Hi everyone. I got WITE last christmas, it has been my dream game since the War in Russia day. Counters representing divisions, not corps...how awesome! Unfortunately work has been in the way for the past year, with the step learning curve I haven't found the time to learn or play it until recently. I have now played the tutorial (as both sides) and the 3 turn Minsk scenario. My question is: How should I use my air units? Ex: I cannot seem to bomb more then one unit on the first turn, is this because I used to many recons? How do I know when I have used to many recons? It seems I can just go on and on and on with them. When do I move my airbases up (same for army level and higher HQ units)? Is there a way to automate air support? If so do I want it automated? Etc...ect...ect... Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Recons should not affect your ability to bomb units. Try using SHIFT-Right-click when ordering a bombing run. You'll get a list of available bomber and fighter wings, and you can select or de-select the ones you want to participate.

You might want to take this advice with a grain of salt, but I've seen ground units bombing reduce the supplys that a unit has. I've seen the soft factors flag turn from green to a brownish "low" indication. I haven't seen many losses to the Axis from ground bombing but sometimes the strike will cause a handfull of casualties. One time I bombarded the entire front lines Axis units from Leningrad to Rostov and the loss figure to the Axis was something like 500 dead. Yeah, I know, I should have probably used the air resources in another way. Also, in my game against the Axis AI, Elmer likes to park his air bases way way back so my fighters can't reach them. So the closest air bases to mine are those in which recon plane types are in abundance. I'm clobbering a lot of recon planes on the ground but haven't yet gotten the plane types with the range neccessary to take on the Luftwaffe fighters. Those come in the later parts of the war I guess. The PE-8 has the most range of any Soviet plane and can probably reach just about any city target on the map, or at least most of them. But the Soviets can only build like 1 per week or something. I've noticed too that Elmer can rearrange his planes by moving them from one air base to another as the need arrises so that on your second and subsequent strikes on an Axis air base you have more and more intercepting Axis fighters all the time. I've learned to limit my strikes to just the initial one and maybe one more. As it is the Axis gets 50 losses and I get 300. That's the way it's been since the beginning of the game and it's only Sep. '42 in my game now. Maybe conditions will change as the later model planes get deployed.

As Axis player in 1941, I switch off ground support and interdiction and rarely perform any ground bombing except in key situations. The effects of the latter mission seem to be very small. I tried a couple of times the same key battles with preparatory bombing and/or ground support, but the variation was almost purely within the range that the battle results would vary by pure dice rolls without any air component. There were some 50-150 bomber participating, maybe that is insufficient to make a strong showing? Primarily the first two turns Luftwaffe focuses on bombing airfields, and once the returns diminish, all efforts are purely directed towards recon and supplying the spearheads with fuel. With slowing of pace and depth of advances, and restrengthening of Soviet defenses, I usually go back to selective ground bombing. However, I find this air component so abstract that I have the feel to have no control over it. Maybe that is due to having so much control over it in the Pacific War brother of WitE.

Air units key role is interdiction, followed by ground support to make up for the russian artillery advantage. try a learning scenario soetime with your planes intact then try again with all air units in reserve. the difference is astounding. Air units can kill enemy generals by bombing headquarters if you can hit them hard enough before attacking the default leader appointed by ai could very sabotage his own forces. A large concententration of stukas hitting an enemy unit can potentially weaken it enough to allow a hasty or let you use less units. german airstrikes kill 100 - 300 enemy troops 2-3 good hits can wreck an enemy unit strongly entrenched or cross river. dont underestimate recon it directly affects combat with the spotting bonus - land recon units suffer high attrition so flood an area youre hitting with prepared attacks or even hasty to get that bonus. interdiction is crucial vs russians, the numbers are tight, units wear out fast so the russians need to rotate in - cant say how many times my hits have failed due to german interdiction. itll stop russians from clossing a pocket or making a retreat. Dont neglect strategic bombing. im not sure how the code works , but it seems that if you bomb a city and damage industry before it rails out youll delay that factory resuming production in a new location hit moscow, leningrad, kharkov, stalino and voronezh as well as mariopul hard. Hitting the ports at oddessa and leningrad as well as the kurland if you cant reach, hango to stop reinforcement. lots of great targets for the fly boys. be aware of where your stukas are at all times annd keep em packed into the attack zones.

3. July 1941, few days since The Operation Barbarossa started Göring: Hows it going? IV Fliegerkorps HQ: Herr Göring, our bombing fleet just came back home. We have some difficulties here. Looks like those russian bi-planes are thougher than English Spitfires... We attacked with 82 Fighters and 68 Bombers... Göring: Sounds good strike, you guys destroyed a lot!? IV Fliegerkorps HQ: ... Actually we killed 20 man in ground and 1 plane. In air we managed to kill 13 Bi-planes and few LaGG-3 and one bomber... but we lost 3 fighter and 15 bombers... Göring: WTF Are you saying that our modern planes cant beat Russian absolete planes? ... Göring: Hows it going at VIII? VIII Fliegerkorps HQ: We maded fighter sweep to the target as ordered! Göring: and? VIII Fliegerkorps HQ: cough...coughwelostcough... Göring: WHAT? VIII Fliegerkorps HQ: Herr Marshall, Russians beated our assault with Bi-planes! We lost 8 fighters and 2 bombers. Soviets lost 9 I-153 and I-16 Type 24 planes! ... Göring: Mein Fuhrer, we need a new air warplan! Hitler: NEIN! I just got a secret message from our intelligence source "2by3 dev team".
