As I understand it, a port attack will reduce coastal guns along with the port itself. How can I know how many coastal guns are still there after the attack (considering fog of war)?

Considering Fog of War, you can't know.

as T said you wouldn't know, you would have to Recon the hell out of it before/after the attack and even then you can't know exactly which/how many guns are destroyed.

Assuming you can recon that is.

Coastwatcher's?

YankeeAirRat -> RE: Coastal Guns (9/18/2011 4:51:56 AM)

You only get Coastwatchers to make call outs for ships in the game. The report you get from them isn't designed to report on airfields, beaches, ports or enemy strong points in general. Which is also something that holds true to how they operated in real life. During the war most Coastwatcher units used locals to report on ship and aircraft movements, they also made it a rule to never ever come close to an enemy strong point like a base. So to do your recon your would have to dedicate specialized recon aircraft to be constantly scouting the base almost daily and it would be adviseable to use numerous different recon units to do this scouting.

Agree with other comments posted.

I'd also add that CD guns are pretty resilient, particularly if the enemy island / port is in supply and has some downtime to put disrupted CDs back into action.

You've really got to bomb the **** out of the port. Bomb it some more. Then bomb it again. Maybe a naval bombardment or two. Then it's time for more port bombing. No let up, no reprieve. Bomb it until you're getting bored. Bomb the airfield too, as that will lower available supply over time.

Thanks guys!

And the best way to deal with coastal guns is to avoid them all together. If at all possible, land at a more lightly defended base within marching distance of the place you want to capture. Don't land in bases without even a dot base, wilderness hexes do not make for good landings...takes to long to unload and things tend to go badly (lots of ops losses with your troops).

The easiest way to check their existence is to send bombardment TF. You will see exactly how many guns are shoting back, and from which units.

You should of course set range to be within enemy guns range.

I would not count, that air bombardent will do anything useful, except disabling lots of squads, destroying some supply, and stopping fort building.

A good way to find out if the port is mined too![:D]

Not sure where I looked, but I had an old Save file from someone with a 1943 japanese setup showing where all the Forts and coast gun emplacements were, assuming the Japanese player doesn't move them of course (not sure if they can be I dont remember)

Anyhow I loaded his save file and wrote down the locations of all the Japanese gun emplacements, honestly I would ignore them as best as you can.

Bombardment can damage battleships easily and cause months to fix, and airpower is shaky at best trying to knock out all the guns.

Now here's a trick - during my game one of the Islands, Wotje or Maleolap I used for target practice for SBD's and TBM's on the port (Coast guns), quite nice targets since they take forever to destroy completely (building up your pilots in the process).

I think I landed at Tarawa then used air power to work my way north/southwest towards Guadalcanal.

If you want I can give you the locations for all the Coastal guns

Inqistor has a good idea. I tried it and it brings up the info I was looking for. But it might be better to just send a xxAK to the enemy base and there you are, no BB's are damaged either. War is all hell.

oldman45 -> RE: Coastal Guns (9/22/2011 6:41:39 PM)

I can see the message traffic to the AK now....

"After you unload in Suva, head to Tulagi and see if you get shot at". "Include in your report type and number of guns." "Prior to your departure from Suva report the name and number of crew onboard so we can notify next of kin"

Well, the only sure thing you get from such operation is if there are still CD guns operational, as whole hex tend to use all its guns with long enough range to shot.

It is a long time, since I have seen TF accidentaly wandering into CD hex, but I am not sure it will generate Combat Report. You will just see information "CD Guns open fire on enemy TF", and will see your xAK sunk [:D]

But that will surely show, that CD guns are still present [:D][:D][:D]
