIa and 4x Ki-21-Ic. At least we still get through and inflict about 250 casualties. The Ki-21 pools are both getting near empty. I have been very conservative on these early model builds since I don't want to waste HI on planes I'll never use. I will probably need to turn on some of the idle Ki-49 factories soon so that I can get some of these Ki-21 units upgraded. I may need to downgrade a unit or two in China to Lily's to keep the pilots training until the Ki-49 production catches up. Our forces from Kweilin that have been marching towards Kweiyang finally meet some resistance and easily defeat the roadblock with 9:1 odds. One enemy unit surrenders and the other four retreat to Kweiyang. The enemy loses 3,400 casualties and 8 guns in the retreat. Onward to Kweiyang. September 19th, 1942 DEI/N Australia Sallys at Koepang score a hit on an enemy submarine. Seems they are venturing forth a little more these days. Either that or we're getting better at finding them. In Australia, Nicks fly sweep over Daly Waters and then Sally escorted by Zeros bomb the airfield there destroying one Kittyhawk IA on the ground. Pacific A small xAK hauling an engineer unit to Kwajelein gets attacked by SS Halibut near Eniwetok. The enemy sub manages to connect with a working torpedo. Our escorts look but the enemy sub gets away. The damage transport falls out of the TF and later in the day, Halibut finds the ship again and hit with another torpedo and a couple deck gun shots. The transport is sunk and we lose two guns. September 20th, 1942 India/Burma Enemy continues to sweep over the clear areas east of Howrah. Today is more even - we down 4x P-40E and lose 3x Nicks and 1x Tojo. China We attack the troops that retreated from Neikiang and get a 1:1 result. Other Singapore expands airfield to size 8

September 21st, 1942 India/Burma An enemy unit finally marches to Sambalpur and the base flips to the Allies. China The Chinese put up a healthy CAP of 19x P-43A-1 Lances and 11x P-66 Vanguards over the hex west of Chungking and catch our planes off guard. We have some Oscars escorting the Sallys, but they don't fight well due to the escort mission and the high altitude of the enemy CAP. We lose 10x Oscars and 9x Sallys and only kill one of each of the Lancers and Vanguard. Yuck. The Silver lining is that of the 19 planes we lost, only 4 pilots were KIA. September 22nd, 1942 India/Burma Our troops continue to march on Diamond Harbor and I think they are still not detected. With luck, we will capture the base on the initial assault before any enemy airplanes can get away. Tomorrow we cross the river into Ledo. Pacific At Terapo we finally force the last enemy unit, the 224 Group RAF to surrender. We capture 1,200 men. China The Chinese get another air victory today. I had sent some Sonia to bomb enemy troops near Changsha and 15x P-43A-1 Lancers show up on CAP. They take down 19 of the old dive bombers. We lose 7 pilots, but they were all rookies. At least they were old planes. Northwest of Changsha we try an attack on the enemy troops there in the forest guarding the road. We only get a 1:2 result and see that there are 66,000 enemy troops. We will wait a bit to attack again. We attack at Kweiyang and get a 1:1 result and drop forts to 2. So far so good. Other Aircraft Ki-100-I Tony advances R&D to 11/44

September 23rd, 1942 India/Burma Vengeance and Wellington bombers return to night Port attacks at Chittagong. More importantly, we easily take Ledo and not a bit of damage occurs to the oil refineries there. We capture all 70 oil and refinery intact! Instantly, Asansol goes up to about 1800 fuel on hand so the moderate sized HI factory there will run every turn now which will help our supply gains for sure. We happen to capture two Audax planes on the ground at Ledo. I don't think we have to worry about any supplies getting to China via air transport for quite a while. Tomorrow is another important attack - Diamond Harbor here we come! Pacific Bettys from Timor bomb Daly Waters and manage to destroy 2x Kittyhawk IA and damage several more. Submarines Near Hawaii, I-5 find the xAK Forbes Hauptmann and puts a torpedo into the ship. I-5 comes around for another pass later in the morning and hits again - sinking the enemy ship. September 24th, 1942 India/Burma Wellingtons launch night attacks on Jessore, but don't hit anything. The big news of the day is the attack on Diamond Harbor. Four and a third infantry divisions and two Armored divisions cross the river and hit the base hard. The enemy only consists of the Diamond Harbor Fortress and a construction unit. The Fortress surrenders and the engineers retreat to Calcutta. The enemy casualties include 7,500 men, 35 guns and 5 vehicles. The big news though, is that our surprise attack seemed to work as the airfields have lots of planes still here for our capture and inspection. A total of 78 planes are captured including 20x Hurricane IIb Trop, 16x B-25C Mitchell, 16x Hurricane I Trop, 14x Albacore I, and 12x Blenheim IV. The base is well damaged, 100 port, 2 Service and 70 Runway, but at least the Allies were nice enough to leave the airfield and port partly expanded - Port is size 3 at 45% and airfield is size 5 at 31%. I probably won't spend any supply increasing these though. Our troops are in good condition, so we will immediately march on the real prize - Calcutta! DEI/N Australia Bettys hit Daly Waters again and do pretty well - 14 Air base hits, 13 supply hits, 48 runway hits. 8x Kittyhawk IA are destroyed on the ground. Sallys from Wyndham hit the base as well and get 4 more supply hits and 8 runway hits. The supply hits are nice to see since I'm sure it is tough to get supply to come all the way up those secondary roads. With the planes in India, and a couple ops losses, the total Allied air losses today are 88 planes. At Katherine, a single enemy LCU entered the base, so we attacked and bounced the 6th Australian Brigade out of the base, inflicting about 1,000 casaulties on the unit. Not sure what John is up to, but that unit had a negative supply modifier so hopefully once Darwin is in our hands, we will be able to push south to get some breathing room. China We attack Kweiyang again, and the attack is okay at 1:2, dropping forts to level 1, but unfortunately we take pretty heavy casaulties and the 40th Division gets wrecked. I might have to wait for some reinforcements to come in before attacking again.

Realistic is on. I set up all my R&D from day 1, and on day 2 fiddled with supplies to ensure all bases had the 10k+ needed to repair, so perhaps getting that helped. For the A6M line, did you leave the factories on A6M3 until they were repaired? Since the A6M3 comes pretty early, those ones repair quickly, then once repaired you can move it up the line to A6M3a (or M5 or whatever you like - I went to M8).

I see. Guess I qualify for a dishonorable mention in the "Worst Player" thread. Made many noob mistakes in production and R&D management. For my defense, it is my first AE PBEM. Reading the forum is one thing, but keeping in mind and applying all the info... Way to go, but that is part of the fun.

September 25th, 1942 India/Burma Vengeance and Wellingtons attack Diamond Harbor airfields at night scoring one hit. In the day, 23x P-39D Airacobras sweep DH encountering some Tojos and Nicks. We come out on the losing end, losing 4 Tojo and 3 Nicks in exchange for killing 3 P-39D. On the ground, the 2nd Division has been reformed at Howrah and launches its first deliberate attack. Forts are dropped from 3 to 2 and we get a 1:2 result. Casualties are light, so we should be able to attack again soon. September 26th, 1942 India/Burma Some Wellington attacks on Diamond Harbor at night, but otherwise it is pretty quiet as our troops march to Calcutta. China We try an attack at Kweiyang just to see how we do after the 40th got wrecked the other day and we only get a 1:3 result and don't touch the forts. I think I'll bring in the 8th and 21st Divisions. They are now back to 100% TOE after their debacle at Canton Island some months ago and they aren't far away at Tokyo. Submarines Had a new occurrence for me today. I received a message that "SSX Ha-17 fails to surface after dive at Midway Island" and then it said the midget was sunk. On the sunk ships list, the sunk by field says "Marine Casualty". Neat, although I would prefer it happened to enemy ships rather than my own. At least it was just a midget sub.

September 27th, 1942 India/Burma 2nd Division attacks again at Howrah, taking forts down another notch to level 1 and getting a 1:2 result. Tomorrow we storm Calcutta! Movement indicators would suggest at least some units are fleeing the city to the west. I will get some recon going on Cuttack and prepare a couple paratroop units at Chittagong for a drop. We may be able to take Calcutta easy if the enemy leaves, and yet at the same time, if we can capture Cuttack, we'll be able to cut off the troops John might be trying to save. Submarines Near Pearl Harbor, I-6 takes a shot at both DD Laffey and DD Clark, missing both. I-6 evades ASW counter attack though. September 28th, 1942 India/Burma And we have arrived! Our forces cross into Calcutta with a shock attack and do well - getting a 1:1 result against fort level 4 and heavy urban terrain modifiers. Forts drop to level 3 and we can see now that there isn't much here to stand in our way. We do pick up some disruption, and I will wait for our HQ unit to catch up before we launch our next attack. There is also the matter of blocking some hexes so these enemy units retreat west and don't end up behind our lines. The Nicks go in low with guns blazing and 250kg bombs falling. About three hundred casualties are caused, but the Nicks get beat up by AA pretty seriously with seven aircraft going down. Appartently 100ft doesn't allow much room to bail out, and all seven pilots are lost. China We attack the stack at Kweilin again and get a 1:1 result this time, so that's a good sign. I think I will march a small unit down the road from Hengyang so it can enter the jungle and prevent this stack from retreating again so I can eliminate it. Up north, we attack the stack near Sian and get a 1:2 result but we take 4,800 casualties to 1,400 enemy casualties. Most are just disabled units on our side, but we will still need to rest to recover some of those squads. Those Chinese fight well for being out of supply. I guess there are just so many - 41,000 of us versus 110,000 of them.

September 30th, 1942 A busy month ends on a relative quiet day. India/Burma Another submarine is hit by a Sally east of Ceylon. The enemy air forces leave Calcutta. This means there is no air resistance to speak of in the area since all the enemy airbases remaining are size 1. The closest airbase of any size (and it is a size 9) is Madras. Everything else anywhere near Calcutta is only size 1. Therefore we start bombing the enemy units that are retreating from Howrah and Calcutta since they are in the clear. One it slows them down, and two it is easy casualties since the terrain is clear. I have a unit freshly relieved from garrison duty in northeastern China that is quite large at something like 150% TOE. That unit, combined with a brigade will attack Ichang.

Another quiet month in the ocean which is actually a good thing for us since we aren't burning fuel sailing back and forth everywhere. On land there was lots of action, and it would appear our major objectives outside of China are well within reach. CA Portland is still on the sunk list. Could it be that we actually sunk the cruiser? In any case, no changes to the sunk capital ships list this month. Although the captured bases slowed down to only six, Diamond Harbor was a big one in terms of progress, although it isn't worth much in points. The destruction of two Commonwealth divisions and LCU losses elsewhere, pushed up our VP ratio significantly to 3.635. In India things are going well. We have a source of fuel and oil at Ledo to run the Heavy Industry we have captured from the British. Diamond Harbor is under our control and we have troops in Calcutta as the enemy flees the city via their last open route. With nothing but size one airbases within 500 or 600 miles of Calcutta, we have no Allied threat from the air at this time, at least until heavy bombers start to hit us. The fall of Calcutta is imminent. Once we have that city, we will move to try and isolate and eliminate some Commonwealth troops and then work on capturing some bases for a defensive buffer and some additional supply production. Hopefully we can generate enough supply here that we can export some to other areas of the Empire. In China the capture of Kweilin was important to our progress from the south on Chungking. In the Chungking plains, Chungking is fully surrounded on the northern 4 hexsides. Although we attack Kweiyang, high casualties have necessitated waiting for reinforcements. Two 100% rebuilt divisions from the Canton Island attack have departed Tokyo to go to Hong Kong and provide some temporary help in China. Very little action in the Pacific outside of some submarine activities around Canton Island and Tahiti. In Australia Katherine is captured and our troops are about to attack Darwin. After that our two divisions and other supporting units may push south a bit to Daly Waters and a bit beyond to provide some breathing room. October 1st, 1942 India/Burma 2nd Division attacks at Howrah again, today with a 1:2 result. Two enemy units have now left the base leaving the previously retreated 19th Indian Division, the Bannu Brigade and an AA unit to defend against our division. Pacific One of our PB's at Enderbury scores two depth charge hits on SS S-32. That should be enough to send the enemy sub home. There are plenty here in the area though. October 2nd, 1942 India/Burma We send lots of Helen's and Sally's to bomb the lone enemy unit at Cuttack in support of a pretty large paradrop on the base. The 1st Raiders and the 1st Yokosuka SNLF make the jump and after a brief fight manage to route the 6/18th Royal Garwal Bn and capture Cuttack. This capture blocks the rail line out of Calcutta and Howrah, so enemy troops will have to fight their way out now. Given they will be chased by our 1st and 2nd Armoured Divisions, they may have a tough time. That being said, we are in a slightly precarious situation. Some transports will continue to bring in the rest of the two paratroop units, but the bulk will shift to flying in the 56th/C Division so that we can have some heavy weapons support at the base. Enemy units from the east will have to cross a river into the base so hopefully we can get enough AV here and get forts up to level 1 so that we don't get kicked out. At Diego Garcia our subs strike again. This time I-153 hits a loaded AO igniting its cargo. DD Crane tries to get our sub, but we escape unharmed.
