Indeed, rather looks like my VW Polo. [:D]

janh -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/16/2012 9:56:12 AM)

Amazing photos!  After so many years still that much to see.  Hard to believe that this was once the scene of some hard fighting.  Looks so peaceful now.
Any hints for travelling there if I ever should get a chance?  What to see, where to go?

Here's a Type 95 tank on the runway. I like to think it's that one that gets knocked out with a bazooka in The Pacific. That's me on the left, and lb4269, aka Mike, on the right. We don't look happy, but really we are loving it.

More tomorrow when it's less late.

I cannot believe something like that is still there!!!! [X(]

The rubber rims are still intact on the running gear...

Amazing picture!!

I did not know they were THIS small! [X(]

It's small only because turret is missing! [;)]

Empire101 -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/16/2012 10:37:19 AM)

Yep, they were mostly in the Panzer I category,[sm=Crazy-1271.gif]
although the Type 97 Chi-Ha did have either a 57mm ( early version ), or a 47mm ( high velocity, later versions )

I think in this case its a Type 95 Ha-Go AFV.

There were aircraft parts scattered throughout, here's a sample.

Ah, it's the Type 99 navy wheel! [:D]

Seriously, is this an aircraft part, or something else?

Looks like a auto axle to me. [;)]

Thanks for the pic btw.

My thought exactly! Looks like a Pz I in size :)

Canoerebel -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/16/2012 5:03:21 PM)

I've read one book about the Battle of Peleliu, and that was years ago.  But what stands out vividly in my mind (I love the way reading creates mind pictures) was the narrative of the attack up a steep mountain draw/valley/ravine, with stiff opposition from Japanese infantry and American fighter-bombers providing support.  If I ever had the chance to visit Peleliu, I would want to try to find that valley and walk up it.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:09:18 AM)

CR: That valley is quite well described in "With the Old Breed." I'd like to visit there for the world-leading diving and sample some of my friend's beer, but certainly a hike up that valley would be a great part of the trip.

Cheers,
CC

nashvillen -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:26:15 AM)

I have some topo maps and 3-D rendering of the Island that I put together for my co-worker, I will find them when I get a chance tomorrow and post them. The valley CR is talking about is very visible.

BTW, my co-worker had a relative that was involved on the Island. I also know of one other who frequents this board that had a relative involved.

LST Express -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 4:00:36 AM)

What I remember reading about the campaign is sinister terrain, nasty environment and Jap defenders determined to die for their little slice of hell.  Unable to even imagine what it was like and glad I don't have to.

rjopel -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 4:08:58 AM)

My grandfather served with 1st Tank Bn, 1st MarDiv and was wounded when his tank ran over a buried 500lb bomb.

Just goes to show: IEDs = Not a new idea

nashvillen -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 2:34:42 PM)

Here are two 3-D renderings of the topology of Pelelieu:

[image]http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/nashvillen/Peleliu_Base_Map.jpg[/image]

This first one is just of the central area of the island and it is showing the terrain in shaded relief. The greens are lower while the orange-red-white is higher. The elevations vary from 0 m (sea level) to 75 m. If you look in the upper center of the image you will see a finger of orange-red sticking out. This is the east wall of the valley CR mentions.

In the second image you will see the caves my co-worker, Bethany Hall, has either mapped or found on her trips. She has a ton of other data from her research project, but this is the only thing I have done for her since I do most of the 3-D stuff here.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:35:42 PM)

Here's picture looking out the front of the van down the airfield. Man, I was glad I wasn't running down that in full kit with people shooting at me. The ground is slippery as anything.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:37:37 PM)

Off in the jungle you can find this old Zero. Guess it must have been knocked out on the ground.

Yep, we'd read about the nasty environment but it's not until you're there and walking through the ridges that you realise quite how nasty. It's just one kill zone after another.

For the Japanese though the place must have been hell. Those caves, of which pics to follow, can't have been a comfortable place to live for several months.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:42:02 PM)

We used this book, the name escapes me, to try work out where we were. It's pretty difficult because the war pictures show this blasted landscape and you're wandering around in lush jungle.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:44:26 PM)

Here's a couple of LVTs. There's all this stuff just lying around rusting.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:46:22 PM)

There's this one part of the island where they've shovelled all this stuff, just piles of metal lying around. It would take a better man than me to work out what it all is.

MichaelU -> RE: Visit to Pelelieu (2/17/2012 3:48:24 PM)

I can't tell you how welcome this water hole is after a hot day tromping around looking at armoured vehicles. It wasn't as bad as when the Marines first landed, even though it was the same time of year, but it was still more than hot enough.

Here's one of the many bunkers dotted around the place.

A Higgins boat, parked in the jungle next to the beach.

Imagine the power it would take to flip a tank like this onto its back.

I am also 100% certain this is my grandfathers tank. Can you tell me where on the island this was taken?

We flew there via the Philippines, but you can fly via Guam if coming from the United States. Once there you have to charter a boat from the capital to Pelelieu. Make sure you get a good guide -- ours was fine for the basics but didn't really understand the battle, was just able to take us to the main sites.

It's a small island, so you can do it in 2 days max. So set aside some time to do other stuff like Jellyfish Lake, the Rock Islands and if you're into diving, do that.

Uhm, I'm not sure I could tell you exactly. The names on the plaque are from that tank, so should tell you something.

Ok thanks. That not his then. That's an Army M4 not a Marine M4.
