MichaelU -> Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 3:44:57 PM)

lb429 and I somehow managed to persuade the wives that the two of us should go on a trip to Pelelieu. Given we're based in Singapore it's relatively close, and with carte blanche to take 5 days off for historical travel, we were not going to say no.

Here's a few pictures of what we saw. If there's interest I'll pop a few more up. This is the Japanese HQ building that was at the edge of the airfield, or at least what is left of it after a severe hammering and then the ravages of time.

And here's one showing one of the steel doors on the HQ building.

And some of the damage to one of the internal walls. Some big stuff must have hit this building.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 4:01:56 PM)

This is an aircraft work area I guess that was next to the HQ building.

There were aircraft parts scattered throughout, here's a sample.

You've been there!! After all this time, there are still remnants of those titanic battles.[X(]
Fascinating stuff!
The pictures are great by the way!!

Kubel -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 4:38:55 PM)

Ah, it's the Type 99 navy wheel! [:D]

Seriously, is this an aircraft part, or something else?

JocMeister -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 6:16:36 PM)

Rear axel on a truck or other vehicle?

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 7:00:40 PM)

Could very well be something else, I just assumed it was from an aircraft as it was in this area. Here's another one.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 7:04:06 PM)

Here's a Type 95 tank on the runway. I like to think it's that one that gets knocked out with a bazooka in The Pacific. That's me on the left, and lb4269, aka Mike, on the right. We don't look happy, but really we are loving it.

More tomorrow when it's less late.

Just curious and it's hard without something known to me to use as a scale - do you recall about how wide that opening was? I'm just musing about maybe what kinds of aircraft it might have been used for.

Moar pics!

From a co-worker of mine who has done some post graduate work on Pelelieu and has visited twice:

That is cool! The Quonset huts located around the “Japanese Headquarters building” were constructed after the battle and used by the Seabees as a motor pool. I think one of the commenters thought they were for aircraft usage. All of Japanese aircraft hangers were destroyed. Can you find out who they are used as a guide? I wonder if it is my buddy Tangi. Man, I want to live there so bad! Thanks for helping me daydream about Peleliu!

It looks to be an American built quanset. The exposed foundation seems to be about 2 feet above grade. The curvette sections are grouted into the foundation. The opening between the foundation walls appears to be about 12'-0" to 14'-0" making the building about 24' wide. The two opening on the left are about 7' high by 4' to 6' wide. A storage building in my guess.

Front axle from a 4x4 truck.

wdolson -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/15/2012 10:42:55 PM)

I was thinking that looked like it was from a US Jeep, or possibly some other US truck-like vehicle that was abandoned on the island.

Those are some great shots you have there Micheal.

Nice photo's, wish i could travel around checking the old areas out.

crsutton -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/16/2012 5:02:14 AM)

Very nice. I am surprise that there is much left at all after 60 years.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/16/2012 5:49:17 AM)

I have a good buddy, Phil Kelm, who is the brewer at Palau Brewing Company. You guys will have to try some of the local suds. I also hope you are doing some diving.

One of these days I'll get off my keister and post some Bataan Death March tour pics from last year.

Cheers,
CC
