Commanderski -> RE: 1.06.00 Axis AI vs fulkerson T5 (2/20/2012 3:09:46 AM)

In my game, I am at the start of T3 and the AI is already in the Smolensk land bridge area and inflicted more casualties on me than in your T4. I'm doing about the same as you in the North and South but the AI is really doing a number on me in the Center.

larryfulkerson -> RE: 1.06.00 Axis AI vs fulkerson T5 (2/20/2012 4:13:30 AM)

Here's the moves of the Axis side and the Soviet side in T5:

Not much you can do for the big Western Front pocket except maybe something this:
Move combat units to good terrain or something with a fort level
Move HQs to the middle, so the combat units keep as much supply as possible

Good idea. Thanks. Keep those good ideas flowing in.

Again, against the AI you don't have to defend really forward. You can start building a defensive line beyond the supply radius of it's jump off points, letting your divisions dig in, rest, and train before being attacked. I see in the dead units list one of those PM divisions, which you tossed into the line soon after it was formed. They are liable to rout or shatter with their mediocre morale and low experience if you push them into action so soon.

Against a human a runaway may hurt more than help, not sure.

I guess I thought I needed the services of that unready division right away. Maybe I didn't. And I'm not sure I know what you mean by
a runaway. Could you spell that out for me? I haven't yet made it a practice to rail into the front lines those units that are depleted,
they don't have a CV worth exploiting.

Here's the losses, etc. from the Axis half of T7:

My level bombers are getting creamed. I think I'll send them to the NR to rest for a turn or two while I leave the fighters deployed so as
to throttle the Luftwaffe somewhat. It appears that the Randall dude was correct all along. I'm going to have to pay more attention to
the advice he gives me. D'oh.

randallw -> RE: 1.06.00 Axis AI vs fulkerson T8 (2/20/2012 9:47:42 AM)

You are defending as far west as possible; it may not be a requirement against the AI or even certain players. In some ares that many not be needed, as you can give up some useless ground to defend better terrain, and you force the Axis to outrun the area where he is supplied.

I don't have much slack between where he is and Moscow so I figure it might be prudent to defend as far west as I can safely defend.
But your idea about pulling back to better terrain and "pulling" the Axis troops to an "out-of-supply" position is well taken. I'll do some
recon-by-cursor stuff to see where the Axis railheads are now a days and pull my dudes back to better terrain ASAP.

Here's a picture of the Center. I also have an AAR going too. I started setting up defensive lines as soon as I could. The only difference in the initial set up is I used the Better Position Grand Campaign which looks like resulted in a larger pocket and I had fewer troops to work with in the Center. The 7th Panzer did 6 attacks in one turn, which really surprised me.

So um.......this Better Position Grand Campaign is a mod of an existing scenario? Cool. Good to hear you've got an AAR going. I'll follow it just to compare to how it goes with this game.

larryfulkerson -> RE: 1.06.00 Axis AI vs fulkerson T8 (2/20/2012 3:39:49 PM)

I moved most of the bombers ( all those except near Moscow ) to the NR last turn. This turn I assigned them to the VVS airbases so as
to give them something to do besides involving them in the carnage of ground support. This is just temporary and only for a turn or 2.

I've still got a lot of empty airbases and almost all the planes are deployed. Maybe it's time to start disbanding some of those SAD
air bases since they are going to go away anyway soon. That way I can get the permanent air bases to be generated sooner. Just a
thought.

Seminole -> RE: 1.06.00 Axis AI vs fulkerson T8 (2/20/2012 4:28:09 PM)

Old habits apparently die hard. [;)]

Still making pretty, straight lines and not defending every swamp hex between Poland and Moscow (except the Pripyat, of course).
e.g. units NW of Kiev sitting the open, but not defending the path over the Dnepr through swamps north of Kiev.
You didn't bother to defend the swamps north of Velikie Luki. Those are forts his engineers can't demolish, and you let them go without a shot fired.

Cities like Rzhev and Kirovograd sit empty while you place units in clear hexes.

I don't get it, man...

You gotta lose the focus on a 'solid' line until after the rains. Before then you need to make the Germans pay the highest possible price for every MP they march east. Let him build of up fatigue and burn up supplies in combat again and again.
