Dang, you just nailed it. I couldn't figure out why I liked Matrix so much at first, but now it clear that it gives me hobby store nostalgia, in a very good way!

In my opinion gaming has been dumbed down massively over the past few years, just like music, film and TV [:D]

So yeah I'm okay with paying what I did for games by a company that fills a niche, I was just worried about new customers not biting.

QFT. And honestly it's past several years. It's been going on for a while.

I personally have had zero problems with DWs price; Excellent game and small developer that I feel good supporting. There are not that many genuinely good 4Xs around these days.

Also, as a comparison: I bought Forza 4s LCE. That's about 100€ + pretty much all the DLC car-packs I'm going to buy in the future. Funny thing: I don't have problem with this either as I'm carnut of some degree.
It all just comes down to personal tastes and relativity.

Worth every penny and then some. Yes, the original has been out quite awhile now, and it is still being patched/upgraded. 95% of the games out there quit being supported within a year or faster.

I pay the higher price for games I like to support the devs/publishers so they continue making great games. I am in complete agreement - Matrix Games products are First Class designs; support is immediately available through the forums and the game developers continue to support and patch their games far beyond what is the accepted norm in the gaming world.

I have nine Matrix titles. War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition probably takes up 90 percent of my gaming time. Released in July of 2009, the game still receives exceptional support from the Developers, modders and forum fans. It was a top notch game, plus dev and forum support that kept me hanging in there long before I had a clue as to how to play this very complex game. That is pretty remarkable.

I have the first two of the Distant World series, and shall shortly purchase and download Legends. Quality is most important; the price irrelevant, Matrix has proven itself to be Honorable in it's business practices and enjoys my full trust and confidence. I know I wont be disappointed.

I do agree on a lower price for a bundle, £45 for DW and ROTS would be better with the price of L being £20 sold on its own or £15 if bought with the DW ROTS bundle.

Had a look on Amazon.co.uk and it cant get any worse than this [:D]

It really is personal choice, as Erik says above. I can only speak regarding U.S. pricing, but I consider DW with the expansions as the WitE of space strategy games. So I feel compelled to buy the third game at $20 U.S. as an investment in a product I will be playing for years. It is at the top of the genre, IMO, so I can justify it. Especially as SotS2 did not come out so well.

That's the point. But the price is quite high for first time buyers. You have to acknowledge that these people are taking risks because it's their first time in the series. If they find out they don't like it then it's a lot of money wasted. And don't ever justify by saying "no one will regret buying this game because it's good" as people have different tastes.

I completely agree, Jomni. Notice I said "compelled to buy." I didn't take the plunge yet. And that's just $20. The E.U. prices are ridiculous and the bundle situation makes it worse.

If I was them, buy the original DW and patch it up to start. Also, pick up Star Ruler when it goes on sale for $5!

So just buy the base game and see if you like it, it's a much smaller "risk". That said, this game has been around quite a while and generated plenty of buzz. I think that with all the youtube gameplay videos, forum discussions, and AAR's you should be able to get a pretty good idea of what you are in for.

Personally I was burned by MoO3, Imperium Galactica 2, Space Empires 5, and Elemental. In every case I made the mistake of not doing my research prior to buying. I did a lot of lurking and reading before I took the $50 plunge for the original Distant Worlds, and I have never regretted it.

This is taking The1Seans quote of $60 for a AA title in the USA above and DW price of $63 and the price of a AAA title on the amazon.co.uk site of £29.99 in the UK and the DW price of £46.

Thanks for putting that in perspective for both UK buyers and us Yanks. I personally emphasized the 5% AAA/DW price point difference because many were judging the US price as unreasonable, when $60 is actually getting to be a pretty common price point here in the states.

The expansions all add lots of nice things, but the Base game is still going to let you see if you like the structure of the game or not. In fact, while playing the original, you could even post here on the forums asking if certain things that you like/dislike have been adressed in the expansions. The community here is more than willing to answer any and all questions as many times as people are willing to ask them.

If you really, really don't like the original DW (patched all the way up, of course!) then chances are you won't like the expansions either. But then again, if the expansions really do add that extra "kick" for you to enjoy the game, that's what the forums are for. :)

Thanks, I've read that one in the past. With much respect to Gabe Newell, niche markets often have interesting effects on marketing laws that apply elsewhere. There's a lot of data we have that directly contradicts the new conventional wisdom in this regard. Counter-strike's potential untapped audience and promotion response is completely different from that of many other games.

If this game 600 roubles - i buy it. MatrixGames take 600 roubles.
Low price kill pirates. When Steam begin sell games on roubles with low price (3 month ago?) i buy ~10 games. But i already play this games at pirate version.

This is not the place to discuss piracy. I accept your point that if you are unable to purchase the game, we will receive no money. However, pricing the game to make it affordable in every market for every budget is not something we can do at this time.

I'd like to echo what a lot of people have said in this thread. I also discovered Distant Worlds via the news on rockpapershotgun.com about the Legends expansion but I couldn't believe the price. £53.68 is insanely high and an immediate turn-off for anybody interested in taking a risk on something that looks interesting, especially considering there's no demo. I've bought a ton of indie games this year and they have on the whole been more enjoyable than "traditional" titles, but they have also been priced in such a way to entice the curious rather than turn them away.

Bought this year alone: AI War + Expansions, Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Bastion, The Binding of Isaac, Dungeons of Dredmor, Frozen Synapse, Jamestown, Magicka, Revenge of the Titans, Space Pirates and Zombies, SpaceChem, StarRuler, Terraria.

Those are just the ones I saw in a quick scan of my currently installed games on steam alone. Every single one of them for less than £15 and some of them for a lot less, sub £5 in some cases. Now, it's obvious that an enormous amount more development time went into a deep, complex game such as Distant Worlds than say, The Binding of Isaac. However, some are comparable, like StarRuler and AI War (which is itself available as a complete package from Matrix Games for less than £20.) I think you're missing a very large amount of potential sales. If the game suddenly showed up on steam as a complete package for £15 I think you'd be surprised at the results. Under those circumstances I wouldn't think twice about grabbing it. How many other people like me (and the others in this thread) are out there?

They use a different model. Maybe less volume on higher prices. It works for them.

Speaking of AI war- the lead designer/developer said on the ARCEN company forum that at sale prices he makes more money than when he sells them at regular prices on Steam. It gets many folks who only would buy an item on sale- they may or may not play the game seriously.

The players here would rather pay more to support the developers and avoid the giveaway model.

Myself, I fall between both camps. I buy and support for those games I really want. I then use the Steam sales to buy items I might not purchase otherwise and who knows I might get something that I like. In a sense it supports those developers who would not see my money at all, otherwise.

And you are the reason 90% of the game companies slap draconian DRM on everything. Matrix feel free to place a time bomb that wipes out pirate copies computer. Just please make sure it does not goof up and clobber me by mistake.

The price on download for the complete set, for me, in Australia was $70 and some cents. That is a premium price and I was reluctant to pay it. But I am now glad that I did. Like many of the posters I have been 'burned' by other games which have failed to live up to their hype and I will never play again after the first week or month. I won't name names but it has happened several times this year, and several times last year, and...

What I want is a quality game and for that I am willing to pay a premium price. Distant Worlds - Legends, at least thus far lives up to this. It is already the best game I have got this century, and may well make the top of my all time list if it keeps going where it seems to be headed...

Having paid a premium price I want, no I demand, a quality product. So far CodeForce and Matrix are more than delivering on their end of the bargain. Is this what you want? I don't know. [8D]
