Orm -> A look at Barbarossa. (AAR) (7/30/2011 11:53:26 PM)

I just placed the USSR units in the Barbarossa scenario. Here is a overwiev picture of the central portion of the map. It is from a game that Red Prince and I are playing at the moment.

Here's the German setup for the game, showing about the same area.

And this gives you a better view of the Polish border.

Here is a picture on what options that are in play

Orm -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 9:33:38 AM)

Now it is time to place my reserves. I leave Leningrad almost completely defended by reserves. If Finland attacks that could be troubling but I have no regular units to spare for this purpose except the 1st Engineer Division.

Orm -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 9:38:35 AM)

The only defence I have of Karelia is located in Murmansk. 3rd reserve Army and 1st Ski division looks a bit weak. But maybe Finland will stay out of this war. Lets hope so [;)]

When I saw the setup for Leningrad, I was drooling. [X(] Until I remembered he had reserves to set up! [:D]

Edit: Well, the first thing I want to do, of course, is to see how much I need to get done in these 5 turns if I want to win the game:

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 10:36:35 AM)

Unfortunately for the Soviets, Finland is going to enter the war. [:-] However, it seems the goal is to take back what is rightfully theirs. Murmansk appears to be safe, for the time being.

After being Aligned by Germany, you'll notice that the Finnish LND (Fokker C.X) is nowhere to be seen. Well, the plane got sent to the Reserve Pool during setup, and the Pilot is being shipped to Germany to spend 2 months learning how to fly the Ju 52 ATR that arrives as a reinforcement next turn.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 11:17:12 AM)

Speaking of Pilots, now seems as good a time as any to look at the Optional Rules selection. We decided to use more or less the Standard Set of rules that come with MWiF. There were a few choices that I think are of interest:

  • Most of the MWiF games I've played used the 2D10 Land CRT, so I've been trying to get a feel for the 1D10 CRT recently. Orm was kind enough to agree to that, along with the Blitz Bonus rule.
  • I was a little worried that using the Railway Movement Bonus (which I usually use) would be too much of a German advantage, but I think that using HQ Movement (which I don't) counters that very nicely.
  • Another rule that I really like, even though it sometimes confuses me is Fractional Odds. The reason I like it is that it's easy to miscalculate the factors you can bring to bear against a target. Instead of having that attack that was supposed to be a 4:1 Assault reduced to 3:1 because you only managed to get 39:10, instead of the 40:10 you thought you had, Fractional odds gives you a 90% chance that you don't have to pay for your mistake.

Finally, I was going to attempt to figure out what these rules mean based on the chart from the Millennium Annual, but I realized that benefits & disadvantages from that chart probably don't apply to this scenario.

Anyway, to start things off I decided on a Land Action (no, really? [;)] ), but I'm going to save my O-chit for later. I don't like that little fleet in Leningrad, so the first thing I did was to use one of my Air Moves to put the Condor NAV out into the Baltic Sea.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 11:41:36 AM)

I decided to take a risk with my Ground Strikes. In Lithuania, I wanted to disorganize the GARR, hoping to improve my chances to Blitz by it, and succeeded. In the south, I hit Lvov and manged to disorganize one of the 2 units there. The risk was in trying to disorganize the units hiding in a forest with my Stuka. It failed completely.

I had hoped that I could trap several good units without supply. I'm going to try to take both Lvov and Cernauti (risky), and if I had succeeded, it would have been very difficult to get any of these units away from the front lines. Oh, well. I'll have to think of something else. [:)]

Risky, bordering on stupid? [;)][:D]

Edit: On the serious side I would like to hear your comments on it.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 12:56:47 PM)

These are those attacks I said I was going to make in the south. Normally there is only one Flyout shown at a time, but I wanted you to see a bit more of what was happening. The 49:10 attack is using 8 Factors of Ground Support, and the 34:10 attack is getting 2 Factors.

[image]local://upfiles/38062/47D2B5CE183C4E9992B0BA425DDA1585.jpg[/image]

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 1:07:21 PM)

Here are the rest of the attacks. From north to south, the odds are (including Ground Support, not shown):

  • 7:1
  • 5:1
  • 5:1 ; 6:1 Blitz
  • 5:1 ; 6:1 Blitz
  • 5:1 ; 6:1 Blitz
  • 7:1

Yeah, I'm using up my air power pretty fast. I do that on surprise impulses. I'm not very smart with my planes.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (7/31/2011 1:40:51 PM)

And the results:

That Blitz on the GARR in Lithuania rolled a '1' and annoyed me to no end. [:@] In all, I rolled three '1' results and a '3' result (on a 7:1), and ended up with way too many disorganized units in the North. On the plus side, both of my risky southern attacks came up with rolls of '9', which does make some tough decisions for his units there. On the not-so-plus side, I had to use up on of my HQs early in the turn to get my Northern Front back on its feet. I actually haven't fully decided yet which way I'm going to go, but the southern front looks healthier.

Also, fool that I am, I forgot to move the Finnish armies up to Leningrad, so I guess Orm gets a light reprieve. [:)]

Here's the Front at the end of the Impulse:

And here is a closer look at the souther pocket.

Not a nice sight for USSR with 2 armies and 2 corps trapped in a out of supply pocket.

2 armies managed to withdraw before they got trapped in that pocket along with the othersl. 39th Army, having trouble sith supply, withdrew north towards the forrest north of Lvov. Praying for a resupply there if they can halt the German panzers long enough. 2nd Mechanized Army used up the last of its supplies making a dash east. Fortunately the Russian air force managed to resupply it as it reunited with the Southern Panzer Army Group.

Well, I think it's time to bring Hungary into the war. [:)] Again, I prefer the Luftwaffe to these feeble aircraft of the lesser powers [sm=00000643.gif] The Pilot can learn to fly them, oe else! These troops will probably sit around screening those for trapped Russians for a while.

And my attacks, in the North (on the left):

  • 33:7 (4:1) Assault on Kaunas
  • 20:5 (4:1) Assault on Vilna

In the South (on the right):

  • 23:1 (Automatic) North of Lvov
  • 47:11 (4:1) South of Lvov

I decided I might as well try to clear these units out. Dangerous, but why not?
-----
Edit: Seems I forgot about the enemy LND available, so reduce the Vilva attack to 20:8 (2:1)

Well, mostly successful, but I paid for my mistake in Vilna. I took the city, but it cost me a white print INF and a good MOT.

I present to you the honoured dead, as of the end of Impulse #3:

I left the flags on so you could see what the 2nd Ski Division was doing.

In the Baltics, Latvia has joined Lithuania as liberated-nations-in-waiting. The Russian border is now just over the horizon. Vilna didn't work as planned, but it hopefully opens up that "Breathing Room" all my soldiers keep mumbling about. [;)]

And, in the South, the Panzers are ready to roll forward on Rundstedt's orders. Assuming I don't get blocked yet again. There's still an O-chit just waiting to be used . . . will it be used to break the river line? We shall see . . .[:D]

In Barbarossa he has to put 10 corps at or very close to the Rumanian border and 10 close to the German/Polish border. The Polish border is standard. The Rumanian isn't. There are a couple of units to far to the west. Well. He got punished for that...
