Port Moresby reached level 9 airfield this turn... Cuttlefish shows so sign of trying to invade PM and if he does, he would probably fail doing so as this is one of those bases I intend to hold and therefore the base looks accordingly...

I was really surprised about this attack because the attack on my convoy yesterday should have alerted Cuttlefish and he should have been sure to encounter Cap over Akyab... he would have been better off to send most of the available fighters on sweep and some of them escorting the Nells and Betties at Rangoon... I won't complain, the escorting Oscars were shot down in droves today, both the US and British pilots all have 70 or better air skill and an average def skill of 65... three dozen enemy aircraft shot down over Akyab today for the loss of nine fighters (no pilot), makes it a crystal clear 4:1 for us... the convoy reached port today and is unloading, going to leave the day after tomorrow...

many thanks for taking this abandoned base... Yenan is not producing anything other than a victory point penalty nearly each day but CF is keen to take every single Chinese base I have abandoned... another minelayer mission going to Port Moresby... will bring up the mines there to something around 500 even though I really doubt Cuttlefish will attempt to invade the base and if he does, the chances to fail are somewhere around 95%...

may sound arrogant but as it stands now I can't see the Japanese achieving a big success anymore in terms of invasions outside the historical perimeter... of course strongholds like the Dutch on Java and Sumatra as well as the Allied at Clar Field will surrender at some point but else...

Cuttlefish moved two big Zero units to Lae to fly Cap over the base... he said the game won't last long if his fighters keep missing my bombers and I replied that he doesn't have to wonder as long as he keeps his fighters 20-24,000 ft above my bombers while not having good pre warning times over his bases... I gave this hint more than once so far, am not sure if CF realizes his settings are bullocks if he wants to hit my bombers... of course, he's doing good against my fighters if he keeps his fighters patrolling around the stratosphere but then he shouldn't wonder why they miss my bombers...

only 50% of our available bombers flew, for what reason ever... 10 enemy Zeroes were destroyed on the ground...

as most of the time we only lose aircraft on nav search, one Catalina and two Hudsons today... hard to understand why nav search is the most dangerous job in the game... as always, my squadrons are set to 60/40 search/rest, are not fatigued at all and aren't flying max range at 6000ft, none of them over enemy bases with Cap... as in every game before, I can hardly replace all aircraft lost on nav search as the replacement rate is hardly matching loss rate on nav search...

Grfin Zeppelin -> RE: Continental Clash - Cuttlefish (J) vs castor troy (A) (7/2/2012 12:07:41 PM)

What are the experience levels (not skill) of your nav search guys ? I am colecting data about this case atm. I noticed that some of my search squads suffer HORRIBLE ops loses while others not a single one in an entire year. Made me thinking.....

castor troy -> RE: Continental Clash - Cuttlefish (J) vs castor troy (A) (7/2/2012 12:11:40 PM)

as there is not much else going on in the game, the only more or less interesting development is the situation in Northern China... the enemy recently has taken Kienko (NE of Chungking) as well as the empty base of Ankang (SW of Sian)... first we had fuel flowing to my HI in central China but with the appearance of those two divs NW of Sian the fuel flow has stopped, dramatically reducing daily supply production in China which forces me to act accordingly against the enemy operations in Northern China... as you can see on the screenshot below, the enemy sticks to his tactic of using combat units without any support, no HQ, no base forces, no eng, no arty... just nothing... hmmm....

the whole enemy operation looks really halve hearted to me, with one div and a bgd at Kienko we won't have much of a problem to kick him out of the base as there are 2800 Chinese av moving NE, arriving there in just a couple of days... we will move 80 Blenheim, the three AVG squadrons and 80 Hurricanes to Chungking to attack the two units at Kienko to disrupt them, even though I guess the Chinese would be able to handle the two IJA units on their own without any air attacks but it should be even easier to dislodge them after several days of air attacks... the closest IJA airfield of use is Nanyang, currently being a level 4 field...

if the enemy is kicked out of Kienko we will shock attack East across the river and expect the enemy units to be forced to retreat once more which should put them into a horrible state... one of the enemy divisions NW of Sian is currently attempting to move across the river, we have ordered 2000 av to move North to welcome them on the other side of the river, being a rough hex I can't see anything else happening than the IJA division destroying itself if CF really moves it across the river... even if the shock attack wouldn't be a bloodbath for the IJA unit, our (if needed) repeated attacks will kick it back across the river...

I have roughly 5000 Chinese av around Sian, we have identified something like 1500 - 1700 enemy av spread between Kienko and Ankang with another Chinese army of 2800 moving towards Kienko making it at 4-5:1 in av in our favour... after dislodging the enemy from the areas we don't want to have them we will use the terrain up there in our favour, I can't see the Japanese achieving something against the Chinese as long as we stay on the defense in WR or Mtn terrain hexes...

What are the experience levels (not skill) of your nav search guys ? I am colecting data about this case atm. I noticed that some of my search squads suffer HORRIBLE ops loses while others not a single one in an entire year. Made me thinking.....

they are all "low" at the moment. Pilots that have flown over a hundred missions so far are around the usual 50-55 exp... after years of flying they will be around 60-65.

Long ago I fired up a little test using 70 experienced pilots on nav search and voilà, losses were non existant anymore. Now this explains the relation between exp and losses but doesn't explain why bombing missions against heavy opposition usually suffer less than nav search units that only met empty ocean the whole day.

this and the following engagement is leaving me once more shaking my head about the air combat routines going completely crazy which pops up now and then... once more, all we see is a never ending and completely silly dive orgy... the result is the usual, totally silly outcome of a 17:1 in aircraft shot down over the target... [sm=crazy.gif][sm=crazy.gif][sm=crazy.gif]

how this works is just beyond me and once more leaves me with the opinion that all that counts the way the air routines were "designed" is altitude as the one major factor... I could have as well sent in 20 skilled pilots, the result would not have been much different, but we have sent in 70 air skill 70 def skill pilots that were shot down at a rate that happened only a couple of times during the whole war when pilot experience between the two sides was highly different that you can find a reason for it...

the whole replay was nothing but Zero diving on Warhawk... firing from behind... boom... Zero diving on Warhawk... firing from behind... boom... Zero diving on Warhawk... firing from behind... boom... Zero diving on Warhawk... firing from behind... boom... boom... boom... boom...

funnily enough and making it even worse is the fact that we have set the Warhawks to 20,000ft but the strike seems to go in below 10,000ft... and if it would have gone in at 1,000ft, the result is just a silly joke and if these results would be consistent then you could really shelve the game forever... one and a halve dozen Warhawks shot down on a sweep against a base where the enemy hasn't got a single fighter airborne and then you see the silly dive dive dive dive dive and a kill rate of 17:1 vs 70/70 Allied fighter pilots in Warhawks...

Japanese aircraft losses

as you can see, our sweeping Warhawks "reduced" the Cap from 71 to 68 and now it's time for the Airacobras showing up (coming in at the ordered alt of 25,000ft) but that didn't help as their 70/70 skill didn't either as they were just as easily shot down by Zeroes that were diving diving diving diving diving diving until no Airacobra was left over the target... the Zeroes doing this while they had a pre warning time of 12min and their squadrons needing nearly an hour to be fully able to react on the incoming aircraft, being disrupted by the first sweep and overall surely not better than my pilots...

doesn't matter, the all dominating DIVE for the Zeroes (mind you, they can fly higher than the P-40 and P-39 which is all that counts given the design) results in a 13:1 kill rate vs the highly skilled Airacobras after achieving a 17:1 vs the Warhawks already...

one has to keep in mind that the way the air routines work isn't biased though, it works the same (in this case sh*tty) way for both sides... dive for the Zeroes against my Warhawks and Airacobras meant a ridicoulos outcome for my sweeping fighters, dive for my P-38 (set to an altitude the Zeroes can't even reach) means the same idiocy happening to the Zeroes what happened to my first two sweeps... amazing to see the Zeroes were even able to damage three of my P-38 (of which two crashed) but the P-38 shot down 15 Zeroes over the target for no loss during the engagement... 15:0 over the target... why? Simply put, because the P-38 can fly higher than the Zero and if I would use the editor and enable my Warhawks or Airacobras to reach an altitude of 40,000ft they could do the same to the Zeroes as my P-38 did...

sorry, I think I kept back with my rants for a good part of this AAR (there wasn't much to rant about so far IMO) but these three air engagements were nothing but pure SH*T in their outcome because it once more was all about altitude... if the German could have figured out altitude is the only thing that matters for their fighters and real life would have used the same air routines as AE then whole Europe would speak German these days...

sorry, but this is causing me to [sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif]... unfortunately, this will never ever be changed, not even tried to so we will go on hoping to have fighters that can reach higher than the enemy...

reason for my attacks (and I have been pretty confident when ordering them) was intel about a convoy bringing an AA unit to Lae and I wanted to knock out the airfield first (followed by the port) to either have the convoy turning back or sinking it...

side note, we also lost three aircraft on nav search, which is also nothing but the usual silliness (nearly daily silliness)... two Catalinas and a HudsonIII were lost, as usual, all were reported "crashed upon landing" which is always the same message we get when we lose the usual 40-50 aircraft (patrols and bombers) on nav search per month... no combat mission is as dangerous as nav search when you look at loss rate percentages... of course, air transport comes close, but combat missions are a cake walk compared to these missions... mhmmm... castor troy -> RE: Continental Clash - Cuttlefish (J) vs castor troy (A) (7/9/2012 4:22:39 PM)

ace in a day is no problem if you fly a fighter that can go higher than the IJ fighters... if the P-38 could only go 10ft lower than the Zero our squadron would have been shot to pieces just like the Warhawks and Airacobras...

EUBanana -> RE: Continental Clash - Cuttlefish (J) vs castor troy (A) (7/9/2012 4:35:18 PM)

I think CAP being forced to fly low to intercept bombers does even it out a bit, means the Allies can sweep Jap CAP but the Japs can sweep Allied CAP too - unless the Allied CAP plans on letting bombers through.

Altitude is too important though, I agree. Thats why you have these races to the stratosphere.

here comes our attack and we miss the 2:1 by 6 points but we would have needed a higher ratio to take the base on the first attempt anyway... we suffer pretty much equal losses but in total not being forced to retreat right away will hurt the Japanese units more than an instant retreat as they suffered lots of disablements and I am positive the next attack will take the base, causing lots of destroyed squads with all the rest being disabled, rendering those two IJA units useless for the coming months...

Correct me if I am wrong but the odds are really just for informational purposes only. That is you really pulled off an attack at 1.98-1 odds and reaching 2-1 does not really matter that much. What is more important in any attack is firepower and type of devices, not so much the odds. He had the stronger squads but you had 400 guns to his 150. I know that we are talking Chinese here but I regularly pull of attacks with pure Allied tank units vs strong but poorly equipped Japanese infantry units and even with 1-6 odds kill some Japs without losing any tanks.

You must be an old board wargamer to be looking at the odds...[;)]

I don't worry so much about low odds if I have better units and leaders. Or in this case numbers.

The odds I understand do dictate retreat? So it is quite possible to take heavy casulties because one is out gunned, but win the contest and move the enemy rearward. Sometimes this is the goal rather than the destruction of sqauds per se ..

I have had ok success against Zero's with P-38's but not so good results against Tojo's even when Tojos are on escort or lower CAP.

I am not a board wargamer at all and yes, the odds aren't everything but in the case of the Chinese, the odds pretty much is all you are counting on. This is one of the problem the ground combat routine has. In the later stages of the war when there is enough supply on hand for the Chinese, you can create 15.000av land combat death stars easily and they whipe the floor with the Japanese Army because all you need to dislodge the enemy and force a painful retreat (the only thing that really hurts) is a 2:1 if there are no forts.

To point it out, I am not worried about the odds at Kienko either, just wanted to point out we missed the 2:1 by 6 points. And the odds also do count in terms of disruption no matter how much damage you do, a 0:1 for example is not really great if you want to keep disruption at a minimum.

as long as we have the altitude edge I am not really worried about any enemy aircraft as for fighters, ceiling is the top value in the game, not speed or firepower as often said. The P-47 is the hands down best Allied fighter of the war (in the game) but go ahead and send a squadron in at 10,000ft with your enemy at 20,000ft and watch the difference when your P-47 are set to 40,000ft.

The Tojo will be a problem for the next 12 months though as I expect quite a number showing up soon and there is no fighter (except the P-38) that can go higher than the Tojo until 43. The Spit might perhaps but numbers are really small.

here's the reason why we attacked Lae's airfield recently, I am really glad that CF move his fighters out due to the overpowered effect of my P-38 strato sweeps... amazingly enough he still moved in his convoy though, we have several squadrons of USMC dive bombers plus USAAAF Marauders set to low nav attack at Port Moresby... weather is a little problematic today though...

now that was truly an interesting combat too... we spotted this unit attempting to cross the river North of Sian and thought it would just be a feint and the unit would be stopped before it crosses the river as it would be suizide to attack into our stack of Chinese Corps that sit in rough terrain but CF sent his single division across the river nevertheless... the result is a totally trashed IJA div and I am sure we will kick the unit back across the river tomorrow causing horrible losses within the enemy div for literally no losses on our side...

the way Cuttlefish operates his IJA combat units in Northern China they are easily handled by my Chinese hordes...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

here comes the next attack by the Chinese Army attacking at Kienko, as expected the enemy is kicked out and forced to retreat over the river... our attack does some nice damage, these two units literally got no combat power left and we will now pursue them shock attacking over the river in three turns... our bombers from Chungking will take make sure the enemy will be slowed down so we catch them with our shock attack...

means within a week we will completely trash two strong IJA divs plus a bgd in Northern China for minimal losses within the Chinese (speaking about destroyed squads/equipment - really don't care about a couple of hundred disabled squads spread out over a dozen units)... as it stands now, the Northern China adventure turns out badly for the Japanese...
