That has to be every Allied players dream in the first couple of months, seeing Force Z vectored onto something juicy and vulnerable.

As per usual then the Japanese punched well above their weight.

A Japanese heavy cruiser at anchor, pants down, outnumbered and outgunned by several orders of magnitude, in broad daylight, managed to damage quite badly 2 light cruisers and a DD.

that's why I think a USN CA spending 1500 shells should also be able to hit two enemy DD in broad daylight.

Sub attack near Babeldaob at 91,96

Japanese Ships
xAK Teiryu Maru

Allied Ships
SS O16

SS O16 launches 2 torpedoes at xAK Teiryu Maru

yeah, Allied subs, they suck... as great as I find split tubes, I wonder if that means having reduced the hit rates by a ratio of 2 or 3 too... usually my subs just miss targets like slow freighters, in this turn two attacks, both missed...

was there anything done to accuracy of the torps or whatever to model real life hit rates with real life spreads compared to the fantasy stock game spreads and the resulting hit rates? I guess there was, so is this just bad luck or will the total hits just go down to 1/3 of what was low in stock already as the subs are now firing only 2 torps instead of 4 or six on ships like freighters?

have spotted the enemy incoming at Midway, as fast as he moves in the SRA as fast is the enemy advancing through the Central and South Pacific where we have spotted several enemy convoys... once again I raise the flag for the idiotic amphib bonus outside of historic targets for which it was supposed to... the next weeks will show a lot of examples for this... without having to have to prepare troops at all, the Japanese can just land wherever he likes no matter if in the SRA, or 20000 miles South East of Tokyo on the SE map edge...

ouch, that was a pretty severe bombardment... I'm 100% sure the enemy will bring enough to take the atoll easily, he knows exactly what I have there so figuring out what is needed to take the place isn't all that hard... too early for me to have a chance to react, the small number of convoys that have left the West Coast with meager reinforcements for the Pacific will arrive weeks after the Japanese rushed through the area...

seems like the enemy wants to move out that div that helped taking Hong Kong as soon as possible so he clears the whole minefield in a day or so... it's really a pity that the number of mines was so drastically reduced in AE (which was good) but the ability to clear mines was untouched so we may now have a more realistic number of mines at bases but still an unrealistic way to clear them... oh well, don't think mines will sink more than a dozen ships per side in the whole campaign so it's only an annoyance...

I tried to get this sub out of port but it turned around EVERY turn again as subs have a default setting to return to the nearest port when they are above a certain damage number in total... what a totally strange design decision... this sub could have been easily saved by sending it down to Australia and I tried to do so several times but each day it just turned around to be disbanded in Manila... oh my god... two freighters tried to move through that area but here one can again see that it has been a failure IMO to create a bullet prove mid ocean intercept routine... two ships moving alone during the night in a 45 mile hex with 0% moonlight and both ships are of course intercepted... yeah... there should be die rolls if the ships are found or not and not 100% of the time an auto surface combat happening no matter how good or bads the conditions are or if it's an armada of 1000 ships or 1 small xAKL... my 2c on the matter, like it or hate it, agree or disagree...

the enemy was spotted to move on Merauke (spotted as DD/DD/DD/DD - so I was sure it would be a fast transport, also from the speed it was moving along) and I had British cruisers in the area so I guessed the enemy would go to Merauke and I set my cruisers to intercept... this again shows how well bluebook is playing, even though he didn't spot my cruisers last turn, he placed two TB right South of Merauke, right in the way of my incoming cruisers... very well done for that...

now what am I supposed to say about the naval engagement... my cruisers suck once more, at 1000 yards they are not able to deal with two IJN TB... very well done, very well done... this not enough, firing a dozen shells and not causing any frigin damage, this also means my cruisers TURN BACK and are not proceeding to Merauke to attack the fast transport there...

well done, very well done...

This guy bluebook has got some serious attention to detail going on. [X(][&o]

That said, I woulda expected two TBs to just be a speed bump to light cruisers with 6" guns...

crsutton -> RE: Ending an IJ wet dream - bluebook (J) vs castor troy (A) (2/21/2012 5:00:17 PM)

Yep he seems to be very good. You just have to let him have his way some times and make sure you do not lose anything that you can't replace. Territory can be recovered-dead carriers can not. That was a nice pimp slapping you gave him in the DEI. Not going to win the war but will make him play a little more closer to the vest.

he is, he truly is. As it stands now (nearing Feb in the game and the AAR being behind) he really seems a guy who's going to bring me to the edge of defeat if he continues like this. But as you say, territory can be recovered and I'm usually careful enough not to lose my carriers early enough but you should never say never, who knows what he's going to pull out of the hat. I´m trying to catch up with the AAR asap, doing usually two turns on weekdays and more on the weekend I think I am hard pressed to follow the game with the AAR. [:D]

But I can already say that this campaign will be an interesting one, really interesting.

if we ignore what happened at Kendari where he took the risk to send in his invasion without any cover force (mind you, nothing would have happened if Force Z wouldn't have been waiting nearby) he would have overrun me without any real losses so far which perfectly shows how well he puts his invasions forward. Ok, of course he knows exactly what I have where at this stage of the war and there is nothing I can do about it but still, never experienced such an enemy advance in all the years. Pheewww...

It'd be interesting to see how he does when the war becomes more reactive in nature. I think in the early war the script is well known, and an avid planner can make hay given full knowledge of the map and all the old tropes which are going to play out.

Later on, it's much more up in the air. Fog of war descends on the globe, and the game becomes much more open ended as well, with much wider scope for operations.

so much about that... in the middle of nowhere around Alaska, two enemy cruisers drive right into that empty convoy that was heading into the area... my convoy was not spotted before, my 12 PBY in the area didn't spot the enemy cruisers... result is the whole convoy sunk, all ships... pretty much what I said earlier, you don't have to fear the AMC of the enemy but you do have to fear a cruiser with some escort... pure luck to stumble into this convoy, but well done, a nice raid... this is my ONLY convoy bigger than 2 ships in the whole region North of San Francisco... the cruisers sure retire, they probably spent most of their ammo and if the IJN spends some shells it's well worth it... losing those AP is a loss, the KV and xAK, well, those are expendable...

borked naval movement yesterday, didn't keep me from trying again this turn... definitely more success with a PB and a freighter sunk... even if my PTs at Bataan will all be sunk, they have scored enough points already that their loss won't result in a 4:1 point ratio for the enemy and this is all we aim as the enemy's fast expansion seems to be aiming at autovictory... needless to say though, just like yesterday, the movement of my four PT squadrons here is BORKED... same as last turn, only one managed to move the one needed hex and arrived here during the night...

boy, am I the only one constantly experiencing flawed naval movements? This has been there since WITP...

some interesting intel today, two heavy artillery units are moving to Truk, surely not the only units going there... if I would have to guess, those are tasked to go to Port Moresby, or worse (not sure if for the Allied or Japanese [:D]) tasked to go to Australia... as we have spotted a huge Army moving down Malaya, bluebook stated he expects to see Singapore surrendering within a week and then the question is if he will turn onto India or Australia... I only replied like "be my guest"... [8D]

we see lots of convoys going far into the South and South East Pacific, it seems he is attempting to take every piece of land there...

situation report of the South Pacific... as you can see, the enemy is going to attack Fidji soon, what else would KB do in the area... I have formed an amphib TF early on trying to move a rgt to Suva but what can one do when the enemy is pushing the combination of sling shot movement and amphib bonus... my convoy is still a week out and no way I am going to send it in when KB is near... the convoy is rerouted (not sure where I have sent it then, IIRC it was Christmas Island) and Fidji is expected to be lost...

interesting too is that bluebook always seems to use PB as bait or picket TF in front of KB as I always spot those crap ships in front of KB... interesting tactic, he sure won't complain when I flood the map with picket ships too then... I always found it gamey, but what is good for the goose...

Looks like he's going all out for Australia, and trying to isolate the Aussies fast.

...keep an eye on Western Australia.

I don't ever think I have seen a JFB move so fast. This guy is Bushido on steriods.....[:D]

Captain Cruft -> RE: Ending an IJ wet dream - bluebook (J) vs castor troy (A) (2/22/2012 5:21:10 PM)

You can definitely do it. I think most players like to have their invasion convoys well escorted though and preferably covered by air. Not to mention us OCD types who hate splitting units up into slivers.

Yeah, I hate that.

Takes me ages to rebase heavy bombers as a result. When i wanna rebase them it usually means standing them down until everything is fixed and I can fly them in one go - or I have a ship ready to transport the squadron fragments the same day I move them by air, so I can forget about it secure in the knowledge that they'll link up again soon (or be sunk trying!).

Not unlike the Nazi campaign through France '40 ... [:D] [reffering to your signature ..]

I am not sure about Big Babes Lite? Is Autovictory possible? or does this quick expansion end with over expansion? Is this like the PzB type game?

I don't know how much Babeslite changes in terms of autovictory and I have to say while I always like to have an autovictory and would hate to lose on autovictory (avoided that so far in my career [:D]) I would not see it as the end of the game. But, like I've said, I would try to avoid that and without huge ground or ship losses it should not be doable, at least not with only taking empty ground, no matter how fast. Not sure what you mean with PzB type game.

it's been ages since the last time one tried to conquer Australia in my games and as it stands now, I would welcome this. It's huge and I would not defend it as a whole again, but there are some nice spots that are really hard to take and if the Japanese fail to take all of Australia or kills off all those units there, then it was one of the bigger mistakes Japan can do because as soon as he starts wargames around Brisbane I will get my reinforcements so in total I would have more troops then, which probably isn't what a JFB is wishing for. Of course, taking all of the continent and destroying all the troops there would be quite a victory. Nothing is impossible, but usually I'm confident enough being experienced enough not to make that happen. Perhaps I'm overconfident. [:D]

denisonh -> RE: Ending an IJ wet dream - bluebook (J) vs castor troy (A) (2/23/2012 8:22:08 AM)

If he is coming full up and fast, best to focus on defending Sydney/Melbourne. As the Japanese in scenario 2 with the extra ground forces and an aggressive approach, defending too much forward may leave you with very little to defend Sydney/Melbourne when he comes. High risk operations also have a high payoff.....
