That's not HI, it's OIL.

quote:

ORIGINAL: larryfulkerson

Here's why my HI was showing (150).......it's because I just now turned on the repair of the 150 HI points at Miri. So pretty soon I'll have those repaired and I'll be swimming in HI points.

You are of course correct. OilC was showing (150) and HI was showing (20). I should have posted the below picture instead. My bad.

Dan Nichols -> RE: Parry and Spar, or is it... Reluctant Admiral 4.2 Fulkerson(J) vs Moore (A) (5/26/2012 10:49:25 AM)

If you don't send a lot of supply to Miri, none of the oil will repair. You need 10,000 plus there to repair one oil point. You will need to send 160,000 supply total to repair the 150 oil points.

I did not know that. I'll get started right away. And I do thank you for the information.

AAR's by newbies are great learning tools for us other "newbies", both because of the advice they get, and way that everything is detailed.

I'm in June '42 in my first ever game, and I wish I'd moved the P-40's!

I'm thrilled by all the advice we're getting. It's great. Please keep it coming you guys.

I'm skipping over a lot of stuff in the combat report and trying to include only the more important stuff but I'll start giving more details if that's what you like. Cool.

Is it a PBEM or against the AI? I'd love to see you do an AAR so I could keep up with your progress.

I have two thoughts about your Australia complaint. First it's absolutely staggering to me how many troops and how much equipment the Australians provide, both in the India theater and in the Southwest Pacific.

IIRC the best experience level they have available at the start is in the low 50's. (most of the INF is in the 30's) The AUS & NZ experienced units come in later after the Africa campaign. Hard to get them back to Aussieland because of PP points AND AP's are hard to come by in the beginning.

quote:

Second they have a lot of stuff available (if you use the PPs to release them) to garrison and defend lots of places long before the Americans start arriving, use them carefully but aggressively.

Ok I'm curious - give an example of who you would pull?? I thought about the 27th out of Johore Baru, but AP's are getting annihilated by LYB air then, Most of the others are small (Lark BN etc.) the others were not experienced enough to make a difference... Now HQ's and ENG are definitely worth their weight to try saving, but most are already in AUS/NZ already???

quote:

Third (I know I just said two thoughts) if the Japanese invade in the north, what are they going to do?  March through the desert to get somewhere that actually matters?  If they invade in the west, so what?  By the time they do it Perth is no longer of any great importance (at least the way I play it).  If they invade in the northeast, well by the time they do it you should already have unloaded one US army division somewhere in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide, say) and they can railroad to the site of the incursion and stop it.  Of course you will have more to deploy than that by then, not just Australian but American.  Have no fear, just bust the other guy's chops.  All will work out in the end.

OK I'll try to take this all at once - I'll use Cap Mandrake & Sprior's AAR for example - ROOKIE OPINION ONLY NO CRITICISM INTENDED!!!!LYB's got into Port Hedland, they built the base up and started expanding, LYB's also got into Darwin & did the same thing, those moves impacted several war plans. Cap n Sprior are grinding up a lot of units in areas NO WHERE near the targets (ie; resources, oil) that Japan took. To me thats where Japan can win the war - if Allies fight over areas that don't produce the goods, then Japan IS winning the war. Only because the Allies are producing SO MUCH in men, materials, and ships by 1944, along with the backbreaker of losing the carriers in 42 keeps Japan from having a chance...Opinions welcomed!

Imagine if after P.H. the KB reformed into two TFs; 2 CV 2 CVE/L's and support ships placed one in the Indian Ocean and the other in SW Pacific... Then sank the shipping coming out of Karachi/Colombo & SF & LA... never mind the off board stuff, now throw in a couple of island airfields in both those areas... Think you would win handliy as Allies? methinks not. [8D][8D][8D] I'm not saying that would be easy, but I succeeded in an A.I. game.

Welcome aboard Encircled!!! Thanks for your participation! Any comments so far? Surely by me (likely first) a boneheaded rookie move is coming...[;)]
Larry is proving a quality opponent for my first PBEM. (= kicking my buttkus in the early going)

I'm also playing TommyG in another PBEM as the Japanese, so I'm using this AAR ( and Larry [:)] ) as a test bed for that PBEM.

Encircled -> RE: Parry and Spar, or is it... Reluctant Admiral 4.2 Fulkerson(J) vs Moore (A) (5/26/2012 11:29:01 PM)

Cheers guys

Against the AI as Allied, and miles away from playing a human yet

Reading as many AAR's as I can to get a better idea about what I'm doing, but I've a long, long way to go yet.

Or you can advertise in the opponents wanted section for an experienced opponent that will answer questions and provide tips etc. I'm playing Jim in this PBEM and have a second PBEM going in which I'm playing a more experienced opponent named Rob who answers questions etc. and I'm learning all kinds of things. Much funner than playing the AI. Just a thought.

Looking for Tracker help, I KNOW I did something, just not sure what it is... I have two seperate setups - one for stock WITPAE in C drive...Then I created Reluctant Admiral folder & installed RA4.2 game vs. Larry. worked fine EXCEPT for the past two days - all of a sudden I'm opening the Tracker file from RA and it wants to open the stock game file.

I changed the path to C:\Reluctant Admiral\ as it was before and changed the saved game to wpae011.pws - which of course says its an error and cannot open...press any key, sigh...

These are the times I feel about as smart as a hard boiled egg... LOL

What are the contents of the properties file in your Tracker folder? Those have a bearing on which file it will try to read.

geofflambert -> RE: Parry and Spar, or is it... Reluctant Admiral 4.2 Fulkerson(J) vs Moore (A) (5/27/2012 12:31:29 AM)

Moo, you're right about nothing coming against handily. I'm referring to Port Moresby, Noumea, Tulagi and Espiritu Santo in particular. I usually try to reinforce Rabaul but vontiger is teaching me that that's impossible against a human who has some idea of what they should be doing. It's a real setback if you lose PM. Tulagi, Espiritu Santo and Noumea are real good places to base Catalinas or Hudsons for searching, so you need to scrounge up some RAAF base forces to send there. Many of them are sitting around in useless places doing nothing, so just RR them to Sydney, say, and when you're ready expend the PPs to release them and ship them out. The Aussie infantry units for the most part are 1/2 strength, but send them anyway to garrison. Those little armoured units are nice to send to and maybe some of those MG bns. The RAAF units will not only service the float planes, but their engineers can help you fortify, which is very important, and they give a small amount of extra support too. At Espiritu Santo and Noumea you can also use AVPs or AVDs to service the float planes, but they won't help you fortify. In Australia I'd just RR everything that isn't necessary where it is to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane (maybe even
Townsville) to be available to put on ships and send somewhere where you need them. Make sure to garrison and begin fortifying Cairns and Townsville especially, though. Now about the Japanese CVs and subs, they will always be having difficulties with fueling and staying in an area (Karachi, or Pago Pago eg.) and it will be some time before he can do anything near Karachi. I don't know what Colombo traffic you refer to but stop it, there's no need for traffic there. Also put the Naval base force there on ships and send it to Karachi. They will have nothing to do at Colombo and if you base any ships there they will be sunk. Also, putting them at Karachi will help greatly with unloading troops, fuel and supplies. Just do it. Now if he splits his CVs up, he is making a mistake and you need to try and capitalize. You have three very good carriers with very good air crews and you will soon have a fourth. A couple of these won't have a full complement of aircraft but there will be carrier capable sqdns available. Fill up your carriers and don't worry about going over the limit by a few planes (up to 15% of capacity). Divide sqdns up if you need to, also put carrier capable sqdns on if there are no carrier trained ones available and put them on 50% training (general) and by the time you might have a battle they will be ready. Again, if he divides his forces, you take your 4 carriers out and go hunting. If he's way down south trying to interdict your supply lines, he will not have any land based support (Bettys and Nells) so just go in and whack him.

One thing more, about your ships trying to escape Singapore and DEI, just send them to Perth and then decide what to do with them. They will not be interfered with going there. Load the TKs and xAKs with fuel though, Australia needs it. On that subject, India needs fuel but the TKs and xAKs you will have in theater can move more than they need from Abadan to Karachi. Send the Dutch TKs to LA or SF, there will be an endless supply of fuel there and the distance to Sydney is not that great. Don't forget Aukland in your considerations, it's a real important base for you.

The file in the red-line box is the properties file. Do me a favor and post a COPY of it with a ".txt" extension to a post so I can look it over .........or easier yet just make a copy of it and put the ".txt" extension on the copy and open the copy with notepad and copy the contents of the copy to a post so we can all look it over.

You and your wife don't have your own computers. No wonder you're having problemos. I have MY computer in my office which I play games on and there's another computer on the dining room table for the kids to play on when they come to visit and I've not had any problems.

Here's the economy chart for the most recent turn. I notice that my NavY and MercY points are both low and I'm producing less of each than I'm using of each. I'll have to bump up the NavY output or turn something NAV off. I'll wait until the MercY points are in the teens and then turn back on some MercY production that I've turned off to fix the MercY problem.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Parry and Spar, or is it... Reluctant Admiral 4.2 Fulkerson(J) vs Moore (A) (5/27/2012 1:30:34 AM)

Here's where I've bumped up my NavY points by 319 or so. The Tracker economy chart said I was producing almost 300 points less than I was using and only had 7 points in the pool so I thought I'd bump up the NavY production by 300+ to take up the slack and maybe gain some points. When I get a comfortable cushion in the pool I'll turn off some of the NavY points.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Parry and Spar, or is it... Reluctant Admiral 4.2 Fulkerson(J) vs Moore (A) (5/27/2012 3:43:13 AM)

I thought that since I bumped up the NavY points by 319 that I ought to bump up the HI output by at least that amount to not only maintain the HI pool but maybe gain some points too. So I bumped up the HI output by 600+

There's enough OilR in repair to take up the slack on the fuel that bigger HI production is going to use so I'll keep an eye on it and adjust as necessary.

This is just the first of several night surface encounters near Hong Kong. I can imagine the losses should be low because there's all these ships miles apart going full speed dodging and weaving launching torps and the Japs are launching star shells and using search lights trying to find them. I'm not sure how long each of these encounters lasts but I'm guessing less than an hour or so.

Although the losses were low on both sides, at least the Japs managed to chase the PT boats back into the Bataan minefield. I gotta lay some mines around that entrance to stop these Allied adventures.

The bombardment of Guam went pretty well seen from the Jap perspective. Now maybe a DA is in order next.
