obvert -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/3/2013 11:15:24 AM)

Last night I travelled out with a group of my colleagues to attend the funeral of the wife of another teacher in our department. I've known him for six years, and this was a tough event. She was 45, this was her third bout with cancer, and they have a ten year old son.

It was also amazing to hear about her life and see the incredible love between the three of them and within their family. Truly heart-wrenching and affirming. Being with people in these circumstances, coming together to support each other, brings everything else into perspective. Not something any of us enjoy, but something that will make our connections stronger and deeper going forward.

Can imagine it would be obvert. As you say those events put things in perspective!

Hey dude, I only pop into your AAR on occasion, but just wanted to commend you for your stick-to-it-ive-ness. The end game for the Japanese isn't for the timid, but you're handling it well into March 1945.

Sorry to hear about your friend. These events are really what make us.

Yes. Thanks guys.

This also made me feel a bit stronger about the idea of having kids. My fiancé is definitely getting the early 30s itch! We're planning for a late summer wedding next year, and getting a family started might come soon after.

The father of the deceased remarked about his daughter, "While we're busy teaching our children about life, they are teaching us what life is about." That got me a bit.

paullus99 -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/3/2013 2:43:34 PM)

Obvert - kids will change your life. My two boys are absolutely amazing - and yes, they are teaching me as much as I can teach them.....don't wait till you are "ready" because you'll never be - the experience is totally worth it.

Erik, I share your feelings. Connections with other human beings can never be strong enough. Life is just that...connections. We're all bound together and a life spent alone will be just misery.
Unfortunately we all feel the real need to have stronger connections when life kicks you in the butt... which, unfortunately, is something that happens more often than not. We should all remind ourselves that seeds must be planted in order to see a plant in the future...so even when we do not feel the "need", we should always work on our relationships (friendships, love life, connections etc...).

BTW, talking about more "easy" stuff, I confirm you i'll be in London starting from Dec 5th to 8th with VAlentina. We'll be staying at the Millennium in Grosvenor square (think it's close to the US Embassy). Valentina wants to get back to Convent Garden just like last year, so, if you are around, we could arrange for a coffea or a drink (and this time you'll be my guest!).

Think i'll be in the city center (wandering around in Mayfair, Knightbrigde, Convent Garden and the usual stuff) on Friday, while on Saturday I'd like to see Shoredicth and the east end (never seen the Shard Tower yet) and possibly the mnearby market (gainsborough or something like that...a strange name anyway).

I've booked all the restaurants pretty late at night, so i'll be very flexible for times and meeting places.

I agree! I've been doing just that today. Touching base with people, making sure those links are there and tended regularly!

That's great about your visit. I could meet at Covent Garden again, and even better on Saturday I live in the East (near Old Street), so I could easily meet you around Shoreditch. The market is Borough Market near London Bridge and the Shard. Great place full of amazing foods from everywhere!

I'll send a note with some ideas for your Eastern walk. Lots of great shops around and some awesome foods!

YEs, Saturday would be perfect in the east end! Been in London some 20 times but I admit with shame I've never been in that area[:-][:-][:-]
Food from everywhere? Perfect!
I've already booked a Chinese restaurant in Soho (Hakkadan or something like that) and a Islandinian (sp?) one ("texture" I think it's called) at Marble Arch. I love to try strange food from everywhere...here in Italy it's not that easy to find (good) ethnic food!

We'll keep on touch by email as usual!

Myself and my wife are in the same situation. I'm 33 and she's coming up to 30. I certainly don't have the 'itch' and neither of us is sure what's best as we want the best of all worlds. She has started to talk more recently about kids though so who knows![;)]

catwhoorg -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/3/2013 7:47:50 PM)

I'm an older parent (not by choice, we had lots of issues getting a baby to term), and so far it has been a fantastic experience for us.

If anyone in their 30's is on the fence, my sole advice is to make sure you make your mind up, before age makes the choice for you. Either way doesn't matter, but make sure its your choice and affirm that choice.

KenchiSulla -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/3/2013 8:40:28 PM)

I understand where catwhoorg is coming from... If you are blessed with children your life will never be the same.. It's awesome (except for the moments they wake you up in the middle of the night or after they made a drawing on the floor....)

Age 32 seems to be the threshold between thinking about it and driving toward it in my experience. [;)]

Before Rachel i dated a few others in their early 30s and it was always around 32 when the combination of hormones and life choices funnelled into serious discussions about having a family.

I'm lucky now that we're on the same page, that I am older at 42 and feel confident in my profession and our goals so that it's an easier decision.

I agree. I'm in my 40s now and it seems like time to decide, and although it's scary, I'm wanting to have kids now.

Lokasenna -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/3/2013 10:55:06 PM)

I'm getting this figure from Bullwinkle and not caring to verify as it sounds about right, but he tells me age 28 (for women) is about when female fertility either peaks or starts to fall off more dramatically. Late 30s is pretty hard to have a kid, but not impossible. Especially with IVF these days (I wonder how much more prevalent IVF is in America, with our absurd work culture, than it is in Europe). And of course there are stories of women in their 50s getting pregnant, but that's pretty rare.

FWIW, my parents had me at 28, and their last at 32. However, my uncle didn't start having kids until mid-40s. I believe it took them a really long time to get pregnant once they started trying.

Sadly, no. Though perhaps I should have finished fixing up my old Jeep in high school, then done this to it.

Maybe you're seeing chalkboard Porches. The paint is very flat, obviously. I actually kind of like the way it looks, even without chalk on it.

obvert -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/5/2013 2:11:14 PM)

17 - 18 March 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

STRAT BOMBING: Both Canton and Shanghai get the treatment. HI is the target, and in spite of NF present, almost all is knocked out for maybe 4-5 B-29 losses. On the night we lose 16 NF.

CHINA: Troops are getting hit near Paoshan almost daily by what looks like 300+ 4Es. I guess he's committed to this area breaking through. It might, after long enough, but these planes are pretty valuable to use in this role at this pint in game. I think there is a focus on China now, which is probably good for the Japanese.

At Nanning troops are beginning to recover in spite of losses to continuing air strikes from the other big group of 4Es. Some of the reserves that were at Liuchow and Kukong are railing toward Kweiyang as the Chinese advance. Moving those troops up could be a feint, but I kind of have to imagine it's real. Would the Allies be so concentrated on ruining the troops in the mountains though if they were confident in the ability of the Chinese to push through?

If the Chinese in fact somehow have supply the 2.5k AV of IJA at Kweiyang could be crushed. If not the Chinese could cross the river and lose a chuck of troops. Or, they could threaten to move continually while other stuff happens to the East.

My reserve in China is three divisions that are in transport now. I also have a few building up strength along the NE coast after arriving recently. There are another 1k AV of brigades at Shanghai. I've decided to dispatch a few more of these to the center to make sure bases like Kukong, Liuchow and Kweilin have a presence of troops that might hold off a small assault, or to stop a move cross country somewhere until other troops could get in range. The Allies have enough to break through almost any spot in China given time, but time is what they don't want to take, I'm sure.

HOME ISLANDS: The Allied fleet has moved up again to around Okinawa. I stop all bombing of Naha. This prompts the opening of the fields and the appearance of 350+ fighters. It's still a bit out on a limb there, so I might look to bombard. We'll see what opportunities arise. Only fast BB/CA will be used for now to ensure a quick getaway. I'll move to the front of Formosa to give a look, anyway. It's interesting, this cat and mouse.

Big supply moved out throwing several cities on the HI into the red! Bad. Have to do it though.

Accidentally left one TF with retreat to base orders and it moved right into the path of the oncoming Allied CVs. Lost some great ships. For nothing. Yuck. I'm just not as good at being careful in this part of the game. It really is tough when there is no real agency to the moves Japan is able to make. Everything ends up seeming futile, so turns are done quickly and much less thoroughly than before. I'm also partially influenced by my opponent's need to finish the game before the baby comes. I really only have time for one thorough turn a day, but we've been doing two. Usually one good one and one not so good from me. I don't like playing this way, but I respect his desire to get it done soon, and I don't want to just roll over, so this is the compromise. I'm sure he's not complaining when a fat TF rolls into his search zone though! [;)]

Reinforcements: Soon a whole slew of training units arrive, but if they are like the usual ones I have so far, they are only training and can't be used to strike or fly CAP. This could be a problem. At the same time I lose about 4-5 fighter groups.

At this point all groups previously training are being upgraded to combat units, and only the training groups are going to be training. Sam pools are therefore going to run low for a bit, as will Frank 'r' pools.

It's a bit nostalgic now losing ships like these. They'e been such a big part of how I chose to play the game, and now they're quickly disappearing. About three more of the big AVs are awaiting eventual destruction at Singers. I contemplated sending them raining in the deep Indian Ocean for fun. The Jake units used to be good against merchants, but now they just fall to flak quickly.

I wonder if it's worth moving these training groups forward to bases that might draw attention away from more vital targets? If Jocke sees a large number of aircraft at a base maybe the urge to hit it will be too tempting.

I hope Jocke's game with me isn't taking away from the time you too have allotted to this one? Is Jocke's reasoning to rush your game because two games and two babies will be too much? I'd rather you two finish this game and use the time you need to complete turns properly. I'll let Jocke know he should make sure you two finish and our game should be lower priority. I think it is already though. [:D]

Also, about the CAP, training units will engage in combat if enemy units attack nearby. I think it is a die roll, the manual says something about it. I've had it happen in my games - air attacks on Victoria Point saw training planes from Bangkok join the fray at one time.

There might be a tactic of lots of crap planes and pilots getting in the way of some bombers, or at least disrupting their flight a bit.

It's not the two games, it's the turns vs days to finish ours that are the issue. At 2 a day for the next 3 months, that's 6 months in game, or up to August. We'll likely miss a week or so at Christmas. Another in February, due to travel. Every week something comes up where we have a few days with only 1 turn. So it might be more like 1.5 a day, which puts us very close to baby time. Only 4.5 months i name, or mid-June in 3 months.

I think baby is due in April? So we'd then by stuck if by some amazing turn of luck the Japanese side didn't collapse by historical time frame. I simply can't do any more turns than I'm already doing, and Jocke's weekly schedule only has certain windows for turns as well.

As for the training units I don't know if that would be a good thing. They are 10 planes each, and there are like 30 of them, so it doesn't even add up to so many actual airframes. Just a lot of pilots trained.

What is strange is losing something like 250-300 fighters in withdrawals (plus some bomber groups) in the next few months??? What is that about? Sure my area is quickly collapsing, but that does' mean I can't fly a bunch of planes over the HI. I haven't had time to organize this stuff in a while, but I'll know more soon and report on what it means.

Yes, it definitely happens, and this is also a worry. I will just bleed crap planes and crap pilots while they try to engage P-47N groups with 80 exp pilots!!! Or several hundred B-24s!

Not sure I need that in the HI, but maybe I'll be proven wrong.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Wild Sheep Chase (12/5/2013 8:03:10 PM)

I'd forgotten about the training units sometimes reacting as CAP. What if you set them to sweep rather than escort? If the units are that small it won't make a blip anyway as you mentioned. It was just an idea to make them draw fire somehow while taking some heat off your main defence.

I never thought to set them at sweep. Might work well to keep them out of combat as they'll be A6M2, Nates and Oscar Ic mostly.

I guess they could offer deceptive protection for various bases in the back lines as well, making it seem there are fighters to protect against non-escorted raids.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: A lot moving toward the area near Formosa now. One hits the DD Michishio, sinking it. We also sink the Boarfish.

STRAT BOMBING: The Allies got for Shanghai and Canton, only losing a few planes.

CHINA: The troops in the mountains and the troops at Nanning are still getting the business from the Allied 4Es. Both are hanging in here. At least the AA fought back and got 4-5 4E today. I'll be interested to see if the Allies try either river crossing soon. It looks like some troops at least are moving around along the coast in the East. I'll need to shore up the inner defenses and provide some potential blocks to the West of the Canton/Hong Kong area.

The Chinese have reached one hex from Kweiyang. Another potential river crossing. Chinese troops don't usually do to well with these into heavy fortifications. The base has level 6 forts in a +2 territory. Also there has been no bombing here, so that makes me think this is mostly a feint. Of course if the bombing starts I'd only have a few days to cover, so I'll have to leave some troops here for now. At least until the surprise I'm cooking up goes forward. [;)]

HOME ISLANDS: A bombardment force went in to Naha on the 20th, and made it as the Allies had vacated the area. It put a decent hit on the fields but no fighters remained at the base. Only 1 Cat destroyed. Also sunk a few PTs.

This will be interesting moving forward. Will this make the Allies jumpy about BB appearing in range?

The little dot near Kweiyang? Pretty innocuous right? Well, it's almost a million Chinese troops!

However, there is a call IJA force moving behind them. I don't think they've been reconed and they'll move behind the Chinese in three days. There are only 3 units and ~10k troops at Chungking according to overflights. Do we dare the impossible and cross to try to capture the city? [:D]

A massive load of 50k supply just landed, so hopefully that will fix some red and yellow flagged situations around the area.

I will be observing how supply washes in and fills gaps. In my limited experience, about 20K supply stays at the port of origin .. no matter how much the supply the port is set for ..

Notice the port being used here. Spot the TF.

Dropping supply at Shanghai earlier in game would send it shooting up to the farthest reaches of China in a few turns. Now, well, it won't be so easy. 20k supply hasn't stayed at Shanghai as it already had 20k and is at around 22k after the first drop off. The second is somewhat upstream and should get to needy bases more quickly.
