I was postulating from my limited experince .. when my unit air commander had low ratings and my pilots were inexperinced my fighters did not engage but preferred to fly back to the O-club and have a tall one ... but other factors are clearly involved. The good news is .. this is June 1942 and we are seeing these behaviors .. we still have the Tarawa problem that Alfred warned me about .. [;)] We are in the process of putting up some resistance in the Gilbert's . This will take a month or so. In the meantime the 24th Division will have to take some punishment.

Just a little update on the progress of the game. We started on July 7th, and we have been at it for 123 days. During that time we have 176 turns completed at one turn representing one game day. That is 1.43 turns per real life day. This is actually moving along at a pretty good pace. Today we work more on logistics and getting stuff in position to provide a flexible response in the Fall of '42 ..

In the meantime I have to keep the logistics going and manage supply. These upgrades are good so reducing operations while refitting seems logical. We continue to slowly use our ADP's to position the Pacific Ocean HQ in a secret location along with staging BF's. This is a rather slow process unitl we can project more airpower over the Gilbert's. One other problem is that aat the end of this month we have to bring in more II USAAF fighters to replace the POA fighters withdrawing .. More later ..

**************************OZ 04 JUN 1942 ******************************************* Despite a shortage of supply up the roads from Alice Springs to Tennent Creek we are getting in 30 supply per day by air not enough to maintain a campaign but enough to make the IJA's day. B-17's continue to bomb an armored unit trying to flank Daily Waters while BF's run away south toward Tennet Creek. This airfield will soon be at level 2 and though lacking supply will be able to fly minimal fighters to intercept the Oscars soon to be stationed at Daily Waters. I strongly feel that the ground bombing campaign has struck a notion with the IJA that they have to LRCAP thier gorund forces. Daily Waters is the only place to do this. We will make this a place of pwer projection with fighters and B-17's. It will take quite awhile and they will lack supplies but we will have a division plus at Tennet Creek. Then we can meet the IJA thrust and destroy these two units. Clearly going on to Darwin will be impossible. But right now the road is providing enough supply that the units are not depleting supply moving. We shall see what happends when we get to Tennet Creek. A quick smashup and destruction of two LYB units and then retreat the division to Alice Springs for redeployment. A Militia unit should be able to hold Tennet Creek at that point. Nice work pounding the armor units. I think bombing is a little to potent, but just wait you will have your turn at it. PM is hard place to stand and fight. Watching you on this one. I look forward to your updates keep it up.

This is one advantage of putting USN submarines in merchant lanes rather than trying to intercept capitol ships .. they can at least use guns on unarmed merchants ..more likley to happen out here in the small atolls with port level 1 .. I am right now a full two months off from completing the first phase operations here. That is establish interlocking fighter bases and have a base sufficeint at Tabetuea to project long range bombing into the Marshals. By next week the PBY's will be carring Torpedoes and start making an impact beyond naval search. There is an immediate tatical problems to solve here. I did not drop Radar off at Tarawa in the first run. So an operational objectiive is to get Radar on Tarawa. To do this I have to keep with the estbalished plan of interlocking fighter bases. The first base post Tarawa is Albemama. Once Abbemana is esblished then we can drop a BF with Radar, Naval support .. etc that has been prepping for this base. I have decided to upgrade fighter aircraft and get the Wasp in theater before dropping BF's, Enigneers and Supply on Albemama. 500 fighter aircraft and upgraded BB's escorting the trnasports .. the CAP is going to leak for sure but hopefully the prewar BB's absorb the torps and no carriers will sink to a Betty torp run .. Everything has to be upgraded first before we engage ... especally the transports .. But a fighter base on Albemama negates the free bomber runs on Tarawa .. In Oz the Lilly's here decided to bomb an empty airfield .. Afternoon Air attack on Daly Waters , at 76,131 Weather in hex: Partial cloud Raid spotted at 44 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet. Aircraft flying at their extended range are depicted on the combat report with an asterisk after their details of their dropped ordnance. No asterisk against the Lilys in the pasted combat report, hence they weren't flying at extended range. Alfred

I will keep bombing Mandalay until I yield no more Lilly's ..and we build up Akyab for the next phase of this operation .. launching raids at Prome and Ragoon ... with air superiority eventually when we attack Manadaly the open hexes will present a huge difficulty to move troops from Rangoon .. where the Imperial Guards cohabitate ..

Yes. See second point paragraph on page 163 of the manual. Those Lilys hitting Akyab are flying from an airfield too small to support them and one of the penalties is that they are forced to fly as if they were at extended range. Technically the asterisks denotes the aircraft is reduced to dropping only the reduced ordnance level/type. Reduced ordnance is automatic and only occurs when extended range is involved. Note that some aircraft sometimes use their alternative ordnance even though flying at normal range (eg no available torpedoes) hence why an asterisk is not technically applied to them but only to extended range. Here is the situation 6th June 1942. Intel tells us that 4 bombers are still at Mandalay and this base is insuficent to support the bombers. We shall attack until he is able to pull them out or I smash them all. The real key here is the ability to establish a level 7 base at Akyab and eventually have the 10th AF stationed here. This will enable HB to attack Ragoon and extend southward to interdict the Betty Bases. I am getting a pretty good feel of the forces here. Right now we have 2 Corps total in India. The big thing is the establsihment of bases for which we support our advance (what in real life the first counter invasion lacked .. that and coordination). Oz is concerning me from the fact we advanced just short of Tennet Creek and 50 supplies per turn is not sustaining operations. Burma has the same problem in that a lot of jungle is between us and Manadalay and supply is difficult to get flowing until Ragoon is taken. In Oz, supply by land is never going to happen. I think the experiment in Oz will be what happends when two forces collide and neither one has sufficent supply? Does the defender always prevail? If I cut him off from darwin and that little road to Daily Waters we are both in the same boat. Except, so far my atacking force is not getting bombed every turn. [;)] Ok more later .. DOCUP: Ya .. my busy season is my "residency" [well NP vs. MD but you can get the picture] Ok team I just sent my turn in ... unbeknowest to the IJ player .. Tarawa is fully recovered from the bomabrdment and air attacks. 2 TK's sit at Makin. Thus I have moved fighters to Tarawa and put one 5 plane squadron on escort duty. We are about to fly 45 B-25's from Tabatieua to Makin with the object of sinking these TK's. At the very least put the fear of God in them. In addition, Unescorted Betty's and escorted by 8 zero's Nell's are about to meet 25 P-40's averge experince of 60 with two top aces in the group. I am hoping for say 4 -5 planes each from the group of bombers to meet their fate. I do have one problem still at Tarawa .. I need to move a real BF there ... The air support is a lame 24 .. what was landed when we got interurrpted by the KB. it will have to be a coordinanted amphib effort escorted by CV's and LBA's. The CV's are getting an overhaul and the planes are being upgraded uniformally. Mostly fighters ..production is 45 per month and I need 36 more Wildcat fighters to fill the CV air groups. We should kick this off starting with July 10th. In other news we are manging the upgrades this turn... beans bullets and butts .. while resiting the IJ's last gasps being the superior force ... soon .. very soon the tide will turn ..

The severe engine damage comment indicates that some major engine damage was inflicted. The quantum might be large, or it might be small. All that you can be confident is that with major engine damage she will have to go to a large port or a shipyard. The out of action time might be mainly comprised of passage time to a suitable location rather than time spent off line. Of course you might have been very lucky, but the lack of other corroborating evidence suggests 3 months off line is a quite optimistic assessment. A more conservative estimate (assuming she wasn't sunk as reported) is 2-4 weeks out of the frontline eventually (but not necessarily immediately). Alfred

Alfred Well we have done hopefully one more thing .. put the fear of submarines as a true possibility in the mind of the IJ. Until this point the IJ has purposefully rolled over detected USN submarines thinking they are no real threat. This might have influenced the decision cycle. At the very least one CV is headed out of theater. BTW) Even though the game reports the ship is sunk .. the air losses do not show the ground losses ....this ship is in some damaged state but not sunk ..

Betty's and Nell's continue to bombard Tarawa but the base is now open. The IJ is now tempted to hit Tarawa with the KB but for the fact one CV is now damaged at some state less than perfect. In teh meantime submarines move into that magic 8 hex away position to at the very least send shivers down the IJ's spine. As many readers have advised me -- my inital estimation of how long the 24th Division could last was very optimistic. On some turns we burn over 500 supply in a day depending on bombing die rolls. There is now 18K supply on Tarawa. Between now and the end of the month we are going to have to test the IJ's meddle and risk resupply. The good news is .. we are getting the upper hand -- slowly, but in 10 days the base was back to full operation after the IJ spent a tremendous effort to supress the base. Its going to be a very close call .. Tarawa might be lacking double supply for a week or two while we muster the right forces to project enough power to continue operations in the Gilberts. This includes those AA upgrades on my merchant and capitol ships now rotating out of PH. I will update Oz in a couple of days but that situation is developing with Townsville and Carnes reaching airbase status that will support B-17's. At that point Alice Springs will base nothing but Transport aircraft. ny59giants most certainly was correct .. that even with a massed air supply I am not sure I can project ground power to Daily Waters. Instead, Port Headland is a much more sutible base/port to project power from. Crackaces HQ has to relook at the strategy in Oz in conjuction with the Gilbert operations. The really good news? This is scenarario #1 ... soon .. very soon... Allied forces will have the quantity to project serious pressure on IJ operations. March '43 and quality starts its effect.....
