Late morning tithe... beautiful sunny morning here, and is 18C already, but hope the wind doesn't pick-up again. [sm=innocent0001.gif]

Tithe!

BrucePowers -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/29/2012 11:10:25 PM)

Ok. Just back from seeing Red Tails. First impression, the CGI battle scenes were over the top, not as bad as in a couple of other movies I've seen but that is my opinion. The story line was ok, not great but ok. One of my biggest complaints, not every airplane that goes down explodes in a big fireball before going down. This was a war film not a love story. There was one but it was not over done. I paid matinee price for the film and thought I got my money's worth.

Almost certainly one of the Kriegsmarine merchant raiders would qualify for that.

The Atlantis, for example, sailed from Germany on March 11, 1940 and was sunk on November 22, 1941. That's just over 18 months at sea.

T: Didn't she put in for stores, food, fuel or ammunition during the 18 month voyage?

Hey Admiral Mitscher,

I know you're unlikely to get this note in a timely fashion, but keep your head down over there, will ya? Good luck and Godspeed.

Nope. Her replenishment came mostly from at-sea rendezvous with German supply ships, with a smaller percentage taken from ships she stopped. That's why merchant raiders would never sink ships outright.

Thank you. [:)]

Could a US ship have spent more time at sea in a single cruise by beeing replenished at sea?

I'm sure they could have, but the USN was much more concerned about the mental health of the crew than many other nations, mostly because they could afford to be. The USN became the most experienced at underway replenishment by the end of the war.

No US ship would stay at sea for that long. Even the fast carrier task forces rotated back to forward anchorages, like Ulithi.

Thanks for info Bruce!

BTW, is the air combats in movie usual Hollywood (or "History Channel") Science Fiction not related to physics and history?

Treetop64 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/30/2012 5:59:02 PM)

Morning, Threadites.

Just got back from Florida. Pretty nice place to be during winter.

Schanilec -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/30/2012 6:13:13 PM)

Great weekend for hockey. Sioux swepted the U of W Badger 5-3; 4-2. And moved to 4th place in the standings. And what happened to the U. of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Michigan Tech. took them for 3 out of 4 points. Ouch. I saw the the Gopher's snuck past SCSU Huskies for a sweep. So again we gain no ground and still 8 points back. No Sioux hockey this coming weekend. But the Gopher's will be in Denver and can be seen on NBCSN Friday night. And FSSN both nights.

Interesting turn of phrase..."sneaking" past an opponent for a "sweep". Just like 'barely, just barely becoming champion of the world." [:'(]

Schanilec -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/30/2012 6:44:06 PM)

Well they were pretty tight games.[:'(]

Schanilec -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/30/2012 6:58:01 PM)

And the Vikings. I was usually so happy after the first half when they had a good lead. To the end of the game shaking my head in disbelief. How, how, how could they lose.[X(]
