Yeah, disbanding a rgt of the Aden divs wouldn't be the best one could do but if bluebook really goes for Australia then I need those AIF42 squads as those are 50% better than the CMF militia. Have found an easier way to do it though, got three dozen AIF42 squads in the pool and can upgrade an uderstrenght bgd using those squads. Then I am going to disband the bgd in Sydney which will bring my squads to something like 70-75 which is enough to upgrade a division every couple of days. Yes, this is the way to do it all the way through. Upgrade smaller units like lark and gull. Then after filling them up and upgrading them disband them. The extra squads will go into the pool as upgraded squads and you can then start upgrading full divisions by doing it a brigade at a time. Realistically you are looking towards using Australian units on the offensive in 1944. With careful disbanding and considering the pitiful replacement rate and PP costs you can sustain about 4 active divisions in combat. This should be your goal. Once there is no threat to OZ focus on building four good divisions. The fully upgraded 1944 Australian divisions are very powerful and loaded with support. Very good units but you have to be very careful about replacements. Does not help that they use commonwealth devices of which there are never enough. So many players go to great pains to reconstruct the lost Singapore brigades and divisions but quite frankly it is a waste of time and resources. Focus on building up the units you already have. You will eventually have more than you can use anyways. What with PP costs, I am in mid 44 and only have about three Australian divisions and one or two NZ brigade bought out. Just too many demands on my precious PPs. PP costs are the reason I do rebuild the Singapore division from the bird battalions. Together with the 3 divisions that arrive in Aden over the course of the first years that gives you 4 unrestricted Ozzie divisions without any PP cost. It does help that I never got attacked in Australia and didn't need to fill out the restricted divisions of course ...

Yes, that would work. But if you have a serious fight in Oz and take losses then the choices become harder. I bought back the bird battalions in 44 but only because I needed some more small garrison and invasion units. Never did recombine them.

And here another interesting observation. I know there are ppl around that think all my rants or critics (or whatever you want to call it) are taken out of the blue and have no basis at all. Many times I think that ppl just don't look exactly enough, aren't really interested or just fail to notice what is going on. I have my pet peeves and the one mentioned here isn't one of them but I thought I could still show it. We have had O24 driving home the most succesful sub attack of the war so far and there won't be many more succesful ones I guess so sinking two freighters and a fleet oiler in one night should IMO result in some experience increase. Ok, thought it would be worth it to look up O24 in tracker to see what happened... what happened? nothing... so much about the experience routines, lol... I've actually seen pretty decent experience gains for some ships after a successful battle, but the caveat is that it was against other warships. For subs who'll mostly be shooting at merchants you're not going to see a lot of improvement.

I normally don't pay meticulous detail to ship crew experience gains, but took notice one day that the Detroit had a night xp value of 65 by late fall '42. Not knowing what it started with I mistakenly believed that it must have started somewhere near that value and took note to be sure to get it in action as a light SAG leader early on in my next game. I started the next game and examind the Detroit's game start xp value and was very surprised to discover that it starts with a night xp value of 35. I can't recall how many surface fights it participated in during the prior game to get an increase of 30 points in 9 months, but I do tend to be very aggressive with small light SAGs and tend to lead them with the CLs that have very low AA values as I see them as primarily surface combatants since they suck as carrier escorts.

yup, you can bring up your ships experience levels, they just have to survive those battles you send them in inexperienced, which is a hard task if you consider you need 3 or 4 succesful engagements against an enemy at least equal in numbers to actually reach the enemy's experience. A single fight can give you more than a dozen points depending on where experience is when you start the engagement. But overall, you won't hit the enemy's experience levels with your ships that start out the war or come in as reinforcements until mid 44. Those then suddenly are night battle super heros.

Even being hugely aggressive the number of cruisers likely to experience multiple surface battles, and survive them all, is pretty slim.

[:D] not only the losses within his troops, the delay of his further offensives probably even more so are not according to IJ plans... the weeks of delay at Singapore may be exactly those weeks we need elsewhere to stiffen our defense to a level it gets not as easy for the IJ as it is within the SRA when we fight on lost ground anyway... Hi CT, There is a database issue with dutch subs not firing their deck guns because they are rated as AA. Perhaps there's some morale check in surface battles on rounds fired vs rounds received or something. It must be bad for the morale of a submariner to be shot at but not being able to shoot back with that magnificent Bofors AA gun. In short: perhaps the diving is caused by the database error having consequences in the battle algorithm.

Detroit has been my supership from day one. In fact all of the old light CAs seem to make excellent destroyer leaders and do very well. I have lost most but I am willing to bet that Detroit has been in about 20 fights small and large during my campaign. A charmed life indeed. I will have to check her exp. Sad thing is, she should be in the 80s range by now but it just does not happen. Just a part of the game that any American warship before 1/44 has average to low crews and any after 1/44 had excellent crews.

Thanks CT, that's a pretty daunting perimeter for only the 2nd week of Feb! You seem to be taking it all in stride though. Are you digging in to defend PM, or has the SOPAC push interfered with your usual Australia plans? It seems like he hasn't really caught much of value for all his effort, but maybe it's kept you from doing things you otherwise would have. Seems like Port Hedland is step 1 to Darwin probably, which wouldn't be too surprising. Are you anticipating a further reach like Ceylon or maybe NZ? With scen 1 troops and how spread out he is I think he'd have to be crazy to go for India or Australia proper before your holdouts are reduced.

Ok, I would have preferred to hold the line Noumea - Fiji - Pago Pago but in the end it will do more harm to him than me I guess as it forces me into changing my overall strategy so he could well see me driving a land death star into Burma in halve a year. I would bet he goes for Darwin and he has troops marching over the Kokoda trail to attack PM but only two units are spotted so this seems to be rather light. He has battleships and cruisers at Koepang together with several convoys so he either is going for the Perth area or Darwin next. If I were him, I would take Darwin first to prevent further buildup, same for PM. PM and Darwin in Allied control could well turn out to be a bigger problem for him than his conquest of SOPAC is a problem for me. I really don't think his troops are spread out just because he took all that area. He took a place, picked up the unit and moved on to take the next target. There were two divs operating in SOPAC, guess both are tasked to assault PM now, IIRC intel showed both prepping for PM. And else there were only small IJN units operating in SOPAC which are enough to take all the empty ground of course. Ceylon I really don't care, NZ wouldn't change the strategic situation at all, I would lose a lot of points but I would gain a lot of first line NZ units as reinforcements so if this doesn't trigger autovictory for him then it actually won't do him any good at all as he would trade perm restricted crap NZ units with non restricted first line combat units. I doubt he'll go for India, his drive into the Indian Ocean had only one goal IMO, to cut off my shipping lanes from India to Australia which points also points towards my theory that Australia will be his main target.
