nashvillen -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 5:46:11 PM)

There is some Sys and Flot damage there, I would guess...

Did they have Japanese Damage control?

Seriously, praying for all involved.

Admiral Mitscher -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 6:41:03 PM)

Boy I bet there is a story here....

E.g. Captain and night watch all drunk, or fifth Officer takes wrong turn. [X(]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 6:50:45 PM)

Well, the captain has been arrested on charges of manslaughter and leaving his ship before all passengers were evacuated.

The last picture shows a rock in the hull - it got there from initial impact (i.e. it lodged there) - we can only imagine how 100.000+ ton ship hits a underwater rock... [X(]

Which makes One wonder what Cruise Ship Captains are hired for now, for their seamanship, or as a luxury hotel manager? [&:]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 7:40:43 PM)

It's ridiculous to have such a big ship that close to shore. 114,500 tons!

vettim89 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 7:54:15 PM)

Interesting enough I have been doing some research for my Dogs of War AAR and came across an artical on how modern Cruise ships are dangerously top heavy. The above pictures certainly point that fact out now don't they? Also, the initial article I read said the ship hit a sand bar. That is the biggest grain of sand I have ever seen in my life.

A few years back another cruise ship went down off South Africa. It was pointed out that these ships have essentially two crews: one for sailing and one for passenger accomadation. In the South Africa incident the two crews didn't even work for the same company. The ship's crew worked for the owner and the hospitality crew worked for the cruise company that had charted the ship.

As awful as this situation is, it is a Godsend that it happened in shallow waters. I the ship had capsized completely, the loss of life would have been far worse.

JWE -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 9:08:42 PM)

Had a really good ride today. Our HOG group was Marshals at a veterans parade. Just sit and salute and keep wiping the tears from your face. Never knew how many Harley bikers are not just simple veterans, but them as gots 25+ years in. Boy, oh boy, I'm so liking hanging out with these people.

Skyros -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (1/15/2012 9:13:49 PM)

Why did it roll onto the opposite side. I would have assumed that she would have rolled towards the tear in her hull since that's where the water entered and would have caused the initial list to that side.

Probably poor compartmentalization or they did not get the doors closed in time.

Or possibly a free-surface induced roll.

Hi Leo.

Yeah, you would think that. That's what physics says, but ships are bound by lots of rules that make things kinda counter-intuitive. It all started in Florida back in the 1950s, when ships coming up from Central America would run aground on the "everywhere" bars. Then California passed their own laws to keep Pac Rim ships off their rocks. Then the US passed laws just like California, and the Euro Zone hopped in big time.

Any ship that carries passengers, as a primary or class 2 function, must, simply must, have certain and specific automatic responses to either a declared emergency or a preset lateral vector (on a time base) defined as an "event".

Costa Concordia had a totally whacko metacenter, and as soon as the Captain (or whoever) pushed the panic button, the computer noted the list towards the (big) hole, and automatically counter flooded (according to law). Since the Port side hole was pretty big, and the "tippy" vector was pretty strong, the computer opened every single Starboard side port. It don't take much with that amount of metacenter.

Skipper was a serious asshole, but the ship did exactly what the law said it should do.

It was a Viking sand bar.

SGH = Sand Growth Hormone.

This cruise ship is from the "Too Big To Fail" school of maritime architecture, which brough us such timeless classics as the Titanic, the Yamato and the Exxon Valdez.

Thanks John (but it wasn't me writing the above - it was Ray "Skyros")!

BTW, some pics from italiam Sky News site (captions are translated) - posted at main WitP-AE forum:

According to a first reconstruction of the accident, the ship would hit between 21.20 and 21.40 on 13 January a group of rocks called 'The girls' that are located about 500 meters from the port:

[image]http://m.sky.it/s1/511/4609/218924609/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

The huge 70-meter gash on the side of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, sank near the island of Giglio:

[image]http://m.sky.it/s2/511/6928/267736928/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

According to a source familiar with the investigation technique, the Costa Concordia was following a 'wrong route, should not be impacted at the point where the rock':

[image]http://m.sky.it/s2/511/1791/2065361791/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

The commander of the Costa Concordia defended himself saying that the ship was traveling on a tourist route allowed:

[image]http://m.sky.it/s2/511/8784/1771958784/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

The ship, which is resting on its side and resting on the bottom, has a gash on the left side along at least 70 meters and an inclination of over 80 degrees in the opposite direction:

[image]http://m.sky.it/s1/511/5777/1478555777/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

One of the rocks surrounding the island of Giglio, similar to hit the Costa Concordia. The impact the rock has remained stuck in the hull:

[image]http://m.sky.it/s2/511/6756/598346756/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

According to the prefect, there is also the problem of 'avoid fuel spills at sea. Tanks in the ship there are 2380 tons of diesel, if you can not ensure 'risking environmental disaster':

[image]http://m.sky.it/s1/511/742/11540742/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

Violent in the collision with the seabed, Concordia has literally pulled a rock that has remained stuck in the hole that opened on the hull of the ship:

[image]http://m.sky.it/s1/511/3749/304943749/tnsc--1197406263.jpg[/image]

The Costa Concordia, tilted 80 degrees on the seabed near the port of Giglio Island :

Well, seems Il Capitano was observed drinking in the ship's bar before the grounding. If we assume this to be true, that's a big NO! right there.
