Watched the first episode of the new series Fargo.

Billy Bob Thornton was suitably malevolent without having to do much, but not too sure that Martin Freeman was the right choice for Lester Nygaard??

Even so - based on the first episode, this is definitely worth continuing with [:)]

I recorded the BBC 3-part drama 37 Days. Watched the first one last night. Wow - very good indeed. Its about the time between the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the outbreak of WWI. Excellent cast, brilliant acting and quality screenplay [&o]

The second series of The Americans ended in the UK last night. As per the first, this second helping was really good entertainment. Glad to see a third series has been commissioned [:)].

Taking its place for me on Saturday evening will be Penny Dreadful and Mr Sloane. The first very dark and sinister judging by the first two episodes. The exquisite Eva Green is perfect for her part [&o] (although was a bit of a potty mouth last night) [X(].

As for Mr Sloane, well this series is at the opposite end of the scale and features the likeable Nick Frost, the always watchable Olivia Coleman, and the hugely talented Peter Seranafowitz?.... I won't even try and spell his surname.

Recommend both [:)]

Me too. Good to see Jack Bauer back in action! Other than that, the usual two, Big Bang Theory and Antique Roadshow.

Fargo comes to and end next Sunday [:(]. What a really good series its been - Billy Bob Thornton in particular [&o]. Started out feeling sorry for hen-pecked Lester Nygaard, but his character gets more unlikeable each episode.....

warspite1 -> RE: What program/film/documentary are you watching now? (6/16/2014 12:33:35 PM)

I caught the back end of a Timewatch program on Captain James Cook. I remember reading a Ladybird Book about him when I was very young - and only really "know" about him from that.

Sounds like this truly great man really lost the plot at the end....

Does anyone know any good books on this life?

warspite1

No? Oh well......

Meantime, continuing to watch Penny Dreadful, 24 and Me Sloane.

Penny Dreadful is no fun - very dark - but last night's episode was interesting. From what I can make out the series is very loosely based on Victorian horror tales - using such as Shelley's Frankenstein and Stoker's Dracula - and weaving them into a new story. A very strong cast here - Sir Timothy Dalton is worth the entrance fee for his voice alone, while Eva Green, with her chiselled features and exquisite cheekbones, is perfect as Vanessa Ives....

24 - just unmissable

Mr Sloane - the perfect antidote to Penny Dreadful. Nick Frost is such a likeable dude. Not a side-splitting comedy, but a fine, light hearted piece of drama.

[&:] All the good series have ended or coming to an end [&:]

Mr Sloane ended tonight. It would be great if they made a second series but the way the first ended, it does not seem likely [:(]

Fargo ended last Sunday - that was hugely enjoyable [:)]

warspite1 -> RE: What program/film/documentary are you watching now? (7/17/2014 7:28:49 PM)

...and now 24 is finished.... No obvious quality replacements in the pipeline [&:]

Mind you, still "enjoying" the riveting Air Crash Investigation - about the only decent documentary left now that history programs seem to have died a death.
