Centuur -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/13/2011 1:08:58 PM)

It look likes it all will depend how long the fine weather holds. Well. I'll see in two weeks time how things have progressed, since I'm going on holiday tomorrow...

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/13/2011 1:22:26 PM)

Enjoy your holiday!

peskpesk -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/13/2011 5:51:53 PM)

Since the mighty German only needs more 4 cites to win and Kursk and Bryansik are already in grave danger. I can only see: Bad weather, Russian hero cites or some last minute brilliant counter strike that might stop them. Barbarossa scenario is Hard for the Russians.

If you retook this picture using lower resolution for the units, the numbers would be easier to read.

That's why they pay you the big bucks, eh? [:)]

Orm -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 10:11:12 AM)

I decide to try to resupply my 2nd Guards Garrison located in Kalinin. Germany was not so fond of that so there was an air combat. But fortunately fo me the air transport cleared and reorganized the garrison.

Orm -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 10:17:32 AM)

I did not like how how things looked. Finding no decent defence line without surrendering to many cities. Finding no nice counterattacks that I could make without leaving myself open to encirclement.

In the end I decided to chance on bad weather. It is 60% chance for bad weather after all. So I make a forward defence but around potential hero cities. But I do feel like I must have bad weather for this to work. I do not like to play this way but I see no other way to have a chance to win...

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 10:51:29 AM)

If you wondered why Orm talked so much about the weather, it's because he knew something that has not been revealed yet: I got lucky, indeed!

This is the Weather roll form, and also a look at the Global Map on its weather setting. All of that bright yellow means clear skies and a late autumn.
-----
Edit: Sadly, Orm tells me that autumn has already begun not too far north of where he lives. I'll bet he'd like to swap this weather roll for the real thing.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 12:23:30 PM)

I need to really take advantage of the good weather, so I plan 2 Ground Strikes, one on Kursk, and another attempt to nail Zhukov, this time stacked with 2 other units in Bryansk. I sent my best fighter to defend my bombers at Kursk, since I can't intercept the inevetible Russian interception there.

Even though the odds are +3/-3 in my favor, I send the lonely I-16 on Orm's behalf to defend Kursk. He has to do what he can to keep me from capturing the city. This time I am again lucky, shooting the pilot right out of his cockpit:

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 12:26:55 PM)

And then I am unlucky. I am guessing that drinking is rampant among my bomber pilots. All game, I haven't had a really nice Ground Strike. There go my plans to attack Kursk this impulse. [:(]

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 12:29:51 PM)

The other strike, which could not be intercepted, again only nailed 1 of 3 units in the hex, but this time it was Zhukov! This guy earns himself a medal!

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 2:25:37 PM)

I decided to make 4 attacks in the Fine impulse, possibly my last chance at regular odds ratios. It seemed time to take back Pskov; before defensive Ground Support, this was a 5:1 attack.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 2:30:48 PM)

Between Bryansk and Kursk, I decided to try to really make a hole in the lines, instead of attempting to take one of the cities just yet. That attack had a very good shot at being 7:1, before Defensive Ground Support (55:8 +1).

South of Kursk, I'm trying to round the corner. This attack began as a 5:1 +2 (39.5:7) with a 70% chance for 6:1.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 2:35:21 PM)

And my last attack of the impulse is nominated for the "Stupid Move of the Game" award. This was a 3:1, with the goal being to discourage Orm from using one of his bombers for another attack. Well, he surprised me by using all of his available bombers for Ground Support, turning this into a lame 3:2 Assault. Who knows, I could get lucky . . .

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 2:40:38 PM)

So, here are the final odds:

Pskov is 3:1
North of Kursk, it's 3:1 +1, with a 2 in 3 chance of 4:1 +1
South of Kursk, it's 3:1 +2, with ajust about a 60% chance of 4:1 +2
And that ugly Krasnodar attack is, of course, 3:2

Picture taken at Land Combat Resolution of Axis impulse #3, Sep/Oct 1941 (Turn 3 of 5)

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 3:01:09 PM)

And the results:

I rolled a '7' at Pskov. I really would have preferred a '6' or an '8', either of which would not have forced me to destroy a unit. The Munich Militia is too far from home to do any good as a reinforcement, so the Minsk Militia gets destroyed. It's a Victory city changing hands, so I'm happy. [:)]

In the attacks near Kursk, I won both Fractional Odds rolls, but then rolled a '3' in the northern attack, and a '4' in the southern attack. These were modified to '4' and '6', respectively. That means I only killed off 1 unit up north, gaining no ground, and merely Shattered the disorganized Motorized Army in the south, though I at least got the Breakthrough.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 3:12:00 PM)

And, finally, that dreaded Krasnodar attack . . .

. . . is where I finally did get the dice on my side, rolling an '8' and keeping both attackers alive! I guess the spoils do go to the daring. [;)]

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 3:25:50 PM)

Before ending the impulse, it was time for some housekeeping. I rebased 2 more bombers to the front lines (I intended to rebase a fighter, but with no enemy bombers left right now, I'll get by without it).

I'm starting to worry about Partisans, with all of those units disorganized in that botched attack at the center, so I had Mannerheim reorganize the SS Mechanized Corps that just took Pskov. In the south I took a slight risk, using up Rundstedt. He reorganized the XLI Armor Corps in I railed to Kharkov earlier, and also a nearby stack, hopefully adding some flexibility to future plans.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 3:41:13 PM)

Up near Murmansk, I took advantage of the good weather this impulse to advance toward the city. Yes, behind those factories is a city -- this has been reported as a visual bug. I figure that I might not get to Murmansk, but Orm will have to place a defending reinforcement with the Helsinki Militia nearby. That's one less unit on the main battle lines down south.

Red Prince -> RE: A look at Barbarossa. (8/14/2011 3:46:24 PM)

I actually pulled back a little on the Northern Front. With my back-side now secured, it's time to focus on getting just a few more Victory cities. That is going to happen in the south, not here.

And possibly the heroes of the entire game, here in Krasnodar. [sm=happy0065.gif] Because of these guys, I now need only 1 more Victory city for a draw (22-20, currently), with a lot of space in front of them.

Let's change that trophy to "Luckiest Corps on Earth" shall we?

In an effort to keep more cities from enemy control the crumbling Soviet front has been reduced to hero cities. If only there were heroes and hold out in the cities...
