Krasny -> Fleets Are Disobeying Orders (12/11/2011 12:05:36 PM)

Fleets that I have set to defence, range system are flying to other sectors.

How do I stop them from doing this?

K, I assume you haven't set the posture for the fleet so check the posture of the fleet. Had this same problem in my current game and it was fixed when I set posture to "system".
The fleets seem to have two range settings now: The engagement range (top right corner of the info screen) and the posture range (at the bottom of the info screen).
Hope this helped.

I set posture to defence and set range to system.

And took them OFF automatic.

The icon in the top right of the info screen gets me the diplomacy window.

Fleet posture doesn't really do anything if your fleet is on manual.

If they are on Auto, they will leave their posts to refuel and retrofit, and then go BACK and resume posture. If the fleet has a home base but is on manual, it will leave whereever it is at to refuel (once idle and low on fuel) and then go back to its home base.

There's probably some more nuance in there, but that's off the top of my head.

OK, let me put it another way, why are ships that aren't set to automatic, doing their own thing?

They're making attacks on systems, moving away from system I ordered them to move to, and turning my current war into a total pig's ear.

AND THEY'RE ALL OFF AUTOMATION!!!!!!!

EDIT: I've only been getting this since installing the latest beta.

Hi Krasny,

First, please make sure you are running 1.7.0.6, which is now the first official update.

Second, fleets on manual with fleet postures will still follow those fleet postures. If you are seeing fleets doing something that you cannot explain, please upload a save file for us. Fleet postures are new with Legends and it's possible there are some issues we missed.

Regards,

- Erik

I was using the last beta. I uninstalled DW and installed with the official patch. Too late to tell if it helps matters, since I got a CTD, which is a first for DW.

Erik, would you mind elaborating on the last quote? I was under the impression that manual fleets did nothing, and automated fleets behaved according to postures.

Does the home base matter in this? I know that in the map overlay, the fleet disposition is based on the home base of the fleet, not the actual location of the fleet.

Jerkface -> RE: Fleets Are Disobeying Orders (12/12/2011 3:50:47 PM)

Just some more information.  I put all my fleets on manual, attack, and system.  Sometimes they still move out of system for unknown reasons, and most of the time, only or two ships will respond to a pirate incursion.  Sometimes, no ships respond.  Usually all of them just stay parked and do nothing.  They dont refuel or attack unless I tell them too.

The desired behavior is...stay in the system, and attack anything in it.  Should I set them to auto, attack, and system?

This is one of my thoughts as well, especially if you have auto upgrade on.

If you have you Fleet on Manual and they are set to Attack System Targets, they should engage any enemy in the System.
As for sending only a few ships for Pirate engagements, that's determined by the Overmatch setting in an Options sub menu.

pcoud -> RE: Fleets Are Disobeying Orders (12/12/2011 11:12:44 PM)

@jerkface: funny how different people may interpret the same thing in two opposite ways: I have the exact same desired behaviour as you, but I set my fleets on manual, defend, system. You say: attack anyone that comes in, I say: defend against incoming threats. And by the way, what is the difference? It seems to be working rather well for me, so maybe you can give it a try.

My understanding of the attack posture is more when you want your fleets to move into ennemy territory and attack. Attacking is an action, defending a reaction. When you are "attacking" an ennemy that entered into your system, you are actually defending, in my opinion.

Anyway, fleet and ship behaviour is very confusing: you have individual ships engagement stances, fleet engagement stances, fleet postures, manual vs auto, the default engagement stances in the empire settings, the attack overmatch, and behaviour that is dictated by the ship design itself...
I really wish Erik or Eliott could someday spend some time in explaining at least how it is intended to work (as Erik said just above, it is maybe not working as intended), as we all feel we have a powerful tool, but very few seem to be able to properly use it.
