In stories i have read it wasn't the 6in but the main 16in batteries that made a wall of water.


This has been tried at various occasions (e.g. Allied CAs at Guadalcanal), but apparently it never worked because of the delicate timing and range problem. To have the shells arrive at the proper place and at the proper time in order to create a "water wall" right in front of an oncoming plane turned out to be a matter of luck rather than gunnery skill.

Yes this was in desperates times for convoys supplying Malta.
Talking about Nelson a scary photo, it got lucky- maybe the torpedo room flooded with the hit- if the image indeed shows damaged torpedos 24.5" (62.2 cm) Torpedoes from a airborne torpedo attack http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTBR_PreWWII.htm

afaik, to increase coordination, set your groups to the same altitude. i generally put DB/TB at 13K', to put the DB in the 'dive' band, and to avoid the lightAA from the target ships. the game-engine automatically pulls the DB/TB down to their proper 'release-point' altitudes, when the make their attack runs, & the target ships get a 2nd AA attack.

questions: does it really matter what altitude you set for your fighters? if you've got them set at 18K', 50% CAP, won't the remaining 50% automatically escort the attack planes at the attack planes altitude + 2k', assuming you've given the fighters enough range? or do you get more escorts if the fighters are set to the attack planes' alt?

In another aside the Vanguard was supposed to have 9 16" guns but instead got 8 15" guns because at the time the decision was made there were plenty of 15" guns in inventory and no 16" on the way.

Not paint. Torps had to be brushed with light grease regularly to prevent corrosion and ensure they could launch cleanly.
