yamato -> Bermuda Triangle in the South Pacific ? (11/30/2002 2:50:43 AM)

Had the strangest thing just happen. My Japanese bomboardment task force entered Nouma and was struck by a fierce allied bomber attack which broke the task force into 4
seperate task forces---2 badly damaged cruisers---2 slightly damaged cruisers--- A very badly damaged BB with a healthy destroyer---and a healthy BB with a slightly damaged cruiser.
I set all task forces to return to Luganville with the exception of the healthy BB one which I assigned to follow the badly damaged
BB task force. An allied surface group containing a BB had just been spotted two hexes from Nouma, and I definitely
didn't want to leave the badly damaged BB without support.
The next turn the task force assigned to follow the damaged BB
task force had vanished ! No reported actions----not listed as sunk---just vanished into thin air. Anyone else encountered anything like this ?

Did you check Luganville for your missing BB? I have seen when a faster TF is assigned to follow a slower TF the faster goes to the destination of the slower TF and does not follow it (the slower TF).

Yep----first place I checked----it's simply vanished.

I've had subs go missing from a TF with other subs always returning from Truk just east of Rabaul, so there must be 2 triangles in the SoPac. I think it must be some database corruption thing that crops it's head from time to time & nobody's been able to isolate it.

Yamato

Did you check whether the ship is listed under the task force or active ship list icon? It could be that it is still sailing but in the sleath mode as I found out for certain TF sailings from Noumea to Luganville.

Piiska -> (11/30/2002 7:12:18 AM)

It could be that bug where AI sents your damaged ships to Tokyo from Truk -even if they are American. Apparently this 'works' similarly from Noumea. As funny as it sounds, it is possible that AI sent your damaged Japanese ships to Pearl Harbour for repairs.

Don't know about stealth between Nouma and Luganville---but it has simply disappeared. Even the BB Kongo miraculously limped back to Luganville ( 99 system damage and 88 flood damage ! ).
Since this was the task force it was supposed to follow, it would make sense it would have shown up at the same time. The same thing happened to a single sub task force I tried sending from
Townsville to Nouma earlier in the game---it just disappeared somewhere in the Coral Sea. I figured that maybe on that one I had missed a air attack report or maybe the game sometimes
just sinks subs due to system damage from moving. However a
BB unhit from the air raid with maybe 11 or 12 system damage
totally disappearing is quite another issue. I'm new to the game and still just playing the A/I. I'm playing scenario #19 with version 2.0 and the loss of the BB shouldn't affect anything as I
should easily gain an automatic win with the Japanese in this one
as have Luganville's size 5 and growing airfield heavily defended
and control the seas, with only a little over a month until the Jan.
43 deadline----but was just curious about if similar things might have happened to anyone else.

Maybe the lesson to be learned here is not to order TFs to follow TFs the game has formed to split off heavily damaged ships. Why would you want a BB with 10-12 sys damage to follow one that is on the verge of sinking?

In any event, Yamato, I have noticed a lot of similar weird behavior that always seems to revolve around unusual circumstances, particularly those that the designers probably didn't calculate.

I'm beginning to think that UV has a lot of such "holes" in it. If you order your forces to behave in ordinary ways, there doesn't seem to be a problem. If, however, you monkey around with stuff, like pulling air groups off a carrier and assigning other air groups of different types in their place, you wind up in the twilight zone.

For example, a bug involving friendly air units attacking your ships persists under certain conditions in v. 2.0. If you put a CV TF on a hex you are amphibiously invading in order to take maximum advantage of the TF's CAP and order your dive bombers and torpedo planes to conduct attacks on the ground installations there, you can bet that some of them will attack your carrier TF - and even be escorted by some of your carrier fighters! If you assign your carrier planes to naval attack or stand them down, there's no problem.

Sometimes, though, the problem is just you, the human, with an imperfect microprocessor. I have thought many times that I have identified a bug, and then, on further analysis, discovered that I was just stupid.

Ah, well. Game on, Garth.

maybe thier was a catastrophic ammo explosion:eek: it happened to the kongo but that was in port where everybody who did'nt get blasted witnessed it:D

Well to tell the truth the decision to bombard Nouma turned out to be a mistake considering the losses I took. Two earlier bomboardments had gone well so I was lured into taking another chance. The reason I tried to follow the Kongo was to assist her in what looked like surface combat coming up with the BB Washinton TF two hexes away ( I had just bombed it and had put a torpedo into the Washington, but knew the Kongo and her one DD escort stood no chance should they meet ). Since the game will not allow you to remerge what it has decided to split, I saw it as the only chance of possibly saving her ( along with some long range CAP ). The Kongo eventually sank anyway after docking in Luganville ( unlike all the other badly hit CA's and DD's who all returned for safe repairs )---just found it strange that the unhit BB
was the biggest loss for simply disappearing.
