Mark VII -> RE: Sad News (1/3/2012 3:38:40 PM)

Certainly a not great beginning to the new year with the announced loss of two "rocks" to this forum.

R.I.P. Herwin

terje439 -> RE: Sad News (1/3/2012 4:13:36 PM)

RIP Herwin

Terje

mdiehl -> RE: Sad News (1/3/2012 5:44:51 PM)

Fare well in the Summerlands, Herwin.

RIP Harry

Thought you might like to see him one last time.

Canoerebel -> RE: Sad News (1/3/2012 8:58:06 PM)

That's the first time I've seen him. He looks like a college professor I could learn something from (assuming I brought a dictionary to class and paid careful attention, doing my part while he was doing his).

captskillet -> RE: Sad News (1/3/2012 9:07:02 PM)

Very intelligent man, his passing will be missed by all in this community. My condolences to his family...........may God grant his peace to them. [&o]

Nemo121 -> RE: Sad News (1/3/2012 11:26:21 PM)

Harry was a gentleman. He and I talked somewhat by PM and I found him a gentleman in the true sense of the word.

My thoughts are with his family...

P.s. Do we know what happened? I'm assuming it was something sudden as he'd never mentioned any enduring illness etc.

ilovestrategy -> RE: Sad News (1/4/2012 2:53:37 AM)

Man, he was planning on going to the States too. His posts were leagues beyond my understanding.

jeffs -> RE: Sad News (1/4/2012 3:13:44 AM)

[:(]Very Sad...A very depressing surprise.
At least God now has a great AE opponent to pass the time with.

Reg -> RE: Sad News (1/4/2012 3:33:55 AM)

(Posted elsewhere but is applicable to this thread as well)...

There are hints of illness in his last posts on his AAR from a couple of weeks ago.

I too used to enjoy his ad hoc essays. Often not directly applicable to the game but always informative and interesting.

He was a unique character that will be missed on this forum.

HansBolter -> RE: Sad News (1/4/2012 12:00:02 PM)

Farewell Harry.

I'm finding it difficult to respond to the two threads announcing the deaths of forum regulars.

The spectre of death looms too close upon me as last year I lost my 51 year old younger brother to cancer. Four months later I'm still struggling to cope with the loss.

Harry's insightful posts will be greatly missed by all.

Omat -> RE: Sad News (1/4/2012 3:29:03 PM)

Condolences to friends and family.

Omat

Kitakami -> RE: Sad News (1/4/2012 9:55:48 PM)

Sigh...

Never met him in person, and never addressed him directly in the forums, and yet... there is a sense of loss... RIP herwin. We all have to go, but you will be sorely missed.

David The Great -> RE: Sad News (1/5/2012 10:00:04 AM)

Condolences to friends and family.
Had some good laughs with his posts that were far beyond us

David

Agreed, I spoke to him once or twice, but I truly believe the WITP community took a loss :(

Oldguard1970 -> RE: Sad News (1/5/2012 8:16:52 PM)

Herrbear -> RE: Sad News (1/6/2012 5:18:57 PM)

A great loss. May he rest in peace.

CaptDave -> RE: Sad News (1/6/2012 8:55:50 PM)

He could be rather pedantic at times (okay, most of the time), but if you could figure out what he was saying he was a wealth of information.  A definite loss!

rockmedic109 -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 6:35:44 PM)

I am shocked and saddened. I will miss his posts. Even the ones I could never understand.

My condolences and prayers go out to his family.

Blackhorse -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 7:04:10 PM)

RIP, Harry

You are also in my thoughts and prayers

Feinder -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 7:33:06 PM)

Rest in Peace Harry.
You were very passionate with much to contribute and teach all of us.

Our prayers for your family and friends.

Highest Regards,

JWE -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 8:04:21 PM)

A couple of mutual friends sent me some details on Harry. He had a heart condition that manifested itself as asthma; and he well knew the difference between bronchial and cardiac asthma. He carried on nonetheless. He was a very private person, so he would be the last to note his disability.

Apart from here, he was well regarded by many in the techno-whacko sci-fi community (of which I am an ardent adherent). His thoughts were respected by people ranging from James Schmitz to Jerry Pournelle. A good eulogy for Harry was given by Jerry Pournell at Chaos Manor:

"We corresponded often about many things, mostly in agreement, but when we were not it was worth paying attention to why. He enjoyed rational discussion. He was a practicing Christian, and churchman. Requiem ęternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. "

I can think of no better.

PaxMondo -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 9:29:18 PM)

Ach, cardiac asthma?!  Ah, Harry ... you fought the good fight a long time.  Condolences to his family for their loss.

I had several discussions with Harry, we were usually on the opposite sides, but he was a classy guy.  I made a stupid comment once and Harry called me on it.  He was good about it though.  Classy.  I went back a re-read a couple of our discussions today.  In hindsight, he was a lot more gracious than I was.  I gotta work on that.  I remember a few months back in his AAR when he stated that he needed to worry less about the outcomes and enjoy the game more.  Think that maybe he meant that in more ways than one.

Thanks Harry for the lesson, hopefully I'm not too old to still learn.  Gonna miss you ...

vettim89 -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 11:37:11 PM)

It is said that you do truly appreciate things until you lose them. I have taken some time to read over some of Harry's non-AE writings in the last week. He truly thought at a very high level in all that he did in life. His writings on science and faith are especially poignant now that he has passed.

DivePac88 -> RE: Sad News (1/8/2012 11:40:16 PM)

So said to here of Harry's passing, as we have had some discussions over the years. Harry taught me about intellectual humility, as he was smarter that me. He also knew it, but didn't rub it in.

Rest in peace Harry, and still do the numbers Mate. [&o][&o][&o]

fcharton -> RE: Sad News (1/30/2012 12:15:40 AM)

(didn't log here for a while, came back today and heard this... darn!)

I'll miss Harry for those implausible scientific discussions, which could begin on ground combat models (and why my troops got waxed in Burma), and end on bat brains and ill posed problems. This always made those "math subjects" he started here very thought provoking.

You'll be remembered, Harry, hope you're in peace wherever you are now.

Knavey -> RE: Sad News (1/30/2012 2:03:34 AM)

Wow...was always interesting to read his posts...some of which went right over my nuclear trained head.

RIP
