I'm currently (still) on my 1st grand campaign vs USSR AI after more than a year of playing. Yeah, I know, slow player. [:D]

But then I've been writing a rather extensive AAR about my adventures and gaming time unfortunately has become rather precious the last couple of months. Anyway, it's now July 1942 and I'm close to defeating the Red Army. So, since I tremendously enjoyed the game I'm thinking about doing another GC, this time from the Red Army side.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Red Army AI in my campaign, one of the best AIs I've ever seen in a game on such a scale. Thus my question: does the game in its current version 'work' with the German AI attacking? I ask because I know that attacking is always a lot more difficult for the AI than defending.

Check out Larry Fulkerson's pretty AARs.  He has a recent Axis AI GC with beta 1.05, and I recall at least one earlier try.  Seems it is attacking pretty decently, and actually makes impressive progress in the center.  Numberwise it doesn't kill itself on the offensive, and seems not to expose own units ahead of the MBL.  The one area where is appears to be somewhat slow is in the south, though.  Not sure it is because Larry is putting up a very careful defense or whether AI behaves too conservative?  As AI doesn't do the Lvov opening, a human player has a lot more forces at his avail to put up a fight and delay AGS. Larry might also have send more reinforcements south instead of using them to bolster up the center. Not sure, haven't closely followed it yet.

Yes, the AAR I'm doing is on turn 14 already and my impressions are these:
It's a tense game since I've got the Axis already biased to 110% and the Soviets are 100% and the difference can really be felt on the ground.  I played one game on
"normal" settings and it was obviously a Soviet game since the advance was stopped early and too far west to have done the Axis any good.  No major cities captured,
no industry ( except in Minsk ) was captured.  The Soviets ran over the Axis in the blizzard etc.  With the settings on 110% the game is different.  I'm having to
scramble to contain breakthroughs and even though there are no major pockets I'm loosing Soviet units ( shatter results on combat ).  The center is slowly giving way
and Leningrad is seriously threatened.  The south is pretty much contained except the Axis is forcing me backward exposing the industrial cities to his grasp.  It's a
different game entirely from the first one.  About half a dozen times I thought about giving up the AAR and each time I kept going to see 'what happens next'.  I'm
not sure, entirely sure, that I can hold these Axis guys back.  It's September '41 and the mud turns are going to start appearing, I hope, and the Soviet CV's are
slowly climbing and this game might just turn around in about 3 or 4 turns.  We'll see.  Here's the link to my AAR:

I'm in Sept 43 of a 41GC vs German AI.

Here's the front line trace from the last blizzard turn in Feb 42. 41GC started post latest patch. I am using custom difficulty, me all 100's AI all 120's random weather.

It is challenging because you just can't stop the German before Blizzard. He goes where he wants. If you make it a priority you can hold Leningrad & Moscow against the AI, but only because of such favorable defensive terrain. In the south your only worthwhile terrain feature is the Dnper. IF he gets across that then it is chicken little time.

Don't forget to use the Desna (the major river that flows into the Dnper north of Kiev and runs East-West. I was able to hold a line all through 42 that followed the river lines.


On only your second game I wouldn't crank the AI up that much, and definitely recommend against using the standard difficulty levels that reduce your moral as the Russian player.

Try setting him to 110% and leaving you at 100.

With increased settings it certainly works. I played my first serious GC vs AI Axis with an Axis bias of 125% across the board and 100% for me. During the clear turns of '41 they pulled off a couple of serious encirclements, including one that was almost a copy of the historical Kiev battle, and of the same scale, devastating the entire SW Front. On the first blizzard turn, the front ran more or less on the historical lines, with most exceptions being in Axis favour. During blizzard I pushed them back some, and encircled a number of divisions, but when spring came they were back on the offensive, mostly in the Ukraine. By beginning of '43 I was beginning to push them back, but without being able to pull off anything like Stalingrad. But then I abandoned the game due to patch upgrade.

Harder does not work well with 1.05. I was under a lot of pressure as Soviets in 1.03 but managed to capture Berlin in Mar 45 under the 120/80 setting. I tried that in 1.05 and had to quit in Sept 41 because I had no Soviet units left. So I played it again and just ran east as fast as I could - the Axis were only three hexes further east without my troops in the way! I decided that had to go . . .
