Rereading Clay Blair's timeless classic Silent Victory. This, and Hitler's U-boat War (Volumes I and II) are a must read for anyone interested in the material.

No new books coming for Christmas [:(] (Sadly Autocourse won't arrive until afterwards). But then again I have a number stacked up to be tackled in the New Year. The SS book is starting to be more of a chore than seemed was likely after the early chapters, and the RAF book is just BIG!

Formula 1 - which is a world-wide sport not just European - is the pinnacle of motorsport and the premier category of open cockpit single seater racing.

Just about finished Floyd Gibbon's The Red Knight of Germany (1927) Not bad for .99cents Nice to see accounts of some the flyers he engaged. About to start Red Devils over the Yalu: A Chronicle of Soviet Aerial Operations in the Korean War 1950-53 (Helion Studies in Military History) Kindle Edition (I used to play a lot of MiG Alley) And just about finished Alexander Kent's With All Dispatch, Book 8 of the Bolitho series. (Yes, I like this series much better than Hornblower.)

Susan Mallery's 'Sizzling'. No planes, tanks, ships, war or history. Sorry guys hehe. It has Reid Buchanan though, he's a major league pitcher (I wonder if I should tell him he's a fictional man :) ).

I took a bit of a break from reading over Christmas, but got back into it in the New Year - and determined to finish off The SS. Alibi of a Nation As indicated previously this is a very interesting book - but the author's style made it a difficult read and following all the characters is not easy. That said, I learned quite a bit about the relationship between Himmler, Hitler, Heydrich and co. Had Germany won the war in say early 1942 - e.g. Soviets defeated and Britain sues for peace - it is fascinating to consider how things would have played out amongst the individuals competing for power and Hitler's approval. Goering vs Himmler vs Heydrich vs Goebbels - they were like a bunch of kids all turning on each other and plotting with and against each other. And of course there is the role that Hitler had in mind for the SS after the war. Just where would Nazi Germany have gone from victory in Europe and what would this have meant? Fascinating - if scary - stuff.

I�ve been given In the Name of Rome: The Men Who Won the Roman Empire by Adrian Goldsworthy. It has been a really interesting and enjoyable read. As its title suggests it focuses upon 15 generals who led the armies of Rome from the early days of the Republic all the way up to the death of Belisarius. Brandon Sanderson - The Way of Kings Really enjoying it so far, but I just hate that I'm once again starting another epic fantasy series where I have no idea when the next book is going to come out.

Genuinely fascinating book and example of Historical research at its best: Graham Robb, The Debatable Land: The lost world between Scotland and England. Basically a social/political history of the Anglo-Scottish border communities from 1400-1800 (with a good postscript taking it into the modern era). The traditional narrative is of a region plagued by banditry (a lot sponsored by the two crowns) - the English word bereaved is derived from the name given to the various groups of raiders - the reivers. Robb studied the local records and worked out it was actually quite a prosperous region (combination of fertile soils, garrison towns and the benefits of cross-border smuggling) to come up with a very different narrative. In effect most raiding was typical 'right of passage' stuff (steal a sheep to prove you were now a man etc) rather than the systemic acts of murder presented in mainstream views. Only period where reality matches the stereotype was the end of the 16C. Recommended as a really good example of how to combine detailed research and a wider narrative.

An excellent read, though pretty high level if one were to seek detailed military histories of the Indian units in the various campaigns they fought in. As a result of this, I will postpone my Western Desert follow-up and pile into Road of Bones (Keane). This is about the epic siege of Kohima 1944.

The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944, by Rick Atkinson I think I'll play a bit Panzer Campaigns: Sicily '43 and PzC Salerno '43, while I read it - just to keep up with the spirit. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque It's about German soldiers' depression during the World War I. Good read!
