Just done with Max Hasting's ''Secret War '39-'45''. Never really delved deep into the subject but was always fascinated about it and this book did help me to see a better picture of the gigantic effort for sometimes no gains or very little while others did pay off and how competence and incompetence went hand in hand in this type of warfare.

Now I'm starting to read into something I've wanted to read for quite a while
Ian Kershaw's ''To Hell and Back: Europe 1914 - 1949'' the first book as he's writing a second one that follows up from 1950. Scratched the surface just but am already pulled in.

Like many long series his books veer from excellent to a bit mheh, but always interesting and well researched. Quite a loss:

Half way through and I have to say I'm finding this an excellent read. Very well written.

Finished this and I have to say this makes me want to read more about India. An excellent read, though pretty high level if one were to seek detailed military histories of the Indian units in the various campaigns they fought in.

As a result of this, I will postpone my Western Desert follow-up and pile into Road of Bones (Keane). This is about the epic siege of Kohima 1944.

....and this is another cracking read. I've had this for years but never had the inclination to pick it up and read it - and then almost put it down again when I realised it was just about Kohima (and not the wider Imphal battle). But boy am I glad I persevered. The book was a little grating at first - too much unnecessary reference to imperial folly - but that didn't last long - the story of the Kohima siege, the build up to it - from both CW and Japanese perspectives - is absolutely riveting.

"The German Campaign in Poland" in the "US Military History of WW II Green Book" series.

2 Euro (Kindle Edition) for a book chock full of facts, data and infos. A really unexpected find.

Kasserine Pass 1943 in the Osprey Campaign series. It makes for a nice companion to the TOAW IV scenario. [:)]

The Tank War by Mark Urban it follows the fortunes of a regular British Army Tank Regiment the 5th Royal Tank Regiment from its evacuation from France in 1940 to capturing Hamburg in 1945 great read

Good read. The sequel, Going Downtown: The War Against Hanoi and Washington, goes into the Turkestan Incident in some depth.

These are worth a read IMHO: Fast Movers: Jet Pilots and the Vietnam Experience by John Sherwood. Alpha Strike Vietnam: Navy's Air War, 1964-73 by Jeffrey L. Levinson

Back in 2012 I got much of the way through Target London (Campbell) but didn't finish it. It was a good book (about the V-1s) if I recall correctly and I'm not sure why I didn't get to the end, so I intend to rectify that [:)]

Thanks for the interesting tips. I plan to read Bell's 100 Missions North and then go to Rasimus's When Thunder Rolled. Do you have some good tips about Wild Weasels in Vietnam (Hampton's The Hunter Killers I read)? Thanks.

“1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War”, by Benny Morris.

For some reason there is a tendency to forget that there was an Arab-Israeli War right after WWII and even before the Korean War. I admit that I knew next to nothing about this conflict, and that I’m learning a lot. Warmly suggested.

As a big fan of the Bernie Gunther series, am very sorry to hear of Mr. Kerr's passing.

Thud Ridge is absolutely outstanding - it took guts and courage to fly "downtown" into the most heavily defended airspace of that time. Broughton was a professional, planning missions carefully and then leading (102 missions) from the front.

I would also recommend John Master's "The Road Past Mandalay," one of the finest narratives about exceptional leadership in war.

Gents, my thanks to you all for your many excellent recommendations.

Also: loki100, as I reread the WitW rules and relearn the game, your comments and posts are (among several others) an excellent guide, often clarifying concepts that I do not fully understand.

Yes, I'll miss the bi-annual 'Bernie', the original trilogy was spell binding and some of the later ones equally good

and glad the WiTW commentary helps. I'm writing the manual for WiTE2 and am feeding in a lot of the WiTW questions - in effect if its not clear in the WiTW documentation can we explain it better this time. But of course there is the unavoidable problem of sheer length.

Anyway, I've praised one of her earlier books The Unwomanly face of War (interviews with women members of the Soviet army and partisan movements in WW2) and have just finished another. If you have a strong stomach, would really reccomend Svetlana Alexievich's Boys in Zinc, interviews with members (or their surviving relatives in many cases) of the Soviet forces that fought in Afghanistan. There are sections that are so grim as to be almost unreadable but, like the earlier, book its a masterpiece of oral history - I'd put her with Lynn MacDonald for her ability to handle this style of writing.

Just finished the 21 volume Dave Robicheaux mystery series by James Lee Burke. I found all the books to be either good or excellent.
Now starting A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II by Gerhard Weinberg.

I'm currently reading 'Disturbing the Peace' by Richard Yates. I saw the film 'Revolutionary Road' and went on to read the book and I enjoyed it

I have Hitler's Pre-Emptive War coming to me for my birthday - hussah! This is another work on the Battle for Norway in 1940. It looks like it may concentrate too much on Narvik to the detriment of the rest of the campaign, but we'll see....
