Gah, Looks like another disc failure. [:(]

Luckily all my game files are on another disc but I will have to reinstall Windows with all the "fun" related to that. Blaaaah! [:@]

I do not know the make and model of the hard drives, but one thing to keep a check on is S.M.A.R.T. My experience has been that hard drives start posting S.M.A.R.T. errors before failing.
Sort of like how we get severe chest pains before the big event.. I have Seagate drives so I monitor my hard drives with Sea Tools for Windows. I have caught an impending drive failure before the drive actually failed.

Crackaces -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/16/2013 1:03:27 PM)

The other alternative is to use a drive failure as an excuse to buy a new computer .. windows would already be installed [8D]

Seagate drives are good but when i was buying my last PC last year i do lot of research and best notes go to Wester Digital HDDs. They are quiet, cold and energy saving. Seagate HDD are much noisier and hot.

If You want speed go to dark line, if You want quiet and cold buy green line(still fast).
For daily use i will suggest compromise with Red line

I am currently using different combination. For Windows and programs i use in daily basis i have Kingston V300 120GB SSD drive. Windows is launching in 6 seconds with that drive, incredible difference compared to HDD. As big storage, to keep all my data i am not using often, i have 2x WD Green 1TB HDD.

I am using WD HDDs from over 10 years and none of them die so far. But i have one Samsung and Seagate deaths

S.M.A.R.T. is must have option. It not only informs You that HDD or SDD have problems it will also to to fix errors on drive. When S.M.A.R.T. will find damaged sector on drive surface he will replace that part of HDD or SDD with reserve sectors and will never use those damaged again. It will not only give HDD longer life but also will protect data on HDD from corruption.

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/16/2013 7:01:19 PM)

At first I thought it was the last remaining Seagate (I had 3 out of 4 die within 2 years) disc that had burned. But it turned out to be my WD Raptor (10.000 RPM) that had died. I´m just glad it wasn´t any of the 2TB discs that crashed...

Going for another WD 2TB green. Already have 2 of those and I´m very happy with how quiet they are. Was going to by the "black" one but as Koniu says even the green version are pretty damned fast too! [:)] I have the same setup as koniu with a SSD drive for Windows. If you havn´t tried it you won´t believe how fast they are. Its worth the extra money. Besides I only have time for AE nowadays anyway and what I have now is pretty overkill for that! [:D]

I was actually thinking about buying a new computer but the Audi failed its inspection and need to see a mechanic. I love Audi but they cost a fortune to fix. Replacing two spindlejoints and 2 breakhoses sets you back 800 Euro. Come on... [8|] Usually I would do it myself but we need the car during Christmas and I won´t have time to fix it myself before that.

I ordered the new disc today and with some luck it will get here tomorrow. No turns until then. I´m up and running on Windows but need the new drive to get everything up and running. Don´t want to install everything on a temporarily disc just for a turn or two and then have to do it again when the new disc arrives.

I read the CR on dropbox and it looks like the strat bombing was a complete failure. Lost a lot of B29Bs to 15 NFs. Probably 10-15 B29s downed. So all in all I lost perhaps 20 B29s for 10-15 HI hits and 5 LI hits. Won´t know the exact numbers before I can see the turn though. Besides that not much happened.

We did well in the Chinese mountains and as predicted Eriks 3 IDs are about to be destroyed.

How long is your experience with the SSD? I'm wondering how well they hold up in the long term.

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/16/2013 7:16:18 PM)

I´ve had mine for over a year now. Probably 18 months. No problems so far. First time I booted I was just gobsmacked. At least here in Sweden they arn´t that expensive now. You can get 120 GB one for 70-80 Euro. Well worth it IMO. [:)]

FeurerKrieg -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/16/2013 7:20:22 PM)

2-3 years on my SSD. I believe (I'm not an expert though) that SSD 'sectors' do wear out, but the nice thing is that if they do, that bit of info is written to a new sector. In effect, SSD's tend not to totally 'die' it is just that the storage capacity diminishes over time as more and more sectors go dark. Now, how seamless that ends up being is function of the controller software written into the SSD, which can vary from brand to brand. Some are better than others I have been told.

I have that SSD 9 months. So far no problems with it. Kingston is giving 3 years guarantee to that model.

First generations of SSDs have problems with high numbers of defects but right now it is not different from HDD drives. I have in job 5 PC working on SSD from over 2 years, 5 days in week 8-16h daily and so far none of them die.

after 9 months S.M.A.R.T. is showing 3 bad sectors but when i write to Kingston about that they tell me that all disk have some damaged sectors even new one. As long as number is steady i will be ok. If it start increasing they will replace my SSD. I read somwher that SSD usually have ~500000 reserve sectors so 3 is not bad.

I've never heard of any of the stuff you guys are talking about. I will have to look into this stuff.

Just one thought on SSD's .. I own a Sony Vaio F series laptop .. the Southbridge Chipset sucks and is the limiting factor for accessing peripheral devices. So the extra investment might now be worth it ... instead it is time for a new laptop! [8D]

No disc arrived today despite me forking up extra for overnight shipping. [:@] My order is still listed as "pending". Going to try and cancel it tomorrow and buy a disc over the counter tomorrow.

Nice, but 65cm high is to big for me mine have only 50cm.
Most people neglect how important computer case is. Good case can significantly reduce noise an temperature of entire system.

I will blame Christmas. I suspect all Internet shops have lot of work right now.

EHansen -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/17/2013 4:39:10 PM)

I agree that a good case is important. I have a Cool Master HAF X. I can't post links yet, need more posts.

FeurerKrieg -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/17/2013 5:25:06 PM)

Yup - I have this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

Did a 'silent PC build' so I have this giant heatsink, with a fan that moves super slow. This case is almost all mesh, so it stays very cool. Power supply is super efficient, so the fan for that never comes on. It has made a huge difference in my gaming. I can have the sound down low and still hear everything fine since the PC isn't putting out any noise.

Here's a site that I used to get ideas from. That have some builds from a couple years back that are still good IMO.

GAK!  A full page of techno-computeron speak.  Is this a hijack...where's Snowden?  Come on, guys, not the place for it.

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/18/2013 6:30:56 AM)

princep, don´t be sad. The AAR will soon again be filled with cries of terror from the Japanese pixels in full flight before the mighty hordes of the allied pixels! [:D]

Besides its an interesting discussion. (And it keeps my post count up! [:D]) Hope I can get going again today. A shop just a 30 minute drive have the disc in stock. I´m just trying to cancel my other order before heading out there!

I´m off for a followup car inspection now. 800 Euro poorer....it better pass this time!

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/18/2013 11:11:14 AM)

Finally got my drive shipped. It will arrive tomorrow with a 50% discount + free shipping. [:)] That is what I call consumer care! [&o]

Not sure that we can manage any turns before Christmas though. Both Erik and I are leaving on Friday.

EDIT: I asked Erik if we could start the "AE Holiday" right away. Getting the drive tomorrow I still have to install everything AND do the turn. I also have to pack for a 1 week trip tomorrow evening. Quite a bit more complicated when you have 14 month baby...

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/18/2013 4:20:41 PM)

Christmas break
______________________________________________________________________________

So, we are now on Christmas break! I´ll leave town on Friday and be gone for about a week. Can you guys for once keep me off the 2nd page? [:D]

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Okinawa! (12/19/2013 4:18:35 PM)

Thanks Speedy! You too! And all the rest of you too. [:)]

Looks like Christmas is saved for me. [:D] Currently playing Final Fantasy I and Chronos Trigger on my phone. Its crazy. I can remember playing those on the Megadrive and Nintendo. I must have been in my early teens.

PS. The drive didn´t arrive today. Go figure...
