Ha! You wish !

Save an occasional visit to Eurodisney, you haven't even invaded France in what? 70 years? (and note that the last forts in the Maginot line have been dismantled since more than 20 years...)

Makes that threat a bit groundless, no?

Love that quote! I'll use it some day (with my German brother in law, possibly..)

A French one you might want to use, after emptying a bottle (normally wine, but I suppose it can work with beer too): "encore une que les boches n'auront pas".

Je me bidonne.

If that's the right expression. My active french vocabulary shrinked to about 200 words, I'm afraid.
You seem to be very confident about your military. You know why the french built the boulevards? To let the Germans march in the shaddows [;)]

However crappy the EU is, it is absolutly great that this stupid haterad between most European nations is gone and we can joke about it!

More seriously, Germans are generally seen fairly positively in the US these days. At least those who know where Europe is. the average American is staggeringly bad at geography and knowledge about the world in general. The Americans on this forum are probably in the top 10% in knowledge about the rest of the world.

Here is a YouTube commercial that is British, but I think a lot of Americans who know what Germany is would resonate with this stereotype:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMQnPWjK5pE

Basically they think of Germans as a bit cold and distant, but excellent engineers and very reliable.

Graduates of German technician schools are in high demand in the US. The US has two year technician programs at community colleges, but the programs aren't as good as German schools. Most of the people who would go to the technician schools in Germany go to 4 year universities here and get engineering degrees. I spent a summer working at an engineering company in Milwaukee and all the technicians had German accents.

I think we owe a lot to Hollywood. The German is almost always portraited as a Nazi.

True story: I went to school with Larry Hovis' kids growing up. His daughter and son taught me to ride a bike. This is Larry Hovis, aka "Carter".

Like all kids in California, I naturally grew up surrounded by movie stars, potheads and surfers.

Not in my neck of the woods. I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley surrounded by Hispanics and Chinese. The town I lived in passed a law requiring every business to have at least one sign in English. There were a few potheads in my high school, but no surfers.

My parents had crossed paths with some people who were famous before I was born, but I didn't.

Hi Historiker,

Modern german stereotypes, and new horizons on the invasion of France...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYZgtNZaH2g

A crude translation, for our fellow forummers who weren't blessed with French lessons in middle school.

Germany seems the only one in Europe able to pull us out of the crisis, in this occasion, let us say hello to a friendly nation
Because the germans are the only ones in Europe to escape the economic depression
Because they know how to reconcile economic soundness, social values, and citizenship
Because, for someone who lives in the Ruhr, just the Nord Pas de Calais already looks a bit like the Riviera
Because if you can put up with Frank Ribery, you easily can put up with 65 million french people
Because at the moment, France is only defended by two soldiers and a broken down Leclerc tank, the rest is in Lybia and Afghanistan
Because, the last time, we didn't do such a bad job welcoming them!
The invasion of France by Germany, the only real hope of saving our economy!

- Bravo, bienvenue, willkommen in Frankreich

The invasion of France by Germany, it is whenever you want, guys.

Just in case you were wondering, anal is short for anal retentive, a semi-psychological term. (My German professor, oops, professor of German (language), in college said it was from holding verbs in until the end.) I have a friend of (half) Teutonic extraction, and she is a cleanliness maniac.

We have changed strategy. My sister lives in France, has married a Frenchman and has two sons. I live in France, have married a Frenchwoman and have two sons. You get the idea? About 20% of my kids' classmates have at least one German parent. Easy enough, given the French tendency to collaborate. A few more generations of not fighting the Germans and the "Tour de France" may look again like this - well organized, disciplined, efficient (and no doping):

I have noticed that too. But it cuts both ways. One of my sisters married a German, has three children, and lives in the capital of the former French "Département des Bouches de l'Elbe" (that's Hamburg, for our geography-impaired readers).

This raises an interesting question. After a few more generations of not fighting each other, what do you think will happen? The French will gain German efficiency? or the other way around?

As much as I'd love the former, I'm afraid entropy is on our side.

Edit : you're unfair about the doping, it is the fault of the Spanish, as we all know..

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: OT: Stereotypes about Germans in the US (4/16/2012 9:52:38 AM)

The former French "Département des Bouches de l'Elbe" - LOL! The French have a tendency to emphasise their glorious but long gone past. Their Army museum dedicates about three dozens rooms to Napoleon, but only two to World War 2... Btw, you know why the Eurotunnel has been constructed? To make it easier for the French government to flee to London in case the Germans invade again. [;)]

Regarding your question - well, I have been trying for years but my French colleagues have not made any perceptible progress in efficiency - must be the "resistance" heritage coming into play. And to my own shocking disbelief, French manners have polluted myself over the years - I have developed a tendency to ressort to "système D" instead of doing things the proper way. So I am afraid our strategy has a serious flaw... [:(]

Teasing aside, I'm quite happy with almost 70 years of peace in the EU and French-German relations as their are (at least on the "people" level, not politics).

Or more correctly the "UE", as the French in their language imperialism insist on calling the EU - like NATO > OTAN, UNO > ONU etc. - France really is a backward country...

[Sorry, couldn't resist a parting shot]
