Redmarkus5 -> RE: Operation Barbershop II (Carnage vs. Redmarkus) (7/26/2011 9:38:09 PM)

OVERVIEW

My first GC PBEM as the Soviets was played against Carnage way back near the start of things. My goal then was to make a few important points about game balance and to test whether a Soviet player who got knocked all the way back to Moscow in '41 could still launch a winter counter offensive. What we learned was that he could do that and more. I have not played as the Soviets since (and only once as the Axis) so with all the code and game balance changes that have taken place, most of which I am only vaguely aware of, I will be learning the game anew. Expect a poor start with slow improvement as I come to grips with things.

Ultimately, my goal with WiTE is to have a fun learning experience in the context of a convincing representation of war on the eastern front. I will again be doing my best to conduct my operations as I think the Soviets did, at least in spirit. However, as Carnage knows what that meant last time, and as I have no desire to hand him victory on a plate, I will try to play smarter and I may have to use tactics that I don't particularly like, from time to time, purely in order to survive.

More to follow...

Player Poll

Aggressive forward Soviet defense or pull everything back as fast as possible and force the Axis to extend their line of supply?

Redmarkus5 -> RE: Operation Barbershop II (Carnage vs. Redmarkus) (7/29/2011 8:46:39 AM)

HOUSE RULES

Carnage and I have agreed the following house rules for this campaign:

1. No Soviet AF attacks before '43.
2. No Soviet amphib landings prior to Jan '42 and none ever in the north or the map. Also, Soviets can't amphib west of Sevastopol if it's captured, same with no amphib west of Odessa if it's captured.
3. No Soviet amphib invasion of Romania as long as one Axis combat unit is based in Constansa
4. No pure checker board defense - each player must make a gentlemanly attempt to build a realistic front line. Defense in depth behind that front is allowed, of course.
5. No Romanian gambit to seek early release. If 11th Armee and the Romanians are released early due to creation of Lvov pocket, the Axis player agrees not to move them until their standard release date.
6. No Finnish move/attack until BOTH Leningrad AND Moscow are taken. The reason for this is that the Finns feared Stalin and they made diplomatic guarantees to the Soviets not to go beyond their historical borders. We don't believe they would have changed their view on this unless they were 100% convinced that the SU was beaten for good.
7. Soviet winter offensive deliberate attack limit of 3 Front commands per turn during winter '41-42. Other fronts can only conduct hasty attacks each turn. So, the SU cannot attack deliberately all along the front in any one turn, although Carnage will not know where the main attacks are going to come from. Hopefully, this will make for a more realistic first winter. From 42-43 winter onward, anything goes for both sides.
8. If the Axis player pulls his front back more than 5 hexes prior to the start of the winter '41 counter offensive (other than shortnening the line, etc.) this is considered a surrender - a coup has occurred and Hitler has been executed. (So, no retreat to Poland for the winter!)

I'd play the first 15 turns of the campaign as one huge delaying strategic maneuver, while preparing to stand and fight at Leningrad, Moscow, Kharkov and Stalino. First turns railcap is used to mobilize reserves almost exclusively, as August progresses, I'd say it's about time to start reversing the priority and evac'ing industry first.

As a complete aside CarnageINC, you have one of the coolest avatars I've ever seen. What is the picture from?

What does the speech bubble 'Coastwatcher Hall of Famer: Walter Eckland', infer to? Is it something to do with WitP??

And who is Walter Eckland?

I'm intrigued!![;)]

THE FIFTH COLUMN

In order to defeat Carnage INC I feel the need to recruit a specialist team of agents to infiltrate his units and distract his troopers. Meet Agent 6e...

Tossing pics of babes around never hurts an AAR.

Ah, this actually IS an AAR? Featuring War of the Babes? Well, maybe Alzheimer is playing tricks with my perception, and the illustrations above are situation maps. Coded maybe?

Back on track, Red, bing it on, focus on kicking Axis ass instead of chasing pinups like Stalins serfs back then probably did for too long. [8D]

Redmarkus5 -> RE: Operation Barbershop II (Carnage vs. Redmarkus) (8/3/2011 9:34:30 PM)

Yawn... Waiting for Carnage to send the first turn but he's busy with work this week. Just thought I'd keep you all entertained in the meantime.

Now, about the Frauleins, they are not 'off-topic' at all. These secret agents are my only source of hard Intel - and I mean HARD Intel, gentlemen!

sillyflower -> RE: Operation Barbershop II (Carnage vs. Redmarkus) (8/3/2011 10:19:39 PM)

let's hope the turn is a long time coming then

I would post a picture of Agent X20 from Stingray but sadly lack any computer skills so I can't

parusski -> RE: Operation Barbershop II (Carnage vs. Redmarkus) (8/4/2011 5:01:29 AM)

That's selfish. Gimme the number NOW.
