[:'(] IIRC, on the eastern seaboard of the US, we call the Intracoastal Waterway "the ditch". The IW is a slightly inland route for barges and pleasure craft that runs from Massachusetts to Texas. In some areas it uses existing rivers, inlets, bays and sounds and in other areas it is a canal tahat was dug to connect those existing bodies of water. It basically allows smaller craft to avoid sailing in the more dangerous open Atlantic Ocean (the Outer Banks of North Carolina aren't known as "the Graveyard of the Atlantic" for nothing! More useless information for those who like to clutter their minds...
